So....who is the new GM/head of baseball ops?

Was Groome a bad pick? I looked at the career WAR of guys picked 16th in the draft, stopping at 2014 in order to not include guys who may still be developing. That's 50 guys. 14 never reached the majors 14 had a career WAR less then 1 8 had a career WAR from 1-10 10 had a career WAR 10-20...

    2024 Core

Looks like Josh Donaldson has been fairly unlucky this year. Could do a lot worse than the 2022 version as a backup 1B/3B. Evan Longoria?

    2024 Core

I expect there will be someone else on the roster with experience at 1B and 3B. FWIW, supposedly Dalbec was told “you are auditioning for the other 29 teams“ after the trade deadline. And he appreciated the candor.

    2024 Core

I guess the trade return at that point was so low that he was more valuable as a AAA depth piece in case of injury? But yes, at this point he's not worth a 40 man spot, it's time to move on.

    2024 Core

Dalbec was the starting 1B to open the season last year. You can argue the wisdom of that, but at that point he had 33 career HR and an OPS+ of 114 in 545 career PA. And he filled a spot for virtually no money on a team with many other holes to fill and limited budget space. And then he...

    2024 Core

List of players I would be surprised to not see back next year: Bello Casas Devers Refsnyder (because he's useful enough to make the roster nut not so much to be in a trade). That's really it. Even Story, I could see them eating a chunk of his deal while it's still possible to imagine him...

X Leaves the Spot for San Diego: 11 years, $280M

Got it. I could have been more clear.

    Kyle Schwarber goes to WAR

Would the flip side of this be that when he doesn't hit a HR, the Phillies are more likely to lose? Because Olson, Devers, etc. are more likely contribute without hitting a HR?

X Leaves the Spot for San Diego: 11 years, $280M

Just be clear, my scenario means the Red Sox assume all of Xander's deal, the Padres assume all of Story's. And not a world where they both have the same money. You may have read it that way, I'm not sure, so I wanted to clarify.

X Leaves the Spot for San Diego: 11 years, $280M

Would you trade Story for Xander, straight up, no financial considerations? So the Sox pay Xander's deal, the Padres pay Story's.

The Red Sox have fired Chaim Bloom

Maybe not, but it terms of process, it's just as much a failure to not at least put it in Sale's hands.

    Kyle Schwarber goes to WAR

To be fair, they didn't anticipate Harper needing to DH. Though signing a guy with the intent being a full time DH does remove flexibility when it comes to things like this.

    Kyle Schwarber goes to WAR

I'm guilty of using WAR as a catch all description of a player's value. But we all kind of take for granted that it accurately weighs offense and defense into one measure. Does it? The fact that bWAR and fWAR can be very different based on defense is a red flag for me. My WAG is that oWAR...

    Fan dies at Gillette Stadium

So if the fight caused the guy to have a heart attack, what's the liability for the other guy?
  15. moondog80

The Red Sox have fired Chaim Bloom

Because they were trying to win but not all the way in. A reasonable approach for a team with about a 1/3 chance at the postseason. We will do what we can to win this year because there is a decent chance, but that chance isn't so good that it's worth selling of the future. Bloom made...

The Red Sox have fired Chaim Bloom

They were also trying to win. Trading Vazquez didn't make the team worse (because they picked up McGuire). Trading those guys would have. There was a price where they would have moved them, but rentals were not getting much in return, as evidenced by Carlos Rodon and Willson Contreras not...

The Red Sox have fired Chaim Bloom

Yeah, you make that deal. But he's literally in the 1st %ile in walk rate. That’s not the 1% you should aspire to. There's an excellent chance we'd all hate him in a year and blame that trade for torpedoing the playoff run. And of course, this is assuming it was a straight up deal.

So....who is the new GM/head of baseball ops?

I wouldn't put too much stock in this -- looks like it's just Rosenthal guessing.

The Red Sox have fired Chaim Bloom

Players are given a wide degree of latitude when it comes to things like major surgery.

So....who is the new GM/head of baseball ops?

Yes, because the fruits of their futility have started to bloom, and their futility lasted so long that they still have plenty of prospects in the pipeline. They had the first pick in the draft (who is now one of the top prospects in all of MLB) as recently as last year. If they have a 5 or 6...
