Rory bogeyed 16, but just stuffed one in on 17 for what looks like a kick in eagle. Needs birdie on 18 for a 59.

Travelers week. Weather unsettled through Friday but weekend prospects looking up. Pretty good field again for the week after the US Open. Koepka, Spieth, Bubba, Mickelson, Cantley, DeChambeau, Fleetwood, Casey, Day, Finau, Reed, plus the pro debut of Viktor Hovland. Expect big crowds if the weather cooperates and lots of drinks for me in skyboxes and tents all over the tract.

So, who do you guys like? Every time I read a thread about a tourney and Tiger’s not winning most folks seem to feel like the leaderboard is boring. And when y’all are saying a golfer is boring, are you saying he doesn’t play aggressively or is it his personality on the course or in interviews?

We all like golfers for different reasons. Similar to why you like fighters.

When we say a golfer is boring it could mean any of the reasons you listed.

I find that, typically, I like most of the PGA golfers. Probably 90 percent of them. I think I lean towards a lot of the European guys because they show a sense of humor on the golf course.

I like Rory because he’s the best golfer in the world when he’s playing well, and pound for pound he’s the longest hitter ever.

I like Dustin Johnson because I met him a bunch when I was younger and going to Myrtle Beach with my dad.

Fowler seems cool. Koepka is a beast. Jason Day, injuries aside, seems like an awesome guy. As does Kevin Kisner.

The only ones I really don’t like are Spieth, Kuchar, and Reed.

Here’s the thing about professional golf: there are always piles of generic tour pros and only a few special golfers. Not to take anything away from generic tour pros, they’re all fabulously skilled/talented, but if they aren’t quirky in some way they’re not doing anything interesting out there. If the special players aren’t on the leaderboard we’re usually stuck a bunch of guys who are all mostly interchangeable.

Also, lately a lot of the better players with a special talent feature power as their only special talent. A 320 vs. 280 drive makes zero difference to the viewer. Ditto for pulling a 4i vs 6i from 200 yards. It’s a huge help on the course, and why they’re succeeding, but power golf is boring golf.

I love you.

Gary woodland seems like a really good guy. A great example that until some of these guys really get into the limelight we don't see what they are all about.

I don't know who he is, but 3 holes ago Zach Sucher had a 5 shot lead. He has proceeded to hit so many bad shots, it's hard to believe he's on the PGA tour. The lead is gone. I feel very badly, he's so rattled, he can't do anything and he's been left with 3 BRUTAL bunker shots, that you couldn't do much to begin with.

edit - that's a bogey and two doubles in 3 holes. He's behind by a stroke now. That's a rough 3 holes. I wonder how the rest of the round is going to go. I'm nervous.

He bounced back nicely. Could tie for second.

Edit: Or second outright?

Defenseless course in Detroit this week. The guys on the shotgun start podcast were saying yesterday there was semi-serious talk around the tournament expecting the winner to be near -30.

I'm a bit late to the party with these, but today I was scrolling through the Twitter page of my golf club's pro shop - trying to look up an assistant pro whose name I'd forgotten - and came across two great videos. First, what happens if you give Andy Sullivan 500 golf balls on a 171-yard par 3 - can he make an ace?

https://twitter.com/EuropeanTour/status/1121066284890955777
Second, an impressionist's pretty fair renditions of a number of pro golfers ahead of the Open at Carnoustie last year:

I've enjoyed both of these multiple times today...particularly the former.

And Gary Woodland is +3 through 9. Little bit of a come down from the US Open high.

Speaking of low scores, what's up with the US Senior Open this week? Surely something has gone wrong when -14 is leading a USGA event after two rounds.
It’s the Seniors. They’ve had three times as many winners at double digits under par in the few decades the event has existed than the real tournament has had in its 100+ year history. Nobody wants to see grandpa taking six shots to get out of the high rough, and the 50 year-olds take advantage.

Didn’t know the Nate Lashley story. His parents and girlfriend were killed in a plane crash flying home from watching him play a college event. Jesus.

Shot a 63 today to open a 6-shot lead. Last guy in the field this week as an alternate after falling just short as a Monday Qualifier. Hope he can finish it off tomorrow.

Shot a 63 on day 1 too. Ridiculous.

Hovland making a big move up today. -7 through 14. He needs to rack up a good amount of FedEx points to get into that 126-200 range.

His whole story is really something. I spent some time reading up on him this morning. He basically gave up golf for a long time and was selling houses instead. He’s only been back on tour now for a couple years.

Goosebumps and a few tears as he’s walking up 18. What an incredible story.

After reaching rock bottom a couple weeks ago, according to himself, Saunders just went from leading to double, bogey, bogey, double to 6 back

Wolff's reaction after Morikawa lipped out was awesome.

Bryson just hit like a 30 yard hook from 200+ to 10' on 18.

Edit: they just clocked Wolff's 3-wood ball speed at 171 mph...

Not sure if any of you follow @bobmenery, but he's a friend of mine (another Andover guy, his cousin was the Club Pro for many years) and he's been making these hysterical videos for years where he provides his own commentary on videos from sports to news. He's made a name for himself, and now hangs out with Mickelson, Koepka, Mike Trout and a bunch of other celebs who found his videos ripping on them, and thought they were funny. Anyway, he's in trouble with the PGA:

As usual, the PGA steps on itself...

What an abysmal field at the John Deere. It should be an alternate event to the Scottish Open.

It won’t happen for a variety of reasons, mostly sponsor money, but I like NLU’s idea of making either the Irish or Scottish Open a WGC.

TRUE - good fedex point booster though for some bums (my team...hopefully)
