  1. Conigliaro's Potential

    Gameweek 32

For the record, the law is that the attacking player's hands and arms don't count for being offside, because you can't legally play the ball with them.

    Gameweek 32

The worst thing is that I've seen absolutely no signs that anyone responsible for VAR is in any way worried about its implementation or suggesting any possible reforms about how it might be better used. There's no other sport in which video review is so badly misused, is there? (Baseball might...

    Gameweek 32

VAR denies Arsenal a goal by a toenail being offside. I'd like to see VAR adopt a margin of error, like the "Umpire's Call" decision in cricket video reviews: if the play is called onside on the field, you have to be at least a foot (or more) offside for a goal to be overruled.

NFL Moving to 17 Game Shedule in 2021

Spoken like a true 21st Century Patriots fan. (Do you know how many fans would kill for their team to be 9-7, or 10-7, or even 9-8?)

    NBA 20/21 season thread

Why is there a 20/21 "season thread" and a 20/21 "game thread"? Shouldn't this be for not-game news and the game thread be for in-game stuff?

    Diary of a commentator

It's insane just how fast today was for me. I thought I had two exciting matches in store; instead, Kovinic upset Rogers 7-5 6-1 in less than an hour and a quarter, and then Jabeur defeated Hibino 6-0 6-1 in 44 minutes. I was out of the studio by 8:30, and back home before midnight; easily my...

    Pats QB Options

I agree that Wilson has high bust potential - higher than Lawrence, especially if he goes to the Jets at #2 as everyone expects and has to learn how to be a QB in the New York media market. But I'm sure Vegas would price that bust potential into their odds (in the hypothetical world in which...
  8. Conigliaro's Potential

    Pats QB Options

If it were possible to wager on which of the top QB prospects this year will be seen in 10 years' time as a bust, I might just pick Lawrence. That's partly because I'd almost certainly get the best odds on him, but it's mostly because he's almost certainly going to be coached by Urban Meyer for...

    Diary of a commentator

So, attached below are the notes I've just finished preparing for today. I used to be (and still occasionally am) a PowerPoint presentation designer for financial services companies, and so I use PowerPoint to compile most of my research, although I also use Excel to prepare the spreadsheets...

    Diary of a commentator

For the first time, I've been given two tennis assignments in the same day in which I've commentated on every player before: Shelby Rogers vs. Danka Kovinic, and Ons Jabeur vs. Nao Hibino. Definitely the two matches I wanted to get, and Rogers vs. Kovinic in particular should be good, with...

    Diary of a commentator

https://www.tennisforum.com/threads/live-commentary-thread-vol-147.1380321/post-82575131 Is that one of you jokers? :) I had two really quite interesting matches tonight. McHale played an awesome first set and won it 6-2, then served twice for the match in the second set at 5-4 and 6-5 (having...
  12. Conigliaro's Potential

    Diary of a commentator

FWIW, I'm back in Leeds and on the air again in an hour. It's the second day of Round 2 matches at the MUSC Health Women's Open in Charleston, and I've got two matches: first it's the American Christina McHale (#91 in the world) against last week's winner in Bogota, the Colombian teenager Maria...
  13. Conigliaro's Potential

    Pats QB Options

But maybe they are? :) (Dak Prescott was a fourth-round pick in 2016, of course; presumably nobody at the time thought he was worth a flyer in Rounds 2 or 3...)

Before the Draft: Tales told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

Do you think this is true of Belichick with players at all positions? It's not like his drafting record is flawless; how many of those drafting mistakes might be down to the post-draft coaching, rather than the pre-draft scouting? (Or do we just take it for granted that the answer is "zero"?)
  15. Conigliaro's Potential

Before the Draft: Tales told by idiots, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing

Can I get a bit meta about the Pre-Draft Industrial Complex (henceforth "PDIC")? Every spring, I get more and more bemused by the amount of ink that is spilled - digitally or otherwise - on the process of allocating rookies to new NFL teams, a process which is almost certainly much, much more...

    2020-2021 NBA Game Thread

But Reddish hasn't played a game for Nate, and Hunter only came back for two (ineffective) games before being sidelined again. Gallo and Bogdanovic have been big recently, but overall I'd say Nate has had worse cards to play with if only because Hunter was on fire at the start of the season and...

    2020-2021 NBA Game Thread

I don't think you can give Coach of the Year to someone who has coached as few games as McMillan has. On the other hand, looking at what Pierce got out of a healthier roster and what McMillan has gotten out of the guys he's had available...the contrast is pretty compelling. No Trae, Collins...

Bill Simmons: Valuing Trades More Than Friendships

I wonder if Simmons is worried about losing right-leaning listeners and is repeatedly dropping "cancel culture" references into his podcasts as a corrective to his usual reality-based take on Trump and GOP craziness.
