    Red Sox sign Kenley Jansen

Gagne was putrid in half a season for us. He was an excellent reliever for the Dodgers for many years, multiple time All-Star, won a Cy Young award. He was the Dodgers all-time saves leader before Kenley surpassed him in 2016, and called him up to congratulate him when that milestone happened...

    What does 2023 look like?

Red Sox on May 4th with more 2023 wins against the Blue Jays than in all of 2022. That really sucked, really nice to turn it around. Obviously catching this team on a hot streak, but currently the 4th best team in the AL. Exciting to have so many players exceeding expectations; as soon as a...

    The new running game

Was wondering about the catcher's interference thing, too. I recall three on Saturday, one on the Sox (Wong) and two on the Angels catcher Thaiss, and figured that was just a fluky day until last night Vaz did it too. Were there more? It would make sense if the catchers are all reaching forward...

Padres sign Manny Machado to a 11-year, $350 million extension

I mean, I feel like you could argue this either way. The finite resources "there's got to be a limit somewhere" camp would suggest it would make it less likely, since they've committed so much money already. But since they're continuing to show us they don't fear huge long term contracts in any...

Padres sign Manny Machado to a 11-year, $350 million extension

Padres having more than $90 million committed to three players in 2033, kind of remarkable.

    Which Batter is More Productive?

Intentional walking the batter with the bases loaded has happened, to my knowledge, three times since WWII: Barry Bonds in 1998, David Josh Hamilton in 2008, and Corey Seager in 2022. Some interesting facts: * All three times, the team issuing the intentional walk won the game. * In the 2022...

Red Sox acquire SS/3B Adalberto Mondesi for Josh Taylor

This is my new favorite life quote. Nice to imagine that his speed and exit velocity could be turned into something better by a different team than the Royals. Who knows? If he can stay healthy. Still, he's intriguing, and in January that's all I can ask for.

Red Sox extend Devers—11 years, $332 million

I think it's a little closer than that. There are nonstop flights from Logan to Tokyo that are just under 14 hours, while nonstop flights from LAX to Tokyo are just under 12 hours.

Red Sox extend Devers—11 years, $332 million

Speier saying no opt outs. So we won't have a repeat of the X situation in three years. 11 years through 2033 is even better.

Red Sox extend Devers—11 years, $332 million

Well! Seems like the front office re-evaluated what future markets were going to be like, given this off-season, and acted accordingly. It just took a couple months for the computers to finish calculating. ;) Haven't been a fan of such long deals, but with Raffy at least he'll be in his late...

Filling the Lyric Little Bandbox, 2023

For what it's worth, the Red Sox weren't alone in having low attendance in 2022. MLB-wide, this past season was worse than any year from 1998-2019, with an average of 26,566 fans per game. Presumably a little of that is due to interest still rebounding post-Covid, but actually overall MLB...

Devers : No talks after season begins (Speier report)

I love Raffy, but I don't agree with the calls for sign him for ultramega contracts. He is an all-star level player, but (so far, at least) not an MVP level player. He is not Judge; as someone pointed out in another thread, covid year aside, Judge's WAR floor is Raffy's ceiling so far. Maybe he...

X Leaves the Spot for San Diego: 11 years, $280M

I think there is this perception that we are unique in losing star players to free agency, but we're really not. Astros lost Springer and Correa, Dodgers just lost Turner (I know not home-grown). While the Yankees did just resign Judge, this is reminding me a bit of the Yankees losing Robinson...

X Leaves the Spot for San Diego: 11 years, $280M

All right gang, here's my hot take before bed. I don't think the Sox screwed this up at any stage. They got Xander's pre-arb years, and they signed him to a nice extension and got three more years with him. Then he opted out and got bonkers money for his thirties. It's not clear any extension a...

X Leaves the Spot for San Diego: 11 years, $280M

I would guess they were bidding in money against Bogaerts preferring to stay in Boston, and the way they preferred to give him that money was in extra years rather than higher AAV.

X Leaves the Spot for San Diego: 11 years, $280M

Certainly can't fault Xander for taking it; I was just pushing back on the idea that it wasn't his choice to do so. Maybe just a semantic point on my end! It's always a choice. Concerning the years, having the same money spread over 11 years seems more a favor to San Diego than to him. If he...

X Leaves the Spot for San Diego: 11 years, $280M

I get where you're going. There is a very good chance the ten years Xander gave us will be way, way superior to the eleven years he will (in theory) give San Diego. Of course you never know, he could be a freak and be better in his thirties than his twenties. But in all probability, we got most...

X Leaves the Spot for San Diego: 11 years, $280M

Just something about the "he had no choice" phrasing struck me. If he wants max dollars, clearly that is the choice to make. But saying he had no choice sounds like deflecting away from the fact that he did have a choice, and the richest contract is what he chose.

X Leaves the Spot for San Diego: 11 years, $280M

Interesting formulation about Xander feeling like he had "no choice" but to take the much more lucrative offer. I mean, of course he had a choice.
