Yea Maeda to the twins makes sense. But the twins wouldnt give up a top prospect for Maeda. one of their pitchers i guess?

i will never, ever understand the whole payroll reduction thing for a team valued in the billions owned by a sports group valued at many more billions. i hate this so much. emotions are high, but i'm sorry, despite all the championships in the world, unless there's something we don't know, this ownership group makes no sense.
Its the vacant farm system that makes the pick penalties so difficult to swallow. Its not just the money.

Thats partly picks that havent turned out and partly prospects traded for valuable pieces.

In itself, would Betts and a 50% subsidized Price for Verdugo and May make sense for both sides?

If May is going to MIN, then I really don't know what we're getting back that makes any amount of sense.

If we send Betts and Price, while paying Price to move, and get back just one guy with a bad back and nothing else I will seriously consider not buying any tickets this season. That’d be an almost historical uneven trade. If true Bloom has explaining to do imo.

If I was Vegas I’d put it at 85, but personally I wouldn’t be surprised if they got to 90.
I’ll be stunned if they even win 80 next season. They see screwed. Don’t even have a full starting rotation & relying on two guys who can’t stay healthy if their life depends on it is not inspiring any confidence.

As I posted a few times this past week. When the deal goes through, plan on being very disappointed with the return. Mookie is a generational player, but Sox had little leverage to work with.

Passan confirms:

Starter Kenta Maeda would go to the Minnesota Twins part of the Mookie Betts-David Price deal, sources tell ESPN. Outfielder Alex Verdugo and hard-throwing pitching prospect Brusdar Graterol, who has been with Minnesota, would go to the Red Sox, as
@Ken_Rosenthal said.

Graterol is a fringe top 50 prospect depending on list you're looking at.

graterol has ceiling of good 1/2 starter and floor of backend reliever? guess we have to trust Bloom and his evaluation of ptchers?

Brusdar Graterdol is the other piece coming according to Rosenthal.

Yup. If you listen to the fans, you’ll be sitting with them soon enough.

With the farm system bare, they’re going to need to spend shrewdly to compete in the early 2020s. Committing $35 million or more per year to a right fielder isn’t consistent with that. So even in the short to medium term, this was a necessary move. I’m not happy with the moves DD made to make this move necessary, but kudos to CB for being decisive.
Exactly where I am at. This sucks, but it probably had to be done.

We can debate how they got here and what they could have done differently, and there is fruitful discussion to be had there. But at this point, it doesn't really matter how they got here. What matters is where they're at and where they go from here.

From Baseball Prospectus:

The Report: Graterol got off to a dominant start in the Pensacola rotation before going down with a shoulder impingement. He came back two months later and the Twins moved him to the bullpen for the rest of his season, which included a September cup of coffee with the big club. In the pen he showed an 80-grade sinker that routinely hit triple digits and featured patently unfair movement. There’s a slider that he ramps up into the low 90s and it’s a potential plus-plus offering as well. It’s one of the best two-pitch combos you will find among prospect arms, and there’s only a handful of major league arms who can boast something better.

So there’s going to be a strong temptation to keep Braterol in the bullpen. 2019 only added to a bad injury track record that already includes a Tommy John surgery. However, Graterol is only 21, and he has shown feel for a potentially average change—although one of the three he threw in the majors per Brooks resulted in a very long Zack Collins home run. He’s not quite as max effort with the delivery as a starter, but it’s not exactly Greg Maddux either. The Twins have rotation spots to offer in 2020, and I’d be tempted to at least give him a shot firing bullets every fifth day. The upside could be worth it, and hey, that elite reliever fallback isn’t going anywhere.

OFP: 70 / No. 2 starter or elite bullpen arm

Variance: High. The durability track record isn’t good and the reliever risk is significant. —Jeffrey Paternostro

Major league ETA: Debuted in 2019

Mark Barry’s Fantasy Take: As a once silent-cowboy-turned-old-guy-yelling-at-an-empty-chair man once said, “You’ve got to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky?” The range of outcomes is huge with Graterol, and the most likely scenario isn’t the most fun for fantasy purposes. Still, his ceiling is so high and the floor (non-injury version) is a very good closer, so he’ll stay in the top-60 or so fairly easily.

If you believe this, you should love the trade. Even if Mookie would’ve turned that 80 wins into 87, that’s probably not good enough to make the coin-flip game, and there would be little prospect of improvement in 2021 due to a total lack of financial flexibility.

It's depressing as hell but this is the return you get when you cut payroll. Losing Betts for almost any package won't be a fair return.

twins moved him to the pen to bring hm up but i imagine we throw him in AAA and let him be a starter until he proves he cant hack it. with JDM probably gone after next season, we should have some money to spend next offseason. curious to see if we spend it

If they are, in fact, only covering half of Price's salary, it gives them a pretty decent amount of room under the threshold that I hope they have a good use for.

Graterol has already had TJ and missed significant time last year with a shoulder impingement.

I am excited about Verdugo. I think he’s going to be great.
Or his back keeps him from playing a single game. Either or.
