Could easily have been MVP of 2018 World Series.

Is also a candidate for Boston sports star with largest gap between on-field performance and fan perception/appreciation of said performance. IOW, he was pretty good but not particularly well liked.

Thank you for winning your first playoff start as a member of the Red Sox.
Have fun being the #3 starter in LA, where the media pressure is less intense.

You seemed like a bit of a prick sometimes, but then so do I and I don't have the Boston sports media breathing down my neck. You took way more heat than you should have while you were here, and you responded by carrying us to a World Series.

Thanks, David. Genuinely, thank you.

Thank you David. You were at your best when the team needed you the most. Your run in the Playoffs and World Series of 2018 will never be forgotten. Best of luck to you in your career and afterward.

Waxing bad poetic:

Thank you, David Price. I loved hating you as a Ray, as a Tiger and a Jay.
When you joined the club, I said some terse choice words small children shouldn't say.
Then 2018 came around and all those feelings went (mostly) away.

Now you're off to bluer pastures with your salary to boot.
But did you have to take our darling hero Betts, our dear Mook?
Baseball's just a business so the mourning point is moot.

-----
Anyway, I can't see how this team could have held both Price and Big Papi at the same time. I'm really glad that never had to happen. Thanks for 2018, DP. I'll go back to loving hating you in Dodger Blue.

I didn't hate him like others did, but I thought it was a head-scratcher at the time. But his 2018 performance cements him in Red Sox history in a wonderful way. Loved watching him pitch that year, especially in the postseason -- a sentence many probably would not have said before that season. Hope he has a successful rest of his career, especially when the Dodgers are playing the Yankees. (A man can dream, right?)

Funny I just came here to post that Price was basically the pitching equivalent of JD Drew.
Living is Saskatchewan I don't see any MLB games, but I remembered many SODH discussions of appreciating JD in RF if you saw him live. I got to see him and it was true. He got exceptional jumps , and a ball that looked like a double off the bat would land in JD's glove as if hit right at him, or after a speedy run he would slow and casually pull it in. One game I was at he and Coco cisp both his triples. My wife, a track athlete and coach insisted JD was at least as fast, maybe faster than Coco, and praised his running form. I argued, and went to the highlights with stop watch to prove her wrong. I am not a rookie so I waited until I was in the doghouse a bit ti tell her, by the way, she was right JD Drew went 1st to 3rd way faster than Coco Crisp.

So, after all the hemming and hawing about the contract and discussing the opt out and everything else, it looks like the cost of Price was 4/169, with 48 million of it shifted to later years.

That's a pretty big cost. But I'll never forget 2018.

Thanks very much big guy. Good luck.

Right, but he didn't care.

Price's alleged misdeeds in Boston consisted of defending a younger teammate from the glare of criticism from the famously hostile Boston media, in the process taking it on himself. There's a kind of leadership in that. You can understand why his teammates love him.

He shouldered a lot of pressure in the 2017 and 2018 postseasons and pitched tremendously. He earned the entirety of his contract in about two weeks in October 2018, so far as I'm concerned.

A great pitcher, and (I strongly suspect) a good dude, if not a cuddly one. I predict big things from him in Dodger Blue, at least for this year, and I'll be rooting for him.

I wish he'd been healthier and I wish he didn't always seem like he was irritated at everything. Came through with 3 magnificent starts to end 2018 and win a WS.

I think my girlfriend followed his dog on Instagram.

What you see as defending a young teammate, I see as giving a 62-year old man a choice between humiliation or a fist fight with a much younger man.

David, you were always one of the players in baseball I liked least. The laundry didn't change that. I hated the contract and the fit from the moment I heard about it and it is in part responsible for helping Mookie out the door. Thank you for a few good games in the playoffs. Enjoy getting paid to leave.

It surprised the hell out of me to hear that Gordon Hayward has a higher salary than Price.
He was our best playoff pitcher in 2018 and 2017. Great team player. Lightening rod for the Boston media.

I doubt he stays healthy for much of the next 3 years, so I'm ok with the salary dump. But he pitched his butt off for this team.

My 2018 WS MVP, no disrespect to Pearce. Thank you for all you did getting us that 2018 banner, David, and I wish you many more playoff runs in the future.

Mine as well, especially since I was lucky enough to take my son to Game 2 and watch Price outpitch Ryu.

I loved Price before he came, I was so glad he did, and I hope he has nothing but success going forward. He obviously loves to compete, loves standing up for his dudes, and gives it his all - I never doubted his commitment or effort, and I was continually dismayed at the gruff he got in the press and on here.

Probably my most substantive posts on this site were about his mechanics - he's the kind of pitcher I love to watch work. I'm lucky to live in LA and get to see these two studs for a least this year, but I will miss having Price go every 5th day (or so . . .) for us.

Was so happy for him when he won ALCS 5. And mowed them down after the leadoff homer in WS 5. Reminded me of Garnett's "I knocked the bully's ass out" moment. And I echo the sentiment that he was WS MVP that year. Thanks for the effective pitching throughout and for getting the monkey off your back in style, David Price.

In his 4 years with Sox, at a cost of $30M per year, he was meh, injured, good and meh/injured. He did make a big contribution to the 2018 WS win but we're still on the hook for $45M.

Boston fans don't care about one measly little championship anymore. What about the three years he DIDN'T win it all here? What a bum!

Bernie Carbo is still beloved around here because he hit a clutch home run that time 45 years ago when we almost won a championship. But Price is hated by many Red Sox fans. The spoiled, ungrateful ones.

Price is hated not because he didn’t perform, but because of how he acted toward the media and fans. You know this and are simply trolling.

Also he was as bad against NY as any Red Sox pitcher in history has been (I am not fact-checking this), so that factors in too.

You're supposed to get over gripes like that when a guy is a huge part of winning a title. Unless you take titles for granted and care more about being nice to media types.

I hated Price since the 2008 ALCS. He's always been insufferable since day one. He and Lackey are two of the hardest to root for athletes ever.

Glad he's gone to be honest.

Years after he's done, the thing I'm going to remember most is his petty feud with Eck, and how small he always came up against the Yankees, not that he threw one good game in the World Series. There were lots of heroes in the World Series.

There are now rules to fandom?
You can do whatever you want. If you get called entitled for it, deal with it. Don't call it "trolling" because you don't like the response of people who value championship more than you do and are capable of forgiving people who deliver them.

Any Red Sox fan that can’t appreciate what David Price accomplished here can kiss the fattest part of my ass. Forget the contract, your thoughts about his attitude, or his squabbles with the media. The man helped deliver a championship to this team and it’s a trophy that we wouldn’t be celebrating without his contributions.

David Price didn’t play a role in winning a title, he was one of the primary driving forces in securing it. After all of the bullshit about his lack of intestinal fortitude or how overpaid he was, the man took the mound on the brightest stage with the stakes at their peak and delivered. 6 shutout innings in Houston, 6 innings of 2 run ball in Game 2 of the World Series, and a masterful 7 innings of 1 run pitching in the clinching Game 5 on the road in LA. David Price had a legitimate argument to be the World Series MVP.

David Price will always be one of my favorite players and I have nothing but gratitude towards him for the time he spent with the Red Sox and what he accomplished here. He was brought here to help us win the World Series and he did just that.
