How is that going to work with their professional obligations? If the Red Sox decide they want to call Duran up next week (not that I expect it), does he still go play for Team USA?

around the way
I'm happy for them. Seems like a good opportunity to gain some high-level experience. Only possible downside is if they learn anything from Mike Scioscia.

The Sox had to give permission obviously, so I think they have those discussions and Team USA also understands that things can change quickly.

Players on the 40 man are not eligible. Duran gets called up, he can't be a part of Team USA.

BSJ's Sean McAdam has some more details about this:

* Sox outfield instructor and baserunning coordinator Darren Fenster is on the staff of Team USA as third-base coach

* Jeter Downs is also playing for Team Colombia in the same tournament

* If Team USA finishes second or third in this bracket and has to play in the following qualifying round in Taiwan, the Red Sox have not committed to allowing their prospects to play in those games

I think this could be an indicator that Duran is staying down on the farm for a bit longer, barring a run of injuries of course. He'll be with team USA for at least 2 weeks I think between training camp and the actual games, and I don't think they'd let that happen if they had plans for him in the very near term.

Casas is on the final roster, Duran is not.

I wonder if Duran being left off is an indication that the Sox are planning on calling him up before (or during) the Olympics, or at least wanted the door to be left open to that possibility.
From what I've seen, this was 100% USOC's decision, and that the Red Sox were fine with him going (as they are with Casas and Lopez). The USOC is apparently concerned that with the rather stringent quarantine protocols in Japan, if Duran were called up by the Sox, they'd have a hard time filling his roster spot on short notice. So rather than take him and risk his being called up, they left him off.

Sorta sucks for Duran. He’d likely much rather play in the Olympics than Woostah. And there’s no guarantee he gets called up before the Olympics are over.
