Tech Bargain Thread: Post Your Deals Here!

I would think very carefully about your use case and data-loss tolerance before buying a refurb spinning-platter HDD. Sure, it has a warranty, but that's cold comfort if it dies. (Using it as a backup drive in some cases would seem OK to me, for example. Or as a sneaker-net type of transfer...

I love the smell of burning oil in the morning - The Formula 1 2022 season

Agreed. I sort of crapped on Zhou in my predictions (to be fair, lots of new-ish drivers make these kind of mistakes in inverted grids) but I was really impressed with his composure.

I love the smell of burning oil in the morning - The Formula 1 2022 season

I think it's 50/50 (maybe 60/40) if there will be a turn 1 incident tomorrow - I can imagine Zhou getting caught up in something, and I can also imagine Sainz/Lewis being overly aggressive trying to out-drag Alonso hard, because of what you say. (Also George and Danny Ric trying to clear...

Looking for a small (21-24”) television

    If your monitor doesn't have built-in speakers (many don't) you'll need some way to get sound. Samsung definitely makes a 24" monitor/TV-with-speakers - https://www.samsung.com/us/computing/monitors/smart-monitors/24--m5-fhd-smart-monitor-ls24am506nnxza/ - though I don't think that's a...

    Jam Kazam (media) PC

I would guess that the Starlink latency is going to be a problem, but it will be interesting to see what your results are. You might just be under the threshold where it comes out ok. (Speed and latency are very different things, if that wasn't apparent already.)

    Jam Kazam (media) PC

There's a set of (free) tools called JackTrip that do a similar thing - I talked to someone about these just at the beginning of pandemic but haven't used them myself: https://www.jacktrip.org/ They also have a no-PC hardware widget for ~$250 that can connect to people using the software, if...

I love the smell of burning oil in the morning - The Formula 1 2022 season

Ham at least, just savvy. Trying to get a tow (and failing), but didn't exceed the min delta and safely offline on a straight, so no rule broken. Alonso, literally a no-op (nothing from the stewards, from what I can tell). Crafty old vet, I think. Perez should have the straight-line speed to...

    IdeaPad 710S Plus DC Jack

I didn't even think about that, but on further consideration the processor being soldered down isn't really a surprise either. DIMMs soldered down is definitely not unusual. I believe you said you bought a VAIO replacement but in theory you could have bought a replacement similar model and...

    Brady is back….back again

The de-facebook'd and de-AMP'd link is: https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2022/04/04/tom-bradys-time-with-the-family (it's funny as hell)

Can't resize tiny application window - help!

You've tickled some deep memory in my brain now, my parents have a Canon multifunction scanner/printer and the scanner part also got corrupted at one point (though not exactly like this - same thing though where the printer part worked and not the scanner). I think (? - this is a long time ago)...

Can't resize tiny application window - help!

It's possible that there is a registry setting that controls window size that was corrupted (and is not getting cleared by reinstalling the app). The registry entries are app-specific so I can't speculate what they would be called (since I don't have the Canon software). But, here's an example...

    IdeaPad 710S Plus DC Jack

The graphics are integrated into the processor, there's no separate component. The processor is probably $50-75 at most. A complete laptop with that processor is around $200 on ebay. The memory might be soldered to the mainboard, or it might be a DIMM. If it's a DIMM probably $20ish. If...

I love the smell of burning oil in the morning - The Formula 1 2022 season

I'm pretty sure I wrote something about this in last year's F1 thread, or maybe even the year before (!) - the best races are when quali/race have opposite weather. Best always is dry quali / wet race, but wet quali / dry race also tends to be interesting, in both cases the setups are...

Mach Wilson Sr is a pretty awesome name, though. Should be a character in Top Gun.

    College Name-Image-Likeness (NIL)

From https://giving.stanford.edu/endowment/ (because Nip's post made me curious so I was looking at some other stats on it): I think this is different than one-time/annual-pledge-drive donations - the letters you get for those are typically for the "general fund" / have no restrictions.

I love the smell of burning oil in the morning - The Formula 1 2022 season

It seemed like cheap/low-rent helicopter footage to me, that we get almost everywhere. I wonder if they can run it more / under different conditions than the helicopter cams and that's why they are trying it. I'm sure that it's a lot, lot cheaper. I expected a total snoozefest at Barcelona...

    Fire Tablet compatibility

I was going to suggest you sideload it or use the Google Play store but it looks like that might not give working video. You can still try it and see if it works: https://www.reddit.com/r/kindlefire/comments/ty7ao8/mlb_app_no_longer_available_on_amazon_fire_tablets/

    2022 NFL Draft Game Thread-Day 1

The article suggests that teams have their own proprietary charts because of these issues, but also that when trying to value trades the JJ chart is the "fallback" standard because everyone's internal chart is different and sometimes not well aligned when trying to do a deal.

    2022 NFL Draft Game Thread-Day 1

Some other news about the Jimmy Johnson chart: https://sports.yahoo.com/the-chart-that-guides-nfl-draft-trades-has-a-glaring-flaw-it-isnt-very-good-134240503.html It overvalues the top-half of the first round, and undervalues the late rounds.
