MLB 2020: We're Playing, but We Can't Agree on Anything

I totally agree. Not only do I not see any downside to whatever they end up deciding to do, the only downside I see is not doing anything and forcing the Red Sox to go through another year of financial austerity. Whatever plan gets the Red Sox a reset luxury tax is a massive positive for the...

MLB 2020: We're Playing, but We Can't Agree on Anything

Don't we at this point just have to write off the 2020 baseball season? Regardless of what they do at this point, this is going to be a bastardized season that will produce a deeply asterisked champion. As a Red Sox fan they can decide this year's champion by throwing darts at a wall for all I...

    Baseball on Television

17 years later, I still have no patience for anyone trying to attribute the result of that game to anything except Grady Little. The Red Sox didn't lose because of Tim Wakefield or because Pedro couldn't get it done or because the Yankees were clutch. There is only one easily identifiable and...

    Red Sox penalties for "Spygate"

Is it common to have your advance scout tasked with decoding opposing catcher's signals also be your in-game video replay analyst? It's ridiculous to have such an employee sitting there knowing a key piece of information about the opposition during a game and then prohibit him from sharing it...

    Gone Brady Gone

For me, it's probably only Pedro who compares to Brady as far as ex-Boston players I want to succeed. It would be nice to see Brady and Belichick each win at least one more, to throw cold water on all the hot takes about whether one's success was dependent on the other. Both greatest of all...

Chris Sale 2020 - TJ Bound and Down

100% yes. I almost hope he needs it, because maybe he'll come back from it closer to his peak than he's been the last two years. This is exactly the right season for him to have to miss.

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

Sure. I’m not disputing that players or coaches betting on their own teams is horrible or that it doesn’t affect their decisions. I’m saying it doesn’t put the opposing teams at a disadvantage. And that therefore, while Pete Rose cheated at gambling, he didn’t cheat at baseball.

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

You're talking about cheating the gamblers out of money, not cheating an opponent out of a win. The home-run championship hypothetical you're bringing up is an example of a completely unintended consequence of gambling-motivated decisions, not of an intended victory achieved by cheating.

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

I totally agree. I'm just asking whether this belongs in the category of "cheating." Let me put it another way - Would the Dodgers have any basis to think they lost the World Series unfairly if every Astros player and coach bet on themselves to win?

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

I guess this is semantics, but am I the only one who doesn't think betting on games is cheating? I think that it's the worst sin of sports, and acts as a complete destruction of the integrity of the game, but how is it cheating? Isn't cheating a breaking of a rule or rules in a way that gives...

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

Here's a link to what appears to be a pretty thorough list of health risks that come from the various performance enhancing drugs. No mention of cancer risk in this article, and the brain cancer connection does not appear to have ever been scientifically established, but there are various other...

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

I draw a line between someone like Bonds who took them to get bigger and stronger, and someone like Andy Pettite or Julian Edelman who were taking PEDs to heal quicker from injury. Don’t get me wrong though, I know that’s a thin line and the motivation for taking them is less important than the...

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

The health compromises of football are inherent in the the actual play of the sport. The health compromises of steroid use are not necessary to the play of any sport. Steroid use is a voluntary decision by the player that we don’t allow because any sport can be played without it and its use by...

    Ranking Cheating in Baseball

It's worse to bet on your team to lose, for sure, but I think it's still a mortal sin to bet on your team to win. Every game should be managed to optimize the team's chances to win the championship, which is not the same thing as pulling out all the stops to win a single game. Maximizing your...

MLB’s sign-stealing controversy broadens: Sources say the Red Sox used video replay room illegally in 2018

Way less egregious, and I'd find it hard to believe that there's any team that hasn't been peaking into their own replay room on occasion during their regular seasons. I think MLB has to either put in the in-person monitors for both teams every game or take this out of the category of cheating...
