2019 WS - Nationals vs. Astros - Gamethread

I can think of one glorious example: View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8WXdHzvAdc I think you've made a strong overall case about the rule interpretation, but it seems to me that, in this particular instance, Turner's route to first didn't cause the interference -- he was where he was...

Boston v. Detroit (Sack the F*** up)

Yes. If two teams end up tied in points, the first tiebreaker is non-shootout wins (known as "ROW" = regulation and OT wins). Detroit now has one more "ROW" than Boston, so if they end up tied in points, Detroit now has the tiebreaker. BUT, if the Bruins win in regulation or OT and Detroit...

    2015 Men's World Hockey Championships

Russia managed to win the worlds last year (and two other times) with Ovechkin.  My guess is that his presence was not the reason than Canada pummeled them today.

I agree.  Crap call, especially in that situation.

the 2004 ALCS, ten years later

I had the same impression walking into Yankee Stadium that night.  I was at Game 7 in 2003 also, and the mood then was completely different -- even though the Yankees had lost Game 6 at home and were facing Pedro in Game 7, there was still a very upbeat vibe at the stadium.  The fans were there...

the 2004 ALCS, ten years later

I'm glad you mentioned that Kapler play in the 12th.  That was one of the best "forgotten" moments of the entire series.  Almost certainly a  series-saver.  Remember, Cairo was already on second, having singled and having advanced to second when Manny missed the in-between hop, with one out...

    2014 NCAA POOL

I'm sure there are many more than 22 people with 7 wins through the afternoon games, but only 22 people have seven wins AND nailed both upsets (Dayton and Harvard).

    2014 World Juniors

Great ending to a terrific game, and to yet another exciting tournament.    Less than 51 weeks before it all happens again!   (Next year's Group A looks a lot like this year's:  Finland, Canada, U.S., Slovakia, and Germany.  Only one change.)

    2014 World Juniors

Interesting!  I'm not sure you're right, and I'm not sure you're wrong, but . . . I'm starting to think you're right.  I had assumed that the three-team tiebreaker rule was used to eliminate one team, not elevate one.  Now I really wish Switzerland had won in regulation, just to see what the...

    2014 World Juniors

It's moot, as you said, but I love trying to figure out scenarios, so bear with me here:   The goal differential tiebreaker in a three-way tie is used only to eliminate the third team.  (So, let's assume that Switzerland had won 4-3 in regulation.  All three teams split their games, but the goal...

    2014 World Juniors

I don't think so, at least as I read the tiebreaker rules.  In a three-team tie, you take common games to eliminate one team (here, Switzerland), and the remaining tied teams are ranked by a head-to-head tiebreaker (Finland over Russia).

    2014 World Juniors

Bummer.  The US certainly has its work cut out for it now if it wants to defend its title:  Russia in the quarters, (probably) Sweden in the semis, and (probably) Canada in the finals.  That's a tough road.   Canada gets Switzerland, the Czech Republic/Finland winner, and the...

    Hall of Fame balloting

Wow, this is a loaded candidate list.    My ballot would be:   Bonds Maddux Clemens Thomas Biggio Glavine Raines Bagwell Piazza Trammell   If it weren't for space, I'd probably vote for Schilling, McGwire, Sosa, and E. Martinez, and would think seriously about Palmeiro and Kent.    All of the...
