2020 youth sports what are leagues doing

My Son's AAU coach (Mass) said Zero Gravity was doing the 4v4 thing, but he thinks they have a tournament in CT this weekend with 5V5. 4V4 seems totally arbitrary. They told us it was 10 on a court at a time - 8 players, 2 refs. They put the rims back up on the outdoor courts around here...

2020 youth sports what are leagues doing

First little league games in our town last night! Umps behind the pitcher's mound. Players spread out in the area behind the backstop with parents on either side of the field up the basepaths. I actually love that they put parents farther away from the players, I hate it when parents coach in games.

2020 youth sports what are leagues doing

I could see this being a MAJOR challenge for all youth sports and even HS sports - so many officials are 50+ and it's extra cash for most of them not something they need to survive (at least in this area).

Peak mid-April. We'll be back to "normal" by July. Normal might be different than it was before this started, but we'll have football this fall. https://covid19.healthdata.org/projections

Totally agree. Spending some time on the other side is very valuable. I had a friend who coached in a small Little Leauge where every coach had to umpire a lower level game. I thought that was great.

We are very lucky that was definitely the case with our previous assigned who retired a few years ago. Tons of guy who were less than fully engaged to put it kindly. Our new assigner was my coach for a year in college where he also played (a long time ago). He knows a lot of officials. We get a...

2020 youth sports what are leagues doing

Our travel basketball leagues canceled as soon as CIAC (CT state High Schools) canceled, which was just before the NCAAs canceled. AAU is suspending everything for at least the next 3 weeks. The first two live periods for EYBL are canceled. This is a huge deal if you are a HS kid who wants...

"For the record, having coached hockey there are a number of refs where you just wonder why they are even involved. They have seemingly no regard for player safety and refuse to accept changes to the game designed to make it safer" BINGO! And when you get a coach who doesn't know or care...

We pay $45/game for basketball and require officials to be board certified, they get there 5 minutes early, games last a little over and hours, you can do at least two. So $90 for about two and a half hours work. It's not the money, it's finding people who take pride in what they do. I've been...

That's crazy. 9&10 years olds. What was he getting paid? $25? The league should name an adult game coordinator who is reponsible for keeping parents in line. I thought that was a Little League rule, since I've filled that role a few times, maybe it's just our local LL?

Not to excuse this sort of behavior at all, I agree on jail time, but I also agree that the lack of accountability of youth sports officials is a problem. Sometimes, the coaches are a problem, sometimes the parents are a problem but there are also times when the officials are the problem...

    Coaching Attention Challenged Kids

We had our last game of the season yesterday. I don't think I ever got him to retain any team concepts. I think he has more challenges than attention issues. Individually his skills improved to some extent, he's able to play 1v1 with good focus and his parents said he had fun and is shooting out...

    Missing Games for Religious Reasons

"I have been accommodating both kids " Good for you, especially for working with a big athletic kid based on potential rather than present outcomes, it shocks me how many youth coaches don't understand the importance of doing that. In some ways it might be easier to have 2 less for games if you...

Tough one. If you're going to do it for your #1 player not for another...... In CT, there are tons of HS games on Friday nights.

Licking the pitcher's mound! That is funny! I appreciate the input. Trying to keep things simple and celebrate any success. I bring the kid to and from practice a lot (he lives nearby) and it's cool to hear him say things like "I'm glad we play this team again, I was terrible the first time we...

    Vox/SB Nation Shake-up

Ooopsss - Vox loved AB5 when it passed From 9/11 of this year: "Gig workers’ win in California is a victory for workers everywhere" "AB 5’s passage — which Gov. Gavin Newsom is expected to sign — could easily be seen as just another progressive victory in California. But it is more than that...

    Coaching Attention Challenged Kids

Thanks OfTheCarmen! Patience is going to be the biggest thing for me. I normally think of myself as having it in abundance. I've coached a bunch of kids that I'd say were hyperactive or had short attention spans and I made the most of it. Not much talk, lots of action, keep everyone engaged...
