Well.... he's been terrible the past two years...

60.2 ip, 6.38 era, 1.48 whip, 9.3 k/9, -1.4 bWAR

His career before then wasn't terrible though...

317.0 ip, 3.58 era, 1.22 whip, 9.7 k/9, 4.0 bWAR

So..........??????

He's not so hot right now. Hansel.

Scherff turned it around this year and was turning into a late inning reliever. He probably could have made the team eventually.

I just hope the Sox and Robles bring this back:

May 2019: How The Undertaker inspired MLB's most interesting entrance video

Experienced this at a Sox/Angels game in Anaheim that season...and it was bonkers. The man in the horse mask wearing a robe appearing in the stands behind home plate took it to another level.

I generally don't like the Sox doing minor league antics at Fenway. But...I'd make an exception for this.

Why would they do that when he has options?
I'm far from sure about this, but if he has been on the MLB team all season, I think he wouldn't burn an option in 2021 if he never gets sent down, so that helps in future seasons.

He has to be sent down for at least 20 days, I believe, before an option is burned. If it's a phantom IL trip, presumably that would only be for the minimum 10 days before he's re-activated. In which case, being optioned would accomplish the same thing without burning the option year.

Also, I'm pretty sure MLB would not look kindly on roster manipulation like that just to save an option year.

They mentioned on the WEEI broadcast during the game that Hernandez had a minor oblique thing that had been nagging at him recently being the reason for the trip to the IL. It's not expected to be a major thing/long stint.
