    Welcome to Football Island

Missed this last week: the CFL, if they play, will do it in a hub city https://www.cfl.ca/2020/07/21/winnipeg-tentatively-chosen-hub-city-2020-season/

    2020 Pats: General/Non-QB Off-Season Discussion

I've heard this sentiment a few times. I'm procrastinating at 7am (good sign that I'll be productive today). I went through all of the rosters since 2001. Here are the age 30+ new arrivals who were starters for at least 16 games (and other notable players, denoted with a star) Corey Dillon: 30...

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Buys XFL for $15 Million

If I did my math right, if they can triple that (bc of newer HD/4K footage?), the present value of 300k/year with a 2% rate of return is: 15 million

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson Buys XFL for $15 Million

I wonder how much the rights to the existing footage are worth, for shows that need to show "pro football" but can't show the NFL?

    2020 Pats: Who's Out? NE Opt-Outs

I wonder how many of the opt-out people will retire next year, and how many will come back as better players because they had more recovery time. If Lee felt like he was still recovering from his injuries, I could see how that would be the tipping point to opting out.

    Deadspin defectors debut

Moving even further afield, It's worth noting that the trend in academia is in the opposite direction: towards much more open and ungated access. I wonder what the effect would be of a silo-ed popular media and an open academic world.

I can't decide whether charging an extra $30/year for commenting privileges is genius or haughty.

    2020 Pats: Who's Out? NE Opt-Outs

This is from overthecap.com (via Miguel's twitter feed), and is a really helpful explainer. Might have to pin this to the forum for a couple of weeks. It's all laid out there, including this nugget, that I didn't realize:

    2020 Pats: Who's Out? NE Opt-Outs

Well, he often says that the QB at Foxboro High can make a lot of the same throws that Brady does...

Scab Pats go at least 4-5. Belichick: can't stop won't stop.

    Deadspin defectors debut

They're starting their own media company. Congrats to them for getting their kickoff into the New York Times. https://nyti.ms/39AMfBu Sounds great! But their price point is $8/month (not including annual discount). Not sure I'd pay more for snark than I do, currently, for the Times and the...

    Welcome to Football Island

I think you are underestimating the lengths an organization will go to for 8 billion dollars. Replacement refs? Drone cameras? Remote coaching? I don't know if they will bubble, but I'm certain they are talking about it today.

    Welcome to Football Island

I thought that some were full-time, but they stopped that in 2019 (bad timing!). Penny wise, pound foolish

2019-20 Championship- Now with 100% less Pig.

Looks like the game today is on ESPN+. I can't believe it would do worse ratings than SportsCenter on ESPN2.

    Welcome to Football Island

I'm excluding current hotspots, although the NBA/MLS/NWSL are showing that's not necessarily a constraint. Certainly there are many places in TX (all those high school stadia!) that would work. Hawaii only has 2 stadia, on 2 different islands. Edit: Mooch has the best idea I've seen so far...

    Welcome to Football Island

Edit: credit to the original idea by The Grey Eagle Now that the Marlins are in trouble, I do think the NFL is working on (or already has ready-to-go) a Football Island solution. So let's carelessly speculate! A football bubble would need to hold approximately 2,500 players 1,500 team staff...

"We're going to Disney World!" NBA to resume season July 31 at WDW

Let's grant your hypothetical that he performed no family duties. I don't think it's a good precedent to set that players that leave the bubble must be restricted to certain activities. Not only is that likely not part of the CBA, it would also compromise contact tracing if a player does test...
