Anderson Espinoza has returned to the mound and is pitching every 6 days it looks like.

To date: 4 games/4starts: 5.87 era, 7.2 ip, 7 hits, 5r/5er, 2bb/10k.

Game Log
2.0 ip, 1 hit, 3k.
0.2 ip, 5 hits, 5r/5er, 2bb/1k
2.0 ip, 1 hit, 3k.
3.0 ip, 0hit, 3k.

Rooting for the kid.
Awesome to see!

he was our next Pedro - and while that hasn’t happened, it’s so sad how much time he lost. He’s still young enough to have a long career.

Last night the Indians were playing with no backup catcher. Yu Chang is the emergency catcher because he told Tito he played the position in high school and they were apparently giving Ernie Clement (utility infielder who made his MLB debut earlier this week) some tips in case it would come to that. This brought up the conversation of emergency catchers and how importantly teams treat it – every team seems to have that guy designated (even if we don't always hear who it is) and it can even affect roster management, but when is the last time a team actually had to press a guy into service behind the plate who had no notable catching experience?

Rick Wise honored in Philly today on the 50 year anniversary of his 2 home run, no hit game vs the Reds. He threw out the first pitch to Larry Bowa.

He's notoriously streaky but I think this is the latest he's been THIS bad. I looked at 2019 and he was down at .146 but that was only on May 20th. He then went on a 35 game stretch hitting .331 to bring his average up to .236. In 2018 he was flirting with the Mendoza line on July 1st but wasn't at this level of batting ineptitude.
Maybe they'll just release him and the Sox can grab him for the minimum.

I’m not sure what the deal was with the mariachi band but Joe Kelly traded his game jersey for one of the band members jackets. Here he is displaying it at the White House.

tweets showing the exchange as well as the picture.

I hate to say it, but I now think of Mookie Betts as a Dodger who used to play for the Red Sox instead of a Red Sox who happens to play for the Dodgers.

There's a story about it up on the The Athletic, and it's about as Joe Kelly as it gets.

https://theathletic.com/2687178/2021/07/02/thats-such-a-joe-kelly-thing-to-do-how-grover-castros-mariachi-jacket-wound-up-in-the-white-house/

The opening:

On Sunday morning, Grover Castro opened his closet door in Mid-City, Los Angeles, and removed his navy blue mariachi suit from its hanger.

Castro, a 23-year-old trumpet player in the group Mariachi Garibaldi de Jaime Cuéllar, had gotten little sleep after playing a few backyard gigs late into the night. But Castro was wide awake. He’d been looking forward to this day for weeks. His mariachi band was scheduled to play the national anthem at a “Viva Los Dodgers” celebration Sunday at Dodger Stadium. Castro pulled on the suit pants and jacket, took one last look in the mirror, then headed to the ballpark.

Five days later, that jacket was inside the White House.

There was no mariachi band in sight, just the jacket. It was worn casually by Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly — one of baseball’s most colorful characters — over a white dress shirt with its top three buttons undone.

Fanbases fall in love with players that are on their team when they win. This team is winning, so now we all love Renfroe, Hernandez, Whitlock etc etc. Betts was great and I am glad we won a World Series with him. But by the time he retires, he will have played more years in Dodger blue and the Red Sox will have won a WS or two without him.

Craig Kimbrel so far this season has given up 10 hits, 10 BB, and 2 ER in 30 2/3 innings. And his K/9 is 15.6
He figured something out.
Hitting is so bad this season, that I am often wondering what percentage of *any* pitcher's newly found success is the result of "figuring something out." That Kimbrel was once great suggests it might be for him.

The great Reggie Smith will be honorary coach for the NL All-Star team. Dave Roberts called him and asked him for a favor and told him he had to say yes.
Reggie hit the first Sox HR I ever saw at Fenway, Aug ‘71 off of Dick Drago.

Betts has been battling a hip issue all year
LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers star outfielder Mookie Betts has dealt with multiple nagging injuries this season, but perhaps none of those ailments have lingered as long as a right hip injury that forced him out of the starting lineup against the Giants for the third consecutive game on Tuesday.
Betts was taken out of Saturday’s game against the Rockies after feeling discomfort while running the bases. The Dodgers said it was right hip inflammation for Betts and that he would be back in the lineup on Monday. Betts was initially listed as the team’s leadoff hitter on Monday, but was a late scratch due to the same injury.

The Dodgers and Betts still believe it’s something that he can manage over the course of the season. But Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said this is the worst Betts has felt with the injury all year.
“It’s been there [and] we’ve managed it, but I think sometimes something triggers it and it is just inflamed,” Roberts said. “I don’t know what it was in particular, but it’s kind of where we’re at right now and we’re just trying to manage it.”

Love seeing Lester play well, even if it’s less and less now.

Also, I’m completely indifferent to Mookie now.

Who, by the way, now has to have cortisone shots in his hip to relieve the pain...the same way Bo Jackson had to before Avascular Necrosis took him out permanently. Imagine knowing something like that was coming way ahead of time...

Until @DaveRoberts'Shoes or @radsoxfan weigh in, I’m not sending Mookie to the glue factory just yet.

I certainly wouldn't send him to the glue factory. "Hip inflammation" is so vague it's hard to speculate.

He also has had back issues this year so could be linked to that, though based on the reporting sounds like they think it's primarily a hip issue at this point.

In general, he has had a higher than usual number of injuries this year, not a great sign for someone that relies on athleticism to get to that next uber-elite level.

His recent hot streak got his line this year to .270/.374/.502/.867. Not bad for a "down year".

Quick check ins:

Andrew Benintendi -- currently at 101 OPS+ for the season. He's batted .196 with a .618 OPS over the past 28 days. He had a red-hot May. but has otherwise had a rough year.

JBJ -- currently at a 50 OPS+. On the plus side, he's hit .320 over the past two weeks, so hopefully he's kicking off one of his hot streaks.

Frankie Montas from the Peavy trade in 2013 is pitching well again after looking lost last year. 7 shutout innings with 10Ks today against the Angels.

Funny you should say that. Because of the Montas post I looked up the trade he went for:

07-30-2013 Traded as part of a 3-team trade by the Boston Red Sox with Cleuluis Rondon (minors) and J.B. Wendelken to the Chicago White Sox. The Detroit Tigers sent Avisail Garcia to the Chicago White Sox. The Detroit Tigers sent Brayan Villarreal to the Boston Red Sox. The Chicago White Sox sent Jake Peavy to the Boston Red Sox. The Boston Red Sox sent Jose Iglesias to the Detroit Tigers.

Probably the most important single event to come out of the trade came in 2013 Game 6 ALCS 7th inning by Iggy.
