NFL Schedule Release

Pats haven't played in Europe since 2012. They beat the Raiders in Mexico City in 2017, and Bill's review after wasn't exactly glowing:

"Personally, I wouldn't be in any big rush to do it again. It's a long way to go for a game. There's a lot to it in terms of all the logistics of it. They are not used to having a NFL team so you have to go in there and handle a lot of the logistics. It took a lot of man power, a lot of hours, a lot of energy out of our organization to do that. This week, we're tired. We are exhausted from the trip. It was a good trip, but it took a lot out of us I think."

If it wasn’t Bill, this would have 5-12, 6-11 written all over it. If he gets to 10 that will be coach of the year type stuff.

Yeah, obviously no one knows, yadda yadda, but even WITH Belichick at Head Coach Vegas has the Patriots with the 7th lowest win total over/under in the NFL at 7.5 wins. Take him away, and it's a bottom 3 projection I imagine.

Cincinnati Bengals Over 11.5 (-110) Under 11.5 (-110)
Kansas City Chiefs Over 11.5 (-110) Under 11.5 (-110)
San Francisco 49ers Over 11.5 (+105) Under 11.5 (-125)
Buffalo Bills Over 10.5 (-125) Under 10.5 (+105)
Philadelphia Eagles Over 10.5 (-130) Under 10.5 (+110)
Dallas Cowboys Over 9.5 (-120) Under 9.5 (+100)
Jacksonville Jaguars Over 9.5 (-140) Under 9.5 (+120)
Los Angeles Chargers Over 9.5 (-115) Under 9.5 (-105)
Miami Dolphins Over 9.5 (+110) Under 9.5 (-130)
New Orleans Saints Over 9.5 (+110) Under 9.5 (-130)
New York Jets Over 9.5 (-135) Under 9.5 (+115)

A bit unfair to lose a potential bad weather game in N.E. vs. a team from a warmer climate/dome.

Peter King reporting that the schedule release might be delayed.
The NFL might not be ready to release its 2023 schedule by Thursday after all.

Peter King of NBC Sports reported the league is still in the process of choosing the matchups for tentpole games—such as opening Thursday night, Thanksgiving and Christmas—and that might lead to a delay in announcing the full schedule.
I blame the Jets

Lol boo hoo
Blaming the Jets doesn't mean being upset about it. Quite the opposite. Delaying the signing of Rodgers was clearly the reason for the sudden need to alter the schedule, but for a Pat's fan in the NYC market (me) getting the Jets out of more Sunday time slots and into the prime time games means the possibility of seeing an extra Pats game on TV in NJ on Sundays.

These international games are so fucking stupid. The stadiums are a crapshoot. The travel is brutal. And I’m not remotely convinced that any other country barring Canada (maybe) really gives a shit about American football.

Aren't these games always sold out? As a fan from abroad this line of thinking seems pretty reductive to me. It's good for the sport to want to expand internationally, how is the travel any worse than going to the west coast?

Belichick’s comments about the Mexico City game suggest they are quite different.

As for reductive, let’s be real: these games are just another hogs at the trough Goodell money grab. The NFL is never seriously going to be a viable internationally beloved game the way, say, the World Baseball Classic is for baseball. Other countries may be intrigued by the spectacle of an American football game, but not much more (which is probably a good thing, because the game itself is poison to the human body).

If you like the games, that’s fine. But let’s not pretend they’re some grand ambassadorial gesture by the league.

Edit: I just realized that you are in Brazil. That’s cool, and I didn’t mean to suggest you don’t deserve a game there – just that I think the league’s motives are mostly bullshit.

The league's motive is profit, which is the motive for every sports enterprise. If there's money to be made abroad, they'll chase it and it looks like there is. Of course, if the NFL remains insular and doesn't push to expand into the international market as it hasn't done for most of its existence it'll never be global.

Up until 2005 my uncle and I had to pay an incredibly expensive DirecTV package to follow the Patriots here before ESPN started showing prime time games. Back then, I didn't know a single other football fan, but now most of my friends follow the sport and have rooting interests and the Super Bowl packs bars and restaurants. That was the result of direct targetting to the audience, an effort was made and fanbases were born and grew. Just this week I had a conversation about the state of the Pats with a guy wearing a Gronk jersey at the gym and it's normal to see people wearing NFL gear in these settings. There's a market here for it and it grows every year. I don't see what's bad about it, especially considering teams generally get byes after these games.

For one it's a 6 hour time difference forward vs. a 3 hour time difference backwards.

So you have to leave earlier and also arrive back sooner, presumably. Such horrific conditions to have to make a 6 hour flight to Europe and get a bye afterwards once every three or four years.
Imagine how tough it must be for players to take a 6 hour flight in a chartered jet. That's like flying to California and nobody in the NFL on the east coast ever flies to California.

Sleep is important for athletes. This messes up sleep a lot. As a fan, I would not want my team to do fly over and get messed up, even if it’s for a week.

As opposed to the opponent, which I can only presume is an European team. And then they likely get a bye afterwards. I just think this is petty reasoning. When the Pats were a wagon no one gave a shit about them being affected by going to London or Mexico City, if this is that important then this team isn't going anywhere for a bit of jet lag to matter anyway.

The Jaguars have back to back games in London. The easier opponent on 10/1 vs Falcons then the Bills on 10/8. This could be a difficult game for Buffalo facing a team that has fully acclimated to the time change. 3 of 4 AFC East teams have a European game. Pats have the "easiest" opponent vs Colts. Dolphins vs Chiefs. Bills vs Jags. Jets do not have a game in Europe. Rodgers needs his rest.

Super fun as a foreign fan to read people put slight jetlag every 3/4 years as more important than giving us outside the US an opportunity to watch the sport live in our own countries.

@rodderick, first off, I count you as a superfan. And I think it’s completely awesome that you live in Brazil and are spreading the joy of the Patriots.

My criticisms earlier in this thread were much more about the NFL in general, which I think is a miserable organization run by a group of toxic owners. To the extent that the goal of every professional sports league is to generate profits, I agree with you.

But compared to other sports leagues, I think the NFL is more profit, driven and care less about the sport, the players or its fans. I also think that goes for international fans, where Major League Baseball and the NBA run circles around the NFL in terms of “growing the sport” around the world. I think it is part of those sports cultures actually whereas with football it is simply about generating more profits for the scumbags and nepo babies that dominate ownership.

Again, I appreciate your knowledge of the sport, and that, without the NFL‘s international efforts, whatever their motivation, it wouldn’t exist – or at least, not in the same way. I just wish this were a league that actually understood and cared more about fans like you. Because I think those efforts would look a lot different.

i think people wildly overblow the Europe games in terms of impact on a team.

It's a half hour to hour longer flight than what SF or LA teams do pretty often, and sure it's 6 hours, but those games are 3 hour differences and they don't get all the extra time built around them, and the home team isn't getting a rest advantage.

Teams complain a ton about neutral site games because it's a nice excuse when you lose.

It’s only a little longer from Boston, but it’s 9-10 for the Colts. And add on passport check (I’m sure it’ll be expedited but still).

But the real tragedy no one talks about is that I’ll have to walk up at 630 to watch this stupid game.

Specific gameplay impacts aside, Adam Schefter revealed some extremely interesting details about how network games will be aired this season:

View: https://twitter.com/AdamSchefter/status/1655674005263622197

NFL will have a Black Friday game for the first time ever.
Games don’t necessarily “belong” to networks anymore. All games are free agents.
Teams can be on Thursday Night Football twice.
Not all teams are guaranteed to have a primetime spot.

All of these are earthshaking compared to years past.

The Black Friday game conflicts with a lot of college and high school games, which has generally been verboten.

Games not "belonging" to networks anymore is also totally wild. We're all so used to the vast majority of Pats games being aired by whichever network owned the AFC rights, CBS for quite some time now. We'd generally see the same couple of broadcast crews from CBS depending on the Pats' place in the hierarchy, usually Kevin Harlan/Trent Green or Ian Eagle/Charles Davis in recent years. The broadcast teams see the same divisions and teams play regularly, and get a better feel for that football roster as the season goes on. And indeed, viewers get used to that broadcast booth and their rhythms. It makes for better TV. Now? We'll have much more opportunity for Fox crews to be in the mix, and in general, I find the Fox crews to be lackluster in comparison.

Multiple TNF games for the same team...ugh. These are already tough enough on a team to prepare for, but to have potentially to do it twice in a season, with only 1 bye to work with, seems awful.

Not all teams getting a primetime slot is generally fine, though a bummer for teams that are clearly set to tank (I'm looking at you, Arizona).

The big one to me is multiple Thurs night games. Unless they play them back to back with a bye after I don't see how a team could possibly play Sunday, Thurs, Sun/Mon. That one will be interesting to see.

So far it's just a person, not people (me). I don't care about the NFL growing its fanbase internationally as I have no equity stake in the league. It has no direct impact on my experience and only a very indirect one that's tenuous at best. I watch football for my own enjoyment.

As a fan, I only care about how the team is doing so I'm looking at it from a very narrow lens of "how will it impact them for the season?". I do not think traveling to Europe is a travesty and huge deal. I do think it is a "minor deal" and in my narrow, short-term view of how I want to enjoy my team, I want to limit the amount of "minor deals" they face in a season.

This also all started with you asking what's different between flying to the west coast vs. Europe. As someone who has done both multiple times, I believe there is a difference and expressed it as such.

You would want the bye before.
So Sunday (or Monday), BYE, Thursday, Thursday, Sunday.
In terms of days between games: 11, 7, 9

If all games are truly free agents, the process for grabbing the biggest games is going to be a corporate knife fight to end all corpo knife fights.
