SLOAN’s NOT GONNA ACCEPT ANY CALLS AGAINST CHICAGO. There should be nothing called against them. I never saw anyone in my life POP OFF as much as this loud mouth.... WOW.... and Phil Johnson isn’t a whole lot better. When he was at Kansas City he was one of the leaders in technicals anyhow. And Sloan I mean really carrying on a tradition that was his when he was a player. The fake falls, the Stanislawski movements... he started the whole thing I think...”

Rick Barry’s going to the line and he’s griping about something else.....
I’ve never seen anyone in my life who had more to say.... I mean what is he gonna run the clock ? the whistle ? take care of the parking ??? He’s runnin the ball game. His mouth never stops. He’s been in the league 15 years and he’s still the BRAT.

And Barry... with all you say about him... you call him a brat, you say he wants his pablum, he gripes and complains and disrupts ball games with his mouth and acts as if he don’t care, you don’t touch him, he has liberties that other people don’t have.... when all is said and done, he’s still one of the greatest players in the game...Pablum or no Pablum... And when he finally retires I guess they ought to give him a gold rattle !!

Before there was McFilthy and McNasty, he used to call Caldwell and Bobby Jones the Hatchet Brothers, IIRC.
He also regularly accused Dr. J, Magic, and Kareem of crying after every foul they committed against the Celts--which was great if you were watching TV with the volume off and Johnny on the radio, watching one of those three merely shake his head two or three times while Most insisted they were screaming in protest.
If memory serves, I also believe CBS (who had the NBA rights then) once showed a series of plays, first narrated by the ever-smooth and relatively objective Chick Hearn, followed by Most.
He absolutely hated Jake O'Donnell, always accusing him of having it in for the Celtics.

I would like to thank the security people here at the Philadelphia Spectrum for keeping us alive! In the background you can hear **** you, Most!!!! quite plainly. This is the game where numerous showers of beer hit the backboard and Kevin McHale had to clean off the residue with what looked like a dry mop. "Next they'll have him selling popcorn!" AH AH AH! (that cigarette infested deep laugh) (Game 6 ECF, 1981).

It's not one of his most famous calls, but let us not forget the time his cigarette ashes dropped into his lap and he caught on fire while broadcasting. Ordway was conflicted as he couldn't decide whether to continue convulsing in laughter, take over play-by-play, rescue his partner, or all of the above...
It's strange what you remember after all these years. in the early 70's (I think) WBZ was having a "smoke out". All the DJ's and Johnny were going to give it a go. I remember them interviewing Johnny before the game and he sounded serious about quitting.
I don't think he lasted until the second half.

The first time I ever heard Chick Hearn I was in LA on vacation. I was horrified. It was the Scott Wedman May massacre. Hearn was absolutely destroying the Lakers players and praising the Celtics. I was disoriented.

Damn, those 60's games against Philly were just awesome. And it was all radio and some film on the local news hours later.

I still quote "Justice!" which was Johnny's line after an opponent would miss a free throw awarded on a Celtics foul that Most thought was undeserved (most of 'em...)

I think it was halftime of Game 5 of the 1987 Finals that CBS brought Johnny and Chick Hearn together for a live spot with Brent Musberger. Not sure if that clip exists anywhere, but it was pretty fun.

"Pandemonium loose in this Garden! Pandemonium right now!" as the Celtics go up by 28 in the 4th quarter of Game 6 of the 1986 Finals.

Johnny would refer to the "Madison Square Zoo" where "It's been almost 5 minutes since I have heard an obscenity".

His reference to Isiah Thomas as "Little Lord Fauntleroy" was probably my favorite.

“Landsberger SMASHES into Maxwell. Theus picks up the loose ball and lays it in and Archibald is absolutely disgusted with Ralph Lembo and gives him that kind of a look”

Johnny did refer to Darryl Dawkins as a big gorilla on several occasions. Not endorsed by this poster by any means.

We used to rent a middle school gym in Framingham in the 80s. One Sunday night, there was a kid playing I didn't know. One of the other guys said "this guy walked in and asked if his son could play, and we said yes". It was Johnny and his kid (high school age) ended up being a regular attendee that winter-spring. Johnny was only there that once. It was before he got really sick, but he did not look healthy even then.
