    2019 US Open- Pebble Beach

A couple of snippets from the US Open column I finished writing today for The American magazine: Those stats in the first excerpt are pretty mental, aren't they?

    2019 Golf Thread

Sadly, my Ladies Cup matchplay adventure at Gullane is over after only one round. In retrospect, a 9:12 a.m. tee time the morning after the US Open ended at nearly 3 a.m. wasn't my greatest ever idea; neither was failing to fully charge my trolley battery the night before playing a course as...

    Kevin Durant Offseason Thread

One of the worst franchises in the league? I don't think that's being fair to the current regime and the young talent already in place - if Durant were to come to Atlanta, he'd almost certainly be a factor.

    Kevin Durant Offseason Thread

I wonder if the Hawks might be in play for Durant - they've got cap space to ride through a year without him, he would help attract other FAs in due course to a city not normally in contention for them, veteran leadership for the young core of Trae/Collins/Huerter, Schlenk was with Golden State...

    Tennis 2019: Plus ça change...

From where I'm standing, this argument seems to be in Nadal's favor, not against him. Clay is probably the most under-represented surface as far as slams are concerned, assuming you ignore "indoor" as its own surface: looking at the 2020 ATP Tour calendar, for example, there are 8 weeks in which...

    2019 US Open- Pebble Beach

I very much don't, but I normally get it pretty good - so much PGA Tour golf is in UK prime time - so I can't really complain.

Stand Up If You Love the Darts

Yeah, it's hard for me to get quite as interested in the darts now that Waddell is no longer with us. "When Alexander of Macedonia was 33, he cried salt tears because there were no more worlds to conquer; [Eric] Bristow's only 27!"

That was a car crash by the end, but wow - well done, Thiem. (Can he win a set from Rafa tomorrow? I doubt it...)

And now the rain is back! Has Djokovic been given a reprieve? (He just saved break point serving at 1-4; it'll be Deuce when they return, which may not be soon as the covers are on and the rain looks fairly heavy.)

    Tennis 2019: Plus ça change...

Thiem 4-1 up (one break of serve) in the 5th. I expected Thiem to be nervy today, and while he has been at times - notably double-faulting at set point in the 4th - I hadn't anticipated how tightly wound Djokovic would be. Maybe the burden of history is finally weighing on him?

    Tennis 2019: Plus ça change...

Djokovic is so peevish right now - I thought his behavior in leaving the court so quickly yesterday (twice) was pretty disgraceful, and he's trying to intimidate the umpire again today. Really rooting for Thiem, who did well to win the 3rd set after conceding the early break I expected would come.

A SoSH work-related meeting in Tokyo would be very cool. Keep me posted!

    Tennis 2019: Plus ça change...

Looking at the odds this morning, I see Thiem is 4/6 to win today's match and Djokovic is 11/10. I'm not a betting man, but if I were I'd absolutely be wagering big on Djokovic at those odds, even starting down a break in the third set.

Stand Up If You Love the Darts

The number of nine-dart finishes I've watched on YouTube over the years embarrasses me, frankly.

Rafa's array of cross-court shots today is just mind-blowingly good.

I'm actually loving the conditions out there right now. It's really to see two of the all-time greats try, and mostly succeed, in puzzle-solving the sorts of winds I play in all the time.

    Tennis 2019: Plus ça change...

Meanwhile, I was watching Jo Konta absolutely choke away a match she should have won against Vondrousova. At 5-3, 40-15 in the first set, she had an easy drive volley she hammered out by several feet, and she was in control of the second set point at 40-30 before netting an easy slice backhand...

Are you really complaining about the Djoker's shirt when there are so many more egregious examples of bad fashion on display?

    Diary of a commentator

Whew...just heard back from the OBS, and they said baseball and softball would be the key sports for me, with soccer as a backup. So that's very much in line with what I would have hoped for and expected. (Still hoping that I might wind up in a stadium or two, rather than just in a studio, but...
