Rogers Park
Well nobody goes to the games, so that limits their revenue. They have a capacity of 40K+ and have only gotten over 30K 7 times since it opened in 1991, 4 of which happened right after they opened the stadium with the other 3 occurring consecutively during their brief run in the mid-2000s. The park itself is fairly mediocre and the area surrounding the stadium sucks.
The park is nondescript but I actually really love that Armor Square/Bridgeport/Bronzeville/Chinatown area south of the river.

It’s really well served by transit, and there’s incredible food nearby if you know where to look.

Last time my wife and I went to a game down there, we walked to a Xi’an-style restaurant for a meal after the game. There’s a well regarded Senegalese place I want to try in Bronzeville — maybe next season.

You can’t do that in Wrigleyville.

(They would never do this, but they should redevelop some of the surface parking around the park as amenities. You don’t need 7,500 parking spaces for a 40,000 seat stadium adjacent to two El lines *and* the Metra. Put up some shops, bars, restaurants, and a convenient place to get a cab/Lyft.)

Didn't realize James McCann was a weakness. They really needed an OF first, then starting pitching. Hopefully Grandal keeps hitting enough so they can DH him sometimes, especially if Zack Collins flops.
Along with the pitch framing, McCann's hitting nosedived in there second half last season - 131 OPS+ first half, 81 OPS+ second half. He only made $2.5m last season and will probably get a decent but manageable arbitration bump. The White Sox spent more on salary every year from 2006-2017 than they did last season, topping out at almost $40m more in 2011 ($127m vs $88m). There's lots of room in the budget.

Grandal's switch hitting brings a regular lefty bat into the lineup, which is a major need for the White Sox. For the OF, Luis Robert should be called up in late-April/early-May and be given the rest of the season to bed in. Same with Nick Madrigal at 2B. Kopech will be back. This will be a transitional season for the White Sox. Maybe they spend to bring in a RF for the next few seasons, but I don't expect much to be invested in the pitching this winter.

Reinsdorf has never seemed interested in investing to develop the area around the park. But as Bronzeville and Bridgeport have become "hot" neighborhoods, I think we'll see some projects pop up around there in the next 3-5 years.

They might think that these signings will potentially make the north side attractive to FA pitchers.
That would be just like the White Sox to finally spend money and end up helping their crosstown rivals.

Signing Grandal at least gives the White Sox one batter now who will take a free pass if he's not seeing strikes. His 109 walks this season were 2.5x more than any White Sox hitter had. Chicago was dead last in the majors in walks, and literally every regular in their lineup fit the definition of a free swinger.

This is different. The Mariners signed a AA prospect to a 6 year/$24 million contract.

I came here to find out what SOSH made of this because I feel like I have to be missing something. Doesn't this basically just serve to cost them a few million per season against the tax in his pre-arb years? If they bought a 7th or 8th season from him and pushed free agency that much further away that would seem like a reasonable exchange for a middle market team. Great move for the player though. Baseball America has him at #1 and nothing really jumps off the page stats-wise.

They have options for the three years after that which total around $30M for the three years, so potential control on him until he is 32 with a maximum cost of around $55M for the next 9 years.

Braves sign Travis D’Arnaud for 2/16.
F**k. I wanted him on a team I don’t despise. Was hoping the Red Sox would go after him as a Backup catcher (60 games when a righty is pitching), RH part of 1B platoon (40 games when a lefty is pitching) and 10th hitter role on other days. In a normal Red Sox budget process, that would be well worth it. But that’s a little richer than I thought he’d go for.

that's an unusual trade, the Brewers-Padres one. A young infielder and a starter.... for a young infielder and a starter.

The Brewers have Hiura, so maybe they’re giving up on Arcia at short. Fun trade — I thought Urias would fetch more than Grisham and Davies.

Dylan Bundy also close to getting moved, according to Feinsand. It’d still be a shocker but I don’t hate the idea of the Sox trying to buy low and fix him up as a cheap Porcello replacement.

Honestly probably the best thing that could have happened for Grisham after the WC game. He deserves a fresh start

The Urias/Lauer for Grisham/Davies deal is interesting. Clearly the Padres think they need a CF, which Grisham can play and think they are upgrading their staff. And do they stick Ty France at 2B and live with it or do they sign someone to play there until Xavier Edwards is ready?

I like this deal a lot more for the Brewers, just because I think they are getting the better players long-term. They don't need a CF with Cain and Corey Ray in the minors. Arcia goes on the market for something.

he had a nice rookie year and made an understandable rookie mistake which happened to have a lot of playoff equity. bad take.

fair enough. i guess the brewers dont really have a toxic fanbase but i imagine it has to be nice to not have that on your mind entering next season. brewers fans on reddit seem to mostly blame the loss on Hader blowing it anyway. while i loved it when it happened as i was rooting for the nats, I still felt bad for the guy after everything had settled down. hope he does well in san diego

Villar seems really similar to Jonathan Schoop last year. Both second basemen named Jonathan, both played for BAL and MIL (and were even traded for each other!), both are 28 now, both DFAd because their team didn't want to pay their arb deal. Schoop ended up with a 1/7.5 deal from MIN last year and sat on the bench in the playoffs in favor of the rookie Arraez.

Moustakas has only played 40 games at 2B in the majors, all last season. Should be interesting.

Yeah, I wanted NY to go after Moustakas last year but 4/64 to play 2B is a ton.

Not a Brewers expert but losing both Grandal and Moustakas has to hurt, rosterresource has their current catcher as Manny Pina and their 3B as Tyler Saladino and Travis Shaw (who I thought was in danger of being non-tendered) as their starting 1B.

As I said, Reds are winning the NL Central.

We'll see, I figured Didi would sign there and Galvis would move to 2nd, but now I guess Galvis is the SS and Didi may land elsewhere. CIN is on the rise, but long way to go this offseason still.
