2019 Mets: My Agent Is Now My GM

eh - blowing leads by giving up rockets to the wall is normal crappy closer. You're not a Mets closer until you're blowing games by balking in the winning run or walking the bases loaded on 12 straight pitches

Am I crazy? I thought it was flipped (0-7 under 20 sec in playoff)

And it’ll be stupid. Especially after Klay went out again they were doubling him every second on offense, they just couldn’t sustain that level of injuries. There’s no shame in losing a title because you lose your key players at the very end

Ballboy down the 3B line just made a great backhand on a scalded ball in NYM at AZ Only problem was that it was a fair ball in play

On the plus side for them, they've only had 3 games against Miami so far, unlike ATL (5-1), NY (5-0), and PHI (5-2). So there's plenty of games left against the bottom of the NL East On the minus, they're 1-2 in those 3 games, so they need to take advantage in the future (related tangent -...

    The Caster Semenya decision

I think this is a really good post. Sports in general tries to keep things broadly fair - that's why, for example, there's seven weight classes in Judo in the Olympics, because no-one really wants to see a 100kg guy kick a 55kg opponent. The entire 'women's' sport separation was an attempt to...

March/April MLB game thread: “It’s big ball chunky time!”

The Mets are going to need to sign a vaguely competent 5th starter if they are going to make an effort to compete this year. Vargas' line today at Braves: 1/3 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 4ER (1 man still on base), including 1 bases loaded walk

    2019 MLB regular season news.

I mean, you seem to be assuming that Albies is sort of not in the picture there and it's all his agent's choice? There's no way to judge this without knowing his personal risk/reward tolerance. To use an example that I can pull rapidly, in 2013 (or 2014) everyone would've thought Travis...

And they ask why MLB attendance has been decreasing

Also, stubhub fees alone probably double that - Which is part of the problem, even if you find cheap tickets (by face), the ancillary costs set an annoyingly high floor Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a ton (especially relative to other major sports). But to me when you have teams at sub 1/4 full...

March/April MLB game thread: “It’s big ball chunky time!”

Mets have been very good so far this year; they've been (outside of today) scoring without HRs, which is a nice change of pace from the past few years, and the pitching (outside of the 5th starter and the middle bullpen) has been quite good. The funny thing is, if they went out today and signed...

And they ask why MLB attendance has been decreasing

I don’t think it helps I mean, first of all you have to define affordable - most places even cheapest tickets are in the $12-$15 range, so that’s $50 for a family of 4. Then you have either $20 parking or mass transit (often similar in many areas). Add in any food and you’re talking $100...

And they ask why MLB attendance has been decreasing

That's fine; but this past week Mets fans outnumbered Marlins fans in Miami (the game on Tuesday drew just 5,934). At some point, it's A) embarrassing for MLB, and B) detrimental to the long-term health of the game to lose an entire generation of young fans.

NL pitchers continue to say 'screw you, DH' (DeGrom just went deep in Miami)

Baseball Is Broken (off the field/labor relations etc.)

I haven't fully worked out the exact mechanism of this, but... what about tying revenue sharing $ to total attendance #s? I fully admit there's a lot you'd have to do to avoid extreme gaming of this, but the basic thesis is - right now a team (Marlins) can easily turn a profit just from an even...

    2019 MLB regular season news.

On average, sure; but how much more would, say, Matt Harvey have made signing a deal like this vs his current situation? I find it very difficult to say 'don't take $100M' is a good choice when the downside risk, even if rare, is so high

Is 100 Years long enough? The Shoeless Joe Thread.

I guess the note to that note, though, is that in terms of MLB's official rules the ban essentially ceases to be functional once the person dies (since a dead person isn't going to be employed by a club or have a business relationship with MLB). The fact that the HoF uses that list to define...

Is 100 Years long enough? The Shoeless Joe Thread.

I mean I'd say yes, but I'm also a yes on Bonds/Clemens/etc... in general I think it's better to have an inclusive HoF that includes the best and most notable players but provides the full story rather than one that ignores them

Baseball Is Broken (on the field, proposed rule changes, attendance, etc.)

Nate Silver has a plan: limit rosters to 10 pitchers (+ an emergency pitcher) It's not the worst idea, but the strikeout and usage numbers are also pretty nice to see simply
