    Defensive stats like that are useless when looking at how many games mistakes have cost the team. They're okay for looking at a particular player over a couple years, but same sizes are too small and context is too important for errors to use a context-neutral stat like DRS. I can believe that...

    A pitcher with usage restrictions is only useful if the game situation happens to line up with their availability. It also causes more stress on the other members of the staff who have to cover for him when he's not available. Someone who has to pitch on a schedule is called a starter.

    I think it's the age of the 13 man pitching staff. There are only 4 bench spots available and you need a backup catcher, backup middle infielder, and fourth outfielder. There just isn't room for someone who can't play anything other than first base if they're not a starter.
