""The quickest way to win a game like that is to score touchdowns not field goals, especially considering who's on the other side." Chargers coach Brandon Staley on being aggressive on 4th down against the Chiefs."

And there's the rub; there are teams that when they play the Chiefs, they have a mindset of it's going to be a shootout, you're not going to beat this team by kicking field goals.

Which is exactly what would have happened if they kicked two field goals inside the 5 vs going for touchdowns, then throw in trying a FG from I think it was the 35 or so vs going for it again on 4th down.

That's 9 points they left on the field by being too aggressive vs the Chiefs.
I argued this a few weeks ago when the Pats kicked a million field goals in a win. “You can’t win by kicking field goals”, we are constantly told.

Well, yes you can, if you kick enough of them.

They also scored 7 points on a drive they extended with a fourth down conversion, and another conversion later indirectly led to another score (they wound up fumbling on the goal line, but then the Chiefs threw a pick, so they got the ball on the 2). Replacing all the failed conversions gets you 9 more points (assuming you kick your field goals), but replacing all the 4th down attempts gets you somewhat less.

If the Chargers had kicked just one, they win, which proves your point.

You can go back and forth about it; just take the points.

Going for it on 4th down to keep a drive going is one thing; going for the TD vs kicking the FG is another.

On the first drive, in all fairness, the TD was right there, easy TD that was dropped as he fell to the ground. On the second time they went for it, I think on 2nd down they had a walk in TD that was dropped, the 4th down throw was knocked down by that monumental pain in the ass Sorenson, Jesus do I hate that guy.

And yes, on the drive where they fumbled on fourth down, they got the ball right back thanks to a great play and scored a TD.

Come to think of it, the dropped walk in TD might have been dropped on the drive where they went for it and fumbled............they went for it so many times I've lost track.

The Chargers really blew it, they would have beaten KC twice and been in first place in the division.

Chargers doing Charger things.

Year after year.

Obviously you /can/ win with field goals. It’s not all of nothing. Looking at this game we can say ‘it’s so obvious, they should kicked instead’. Sometimes you see other games where ‘it’s so obvious, they needed to go for it.’

there isn’t an ‘absolute answer’, and this discussion of ‘you must/you mustn’t’ is a little silly it seems.

yeah a field goal could have been the winner…but you can’t know that at half time or whatever. Maybe the Chiefs could have scored another touchdown…and then you’re looking at losing in a totally different way.

I guess it's a case by case/flow of the game issue.

If the Chiefs were lighting up the scoreboard and you were in the middle of a shootout and your defense was getting torched, then sure, go for it, you really have no choice as you try to match them score for score.

If not, it's up to the coach to decide, he gets paid to make those sort of decisions.

It's part of the strategy of the game.

I've just been watching for a couple of minutes, but Josh Allen appears to be having a very rough day so far. Multiple misfires, and now as I type this a fumble that the Bills were lucky to recover.

Not having a kicker is going to kill the Panthers today. That and the fact Cam stinks.

Miami crapping the bed the next two weeks will paradoxically make me even more nervous about the last game of the year for the Pats.

AFC East is going to be the next super-division, like the NFC West is now. BB has reloaded the Pats and has a good QB on a rookie contract. The Bills are good, and will be for a while. And for the first time in forever, the Dolphins and Jets are both headed in the right direction.

There were actual twittering twits last night claiming the Patriots would have beaten the Colts had Cam been the quarterback
The level of stupidity on Twitter seems to have increased, which is really saying something.

Is this a joke about the Jets?

Douglas is well respected, and it’s a total TBD on Saleh, but they’ve got so many talent deficiencies that I’m not sure how you can conclude anything more than ‘the Jets have a lot of picks and cap space so maybe they can become good in the next 2 years’.

They have no idea if they have their QB, most problematically.

Was kind of hoping a matchup vs. the Jets would keep Miami from sucking after the bye (as it seems the majority of the league has)…so much for that…not a fun Sunday so far.

Zach and Saleh are too handsome to fail, I truly believe that.

Jets are definitely not headed in the right direction at present.

And who knows about Miami.
