    Red Sox draft D'Angelo Ortiz

Thanks for that -- that must have been what I was thinking of. He barely played that year. EDIT: Wow, and Stenhouse PH for Marty Barrett of all people, too. Can't imagine Barrett got PH for that often that season. He had so many huge hits, all seemingly late in the game.

    Red Sox draft D'Angelo Ortiz

I would have bet anything that it was Mike Stenhouse who got a walk-off HBP in that game, but alas it was Sullivan. I feel like Stenhouse had a big game-ending AB sometime that season, though . . .

    July 14 - Royals @ Red Sox

In 1986, the Sox beat the Angels 3-2 at Fenway the last game before the All-Star game. Clemens pitched and Buckner hit a two-run homer. I was 16 and I was there -- remember it like yesterday (or the day before, maybe).

Yaz was in such environment in the mid-to-late 1970s, but maybe he was a little too long-in-the-tooth by then.

This got me into looking at Yaz's career stats and I was surprised to see that he never had 200 hits in a season. (I know he walked a lot.)
