There
Ohtani just got rung up on a ball 4, almost half a foot off the plate.
That was brutal, but probably karma after the walk in his first AB when balls 1 & 2 were very plainly strikes, and ball 3 was borderline.

Ohtani 24 up 24 down after two leadoff singles in the 1st (1 walk in 6th, DP right after), 13 K. Not going to go out for the 9th (108 pitches), but probably could have.
Yeah it went from uh-oh this could be a short outing to holy moly pretty fast. Last three starts 21 IP, 25 K, 1 ER.

Lucas Giolito is sporting a 9.47 ERA over his past 5 starts, with a 1.127 OPSa. On the season now, his 5.40 ERA is more than twice as many runs as Dylan Cease and Michael Kopek are allowing (although Cease has already allowed 10 unearned runs).

A pretty hilarious sequence of events in the Cardinals/Brewers game yesterday

https://bdata-producedclips.mlb.com/36c95451-673e-412d-a708-d5cfb3611197.mp4

Goldschmidt has 3.9 bWAR for the season so far, for a career total of 54.6. The Cardinals trade for him and subsequent extension has to be one of the best trades of the last few years. Carson Kelly, Luke, Weaver, and Andrew Young have accumulated a total of 2.5 bWAR in their collective careers. Goldschmidt has 14.7 in his 4 years with STL, one of those being the COVID shortened year.

In the first game of an Angels home stand against the Mariners, Mike Trout goes 2-3 with a 3B, a HR, and a walk. Angels lose 4-3. That is 6 HRs in 6 games against the Mariners this season for Trout.

That was some very weird movement at the end, can't really fault J-Rod for misplaying that.

Not a lot to be encouraged about on the D-Backs side either. Carson Kelly has a .299 OPS in 93 PA this year, Weaver has a 14.04 ERA in 8.1 innings, and Andrew Young is hitting .210/.347/.379 between AA/AAA for the Nats.

Padres beat the Phillies 1-0. Nola beat Nola. First time ever a player drove in the only run of the game against his brother.

Orioles up 2-1 in the 5th at the White Sox after beating them twice already. Any other owner and I’d say a loss today and tomorrow would get LaRussa fired, but Reinsdorf loves Tony L.

Heh, of course Phil Nevin is the one who poured gas on the flames there, so so glad NY fired that bozo.

What started all of this today? I caught the end of the game last night and Trout got buzzed up and in but nothing came of it and they just intentionally walked him after.

All of this reads as the Angels doing stupid things in frustration as their 27-17 start gets wasted. Trout was not beaned last night, it was a brushback because he's murdering them at the plate, but apparently Trout was really upset after the game.

I was just about to post something along these lines.

I don’t watch much baseball anymore but it does seem like Nevin is disproportionately involved in shit like this

It’s exactly this. Nevin even went so far as to swap out the scheduled starter for an opener so he could be ejected without messing up the game plan too much. And Rendon - on the DL and out for the season! - came out punching the guy who had just been hit by the pitch! I’d love to see MLB come down extra-hard on Nevin, but they won’t.

A-Rod and Kay interviewing Tony Danza now. Gripping television.
You never have to listen to them anymore if you don't want (and why would you?), Cone is on the main broadcast on ESPN (you are on ESPN2, I think).

Is there any recourse for MLB in regards to Rendon? Seems like he should at least not see the bench for a while during games.

Harrisburg, Pa.
LSU just hired the Twins’ pitching coach to be its pitching coach. Weird for a MLB coach to leave mid-season for the same position for a college program.

And from Nevin (per mlb.com) “Yeah, I mean, like I said after the game, we get it. A lot of balls are getting away,” Nevin said before the series finale. “We’ve talked about the balls not getting rubbed up well, and [Swanson] could’ve done a little bit better job of it. There’s probably not more to be added to that."

Anyone watching SNB? Braves attempting to steal third and the Dodgers catchers throw to third….hits the Braves hitters bat. Have never seen that happen before

I think it was Blake Swihart once who tried to throw a runner out at third and just drilled the batter in the gut point blank. He was in the minors still

Jansen just blew the save tied 2-2 going to the bottom of the 9th. And only tied because the Braves CF made a great catch to rub Trea Turner
