LOL. Wish I’d come up with that.

    Red Sox Offseason discussion

It’s the 4th inning and the Sox are winning but Cora hasn’t used his closer yet. Now, maybe he will (it’s certainly possible and I don’t want to suggest that it isn’t!) But it’s an open question whether he will. We haven’t SEEN Cora use his closer yet. Maybe the Sox will hold the lead and win...

    Red Sox Offseason discussion

Just curious why it matters so much whether it’s Schwarber. I think we all believe Bloom is going to acquire another big bat. I like Schwarber a lot and would love to have him back. But if he signs elsewhere and Bloom gets somebody else good, well I guess that will be fine, too.

Poll: How long will the MLB lockout last?

Most happy to change the title but I can’t figure out how to do it!

Hunter Renfroe traded to Brewers for JBJ and 2 prospects

I was responding to a line in a post that I'll copy and paste here: "The only thing I worry about with JBJ's defense is that its based on speed." My response dealt entirely with the fact that the excellence of JBJ's defense has never been rooted in speed. That is not the same thing as saying...

Hunter Renfroe traded to Brewers for JBJ and 2 prospects

This is a fair concern, but the SoxProspsects guys often point out that proximity to the big leagues is a significant driver of prospect rankings. Binelas, in particular, seems like the sort of prospect who could shoot up the rankings as he climbs the minor league ladder and gets closer to the...

Hunter Renfroe traded to Brewers for JBJ and 2 prospects

If that's the only thing you worry about with JBJ's defense then you should feel pretty good about his defense. JBJ has never been a blazer. He's been outstanding with his reads and his routes. This article from 2017 had him registering 27.2 feet per second in Statcast sprint speed data. The MLB...

Hunter Renfroe traded to Brewers for JBJ and 2 prospects

Is there any evidence that he wasn't? Is there any evidence of anything right now? There is a lot of off-season yet to unfold. This transaction was doubtless just one part of a a bigger plan, and it's possible that even Bloom won't know for certain what JBJ's ultimate role will be until the dust...

Hunter Renfroe traded to Brewers for JBJ and 2 prospects

Renfroe’s performance last season does seem to have been in line with his 2018 and 2019 seasons. He’s a good value at $3 million. He’s projected to make more than twice that this year and Steamer, FWIW, is projecting a decline this year of a half-win. I think Bloom knew who Renfroe was when he...

    Sox sign Wacha

Yes, exactly. Option A is the correct answer. Options B and C are the incorrect answers.

Red Sox sign James Paxton- 1/$10m+ 2yr club option

I mean, you yourself point out that "this is a temporary thing." So if you accept that it's a temporary strategy, the next question is, why would the Sox be pursuing it right now? Short of publishing an ad in the Globe in which they announce that their short-term strategy is to compete for a...

    Sox sign Wacha

Once again: Bloom has a plan. Bloom is executing that plan in a very disciplined and consistent way. Bloom is steadily improving the minor league system, steadily improving the 40-man roster, and steadily improving the big league club. When Bloom believes that the Sox are ready to compete for...

    Red Sox Offseason discussion

I don’t disagree at all with your analysis. I was responding to the idea that the only path he has to improving his defense at third is losing weight. As I mentioned, there may well be advantages to losing weight for him and his overall game, but the primary concern with his defense heading into...

2021 MLB offseason - news and notes

This spending on free agents may seem bonkers, but I think that’s true only within the context of the lockout saber-rattling from the owners. As a matter of simple economics, I think it is actually quite logical. Lots more money in the game, so it makes sense that salaries would go up quite a...

    Red Sox Offseason discussion

Devers is broadly understood to have acceptable range for an MLB third baseman. Most of the concern regarding his fielding involves his throws. According to the Globe, 10 of his 22 errors last season came on throws—most among 3B and fourth in baseball. So no, dropping a lot of weight is...
