Euro 2020 Day 9 Game Thread

I don’t have a serious rooting interest in this tournament. Between the special relationship and liking Rashford and Kane, I guess I’m rooting for England. I’m glad France is headed for a result here. They’re probably the best team and have the best player imo. I don’t want any chance of them...

I need to talk to someone about that ridiculous touch by Mbappe that should’ve led to a goal. The successor to Messi and Ronaldo isn’t a striker, I guess.

Kemba Walker + 2021 First Round Pick to OKC for Al Horford, Moses Brown

I wouldn’t trade the 16th pick for Moses Brown. MB is probably better than the median outcome for that pick, and we don’t have to muddle through his rookie year, but I’d take the 1% chance of stumbling onto the next Giannis. That said, giving up that lottery ticket to swap Kemba for Al makes...

    6/16/21 - Richards vs. Anderson - 7:20 pm

Do we think Richards hitting those two batters was related to the new sticky rules, the lower spin rate that Speier was talking about earlier, etc.?

More Accusations of Cheating in MLB

If memory serves, you’re allowed to use video to decipher your opponent’s signs, just not video from a game that’s in progress. I don’t know if there are rules about where cameras can be set up, but so long as the video wasn’t watched until after the game, I’d expect any violation to be minor...

Former OU volleyball player sues over exclusion from team

I’m not a First Amendment lawyer by a long shot, but I’d be surprised if the analysis differs from other mixed-motive discrimination cases. For those unfamiliar with the concept, here’s a quick primer. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mixed_motive_discrimination

Former OU volleyball player sues over exclusion from team

That probably doesn’t extend to a coach at a public university dropping an athlete because of her political speech. I’m skeptical that’s what happened here, but that’s why they are in court. And I suspect it’s why her lawyer downplayed whatever his client said that caused her teammate to call...

    6/15/21 - Rodriguez vs. Peterson - 7:20 pm

Surprised Cora didn’t have a quick hook on E-Rod the 3rd time through the lineup, even though he had been pitching well. Never should’ve faced Acuna.

Former OU volleyball player sues over exclusion from team

I agree. But that isn’t what’s happening here. In addition to her teammate’s report, we have her subsequent inarticulate comment on the “Eyes of Texas” controversy. Would a person who was wrongly accused of racism soon after glibly post emojis in response to a racially charged controversy...

Former OU volleyball player sues over exclusion from team

Gotcha. I thought you were reacting to the actual story, rather than to PC’s reaction to the story, which was obviously intended to be cheeky.

Cal and Camby getting statues at UMass (also Erving and Leamen)

None of them had statue-worthy accomplishments at UMass. Leaman was a good coach, but I’m guessing 217 career wins is the fewest by far for a college basketball coach who is honored with a statue on campus. I personally wouldn’t put up a statue of Erving either, but it’s legit to honor him for...

Former OU volleyball player sues over exclusion from team

Bear in mind that a legal complaint tells only one side of the story. I will be interested to hear what her former coaches and teammates have to say. Even in this one-sided account, it sounds like whatever she said to her teammates was bad enough that one of them called her a racist on social...

Cal and Camby getting statues at UMass (also Erving and Leamen)

Interesting article about statues and college football. https://oklahoman.com/article/5651670/a-bronze-age-for-college-footballbrbehind-the-culture-that-honors-sports-figures-with-statues I would argue that none of the four honored individuals deserve a statue on the UMass campus, but Erving...

    Euro 2021

I had a very different take on the article. The author isn’t conflicted about rooting for England because of history or geopolitics; he’s conflicted because he believes half his country doesn’t accept him as a true Englishman.
