New Euro Super league to be announced Sunday

This case might provide some precedent; https://www.reuters.com/article/eu-isu-skating-antitrust-idUSL1N2IW0XE The difference being that one sport is watched by billions of people, and the other by about three...the event in this case never took place, and the promoters had little more than...

MLB moving ASG out of Atlanta

My understanding (from a few years ago, so maybe I misremember pieces, or something has changed [which it may well have with Covid-19 adjustments to the deal between players and teams]) is that the players own the gate for the playoffs in lieu of receiving salary - to the point where team execs...

    Mets Behaving Badly

Minus Callaway and Porter, we’d probably never have heard of DeVito and Newman...which to me means almost every team probably has a few DeVitos and Newmans - creepy, bothersome and inappropriate, but not high profile or over-the-line enough on their own to merit media attention (yet). If I were...

4/12- 2:10 PM ET @ MIN: Game To be Played

It was not a today only comment...the people responsible for today’s postponement need somewhat more serious consequence than a sternly worded memo.

4/12- 2:10 PM ET @ MIN: Game To be Played

Whatever genius decided to build a new ballpark in Minnesota during the 21st century without some sort of roof needs to receive a sternly worded memo.

MLB moving ASG out of Atlanta

When you say “Braves Owner”, who are you actually talking about, because as best I can tell they’re owned by Liberty Media...?

MLB moving ASG out of Atlanta

I doubt the Braves are all that devastated...this isn’t exactly the best year to be hosting! They’ll be more than happy to let the politics play themselves out and take it another year when things are less Covidy.

Beer Leagues, Gear, and other Non-Pro Related Items

Dr. G.J. van Ingen Shenau of the Free University Amsterdam did research in the 80s...and this was one of his conclusions. He’s the guy who did the research that led to the development of the klap-skate that changed long track speed skating...so he’s pretty credible.

Beer Leagues, Gear, and other Non-Pro Related Items

The actual makeup of blade material is way over-rated. Friction between ice and blade makes up a tiny component of actual resistance when you skate compared to air. Wearing a tighter jersey and pants, and staying away from those big bulky old-school socks will help more than paying boatload for...

The Sports Discovery thread - what craziness did you come across?

I stand by the premise. Even if females were “allowed” to play hockey, the general desire line was still that they still shouldn’t - hence the invention of ringette. The sport was born of a now archaic societal perception, if not a specific and direct exclusion.

The Sports Discovery thread - what craziness did you come across?

I don’t understand why people don’t find the existence of ringette to be fundamentally offensive. It was basically invented as a watered-down version of ice hockey, for the ladies, because OBVIOUSLY they can’t play hockey! Same for softball, it was literally invented as a “softer” version of...

    Preparations for the Summer Olympics

New MILB team info now available

Exactly. So instead of mid-size towns across America having low pay pro baseball to watch, they’ll see the same players either paying to play or playing for free. Same stadiums, hot dogs and mascots, though...

    Preparations for the Summer Olympics

Shame, too, because those who run less well known sports would better serve their sport by using the Olympic Games as a showcase to how to grow and spread their sport through moderate and reasonable facilities that are used as community assets around the world, every year. If they did that...

    Preparations for the Summer Olympics

So basically like how every sport has a World Championship every year, but re-branded and scheduled within a two-week period?

    Preparations for the Summer Olympics

IOC would never move basketball into any part of the calendar that conflicts with NBA ply. I think we need to recognize that for the most part now, every Olympic venue is really just a TV studio, and can be scaled to accommodate that, while also functioning as an actually sustainable facility...

    Preparations for the Summer Olympics

Maybe this would be a good opportunity for the IOC to experiment with scaling down the Games, to the point where they’re a functional set of sports events instead of the grotesquely enormous and completely unsustainable thing they’ve grown to be. Simpler venues, smaller crowds, less on-site...

Sox Officially Sever Ties With Lowell Spinners (With a Caveat)

Independent professional baseball just doesn’t make economic sense. Why pay guys to be independent pros when college kids are willing to pay to wear the same uniforms in the same stadiums and fans in those towns are willing to pay to watch them, and pay to eat the same hot dogs and drink the...

Congress proposes sweeping changes to college athletics

I have had this conversation with people in the Olympic sport world. In general they supported the concept - until two words changed their minds; “Betsy” and “DeVos” In all seriousness, the concept puts everything at the whim of the politics of the day - and subject to the acts of the...
