Long time Res Sox fan here, but certainly a casual fan who is on SoSH for Celtics stuff.

Putting guys like Larry Walker in the HOF but leaving Manny out is ridiculous, especially when Manny’s vote totals aren’t even sniffing the HOF.

As a RIer, Schilling can go to hell, but by his body of work in MLB should be a HOFer. It will be delicious to see his reaction if he’s rejected again this year.
What is the Hall of Fame for if not for Manny Ramirez? He made baseball worth watching.

Yeah it’s all messed up. They should have nixed the character clause a long time ago.
Especially because there's basically no consistency in how it's applied. Schilling has said horrible things, but how do you judge that vs what Bonds, Clemens, and Vizquel all did off the field? I don't know how you could dq one of them based on character and not dq all of them. And that isn't even getting into all the ped stuff.

I know the character thing is a new convenient excuse for Vizquel, but he doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame anyway.

Here
Guess the assumption is Papi won't be a first ballot guy. Being a DH and the bullshit 2003 testing thing probably carry weight with too many voters.
The 2003 thing is so absurd, but you are probably right. The major issue with the 2003 list is MLB was counting numerous substances as “steroids” on that list that they didn’t end up banning in the long run. It was really done to get a good idea of how many people were on your random GNC shit and how many people would even be eligible to play in their league if X substances were included. So we have no idea what Papi tested positive for and we know he played 13 seasons under the actual protocols and never tested positive once.

If Papi isn’t a first ballot HoFer, they should close it down.

Casual fan here who just looked at his stats. Leading the league in doubles, RBIs, OPS, and Slugging at age 40 in his final season as a capstone to an incredible career? Come on. Those old timepieces should turn in their Smith-Coronas if they don’t vote for Papi on the first ballot.

I agree that Scott Rolen should bet into the HOF. I hope that he can get in before 2024 as that is when Beltre (WAR over 90) is eligible and I fear that Rolen would suffer by comparison.

Curt Schilling is a perfect manifestation of everything that makes people like Curt Schilling absoute pieces of shit. The narcissism, lack of self-reflection, excuse-making, deflection, logical inconsistency, and utter and complete lack of empathy ooze off the proverbial page in every instance of his public discourse. What a miserable prick.

Bob Ryan with quite a take here. Hoo boy

Hey Curt: What Hall of Famer said 12 Swiss Jewish bankers ruled the world, the last 8 US presidents were “traitors” and AIDS was hatched in a Maryland lab in order to kill gays and blacks and still got 95.82 pct of the vote? A: Steve Carlton. P.S. I voted for him and for you.
I mean, Carlton said some pretty wacky shit but I don't see it nearly rising to the level of what Curt has publicly stated. And Carlton had a much, much better career than Schilling did. This is an odd take from Bob.

Wikipedia isn't exactly an irrefutable source, but it looks like those comments were made after his election.

Carlton mostly kept those views to himself when he was a player, though his teammates knew about them. (Tim McCarver once made a comment about how Carlton was always going on about the Elders of Zion and his teammates just rolled their eyes and ignored him.)

He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1994. Later that Spring, he invited a writer from Philadelphia Magazine out to his place in Durango, CO. And it was during that interview where his nonsense spewed forth.

The Hall decided that, as he had already been elected, there was nothing they could do about it and they moved forward.

To be fair, Carlton, unlike Schilling, never looked to promote his views. (He never gave interviews and did so only because he had recently been elected to the HoF. The garbage just came out organically.) Even the author of the piece, Pat Jordan, described Carlton as being motivated by his own personal fears rather than any sense of hatred.

"He's a fearful man, one of the most fearful men I've ever met. Fear is a dominating thing with Carlton. And whenever you have a personal neurosis like that -- be it fear, anger, guilt, whatever -- you justify it by pointing to the outside world for reasons or influences. When he feels it {fear}, he hunts around, points to all these conspiracies that might or might not be related. ... He takes to heart just about anything he reads. And he doesn't see the contradictions in the things he reads."

That said, Carlton is a trash human being and I've already indicated that I have no problem removing him from the HoF. Bob Ryan's take is utter, complete bullshit.

There's going to be enough voters who think he did roids to keep him out for the first time. Not to mention the DH issue. If they won't vote in Bonds or Clemens it's going to be tough for anyone to get in with suspicions.

Bonds was the best positional player of the last 40 years, and Clemens the best pitcher, so if they don't get in next year, but Baines is still in, I'm pretty much done with the BBHOF.

Silly take. It is perfectly reasonable to hold performance enhancing drug use against those players. You may disagree, but it seems a plurality of voters feel that way.

The Hall of Fame museum and all the baseball themed stores in Cooperstown are pretty much Mecca to me. I hope to make my fourth trip this year. After my first visit 25 years ago, I realized the actual Hall is just about the least interesting thing in town and have never been able to get all that worked up about who the BBWAA decides deserves a plaque on a wall. Hell, the worst thing about Cooperstown is the ubiquity of Pete Rose there.
