My alma mater Bucknell is looking. The program (and the Patriot League overall) has been on the decline lately. Transfer portal completely changes the math (negatively, so far) for schools in that tier. Hope a good choice can turn the ship a bit. We have some former player candidates, but I’m intrigued by Bill Murray (yes, that one)’s kid Luke (UConn assistant) who looks to be building to a head coaching opportunity.

Who are the Notre Dame candidates? They just lost former 5-star recruit JJ Starling to the protocol, admission standards are a giant pain in the ass, and they are now down to 5 scholarship players. Yikes!

St John’s and Rick Pitino about to be announced soon if it hasn’t been reported yet.

Conventional wisdom was that ND's preferred candidate wouldn't be known until after the first weekend of the tournament because he would be coaching a team in the tournament. However, now that Monday has arrived and tournament coaches Pitino and Cooley have been reported to accepted new jobs, the speculation is that Porter Moser is the top target because his buyout decreases dramatically on April 1. It could also be Mitch Henderson because his team is still in it, but that seems to be speculative based on Indiana birthplace. I haven't seen his name much from local reporters.

The Big East is interesting as hell again. Three teams in n the Sweet 16, UConn starting to return back to form, Pitino back, and now a big Providence vs Georgetown rivalry now that Cooley has left the Friars to stay in conference.

Great collection of coaches and storylines in the years to come.

The Big East thriving as ESPN weeps is my dream scenario.

Tobin Anderson is leaving FDU for Iona per John Fanta of Fox and others. Great hire for them. Plays a similar style that Pitino did so that will fit well.
I love that this dude leveled up like 86 hours after his team beat Perdue and less than 48 hours after his team lost. College coaches, man ...

That’s the ultimate “strike while the iron’s hot” move. Let’s not forget, his team didn’t even win the NEC Championship and then pulled the big upset. Like hitting the lottery.

He may not even have to move (20-22 miles distance between the schools) but that seems like a lateral move. Maybe he should have waited for a bigger program?

Not sure if you know much about FDU, but literally any move he had made would have been to a bigger program. He totally turned around FDU but their final NET rating was 301st. FDU also has next to no resources. Their head of media relations is a student. Going to Iona is a huge step up in terms of conference affiliation, financial resources, and tradition.

He was a finalist for the Iona job before they hired Pitino, so it's not like he needed this win on his resume to get the job. For the most part, college ADs are not dumb enough to throw money at coaches who win the small sample size lottery of March. Recent exceptions include USC hiring the FGCU guy after their sweet sixteen run (lol). With FDU's resources, finishing outside the bottom 50 and winning in Dayton are just as important as taking down Purdue.

A week ago sure. But they’re going to get some now (spring/summer) I think
They have to have at least one rich alum and they have to have sold some T-shirts and stuff.
edit Peggy Noonan went there and some Billionaire Zygi Wilf. Maybe he wants his name on a new athletic center or something
Edit 2: John Legere too

PS are they going after Seth Greenberg? That would be awesome
(Maybe not for him, his current job is just fine)

The star will fade and FDU will still be FDU just like St. Peter's is still St. Peter's. FDU is in a horrible conference with inadequate funding from the university.

I mean what is he supppsed to do? This is hiring season. It’s when positions are filled.

Many of these things are already lined up ahead of time and not announced.

Oklahoma's performance declined this season, which had to sink Moser's chances. The win over Alabama was huge, but the Sooners never captured that momentum. Moser's recruiting has been ok, pulling multiple 4-star top-100 high schoolers and 4-star transfer each year, but no one who has broken out. Moser has worked well with strong academic standards and in a Catholic institution; he also invests a lot in building program culture and student support for the team. But can you really trust him to rebuild ND after seeing OU struggle?

Moser needs a big step up next season to keep his job. But if Valentine continues to struggle here at Loyola, everyone knows he'd be welcomed home again in a heartbeat. (BTW, Loyola just started up its first NIL collective after getting our assess kicked in the A10.)

You can’t be serious, right? Providence has been a stepping stone to better jobs for successful coaches since Gavitt. Cooley gave us 12 years……probably 7-8 more than we deserved.
Thought your post was about Tobin

But Cooley shouldn’t be going in-conference

PC tried to get Pitino when he was with Louisville and they were in the Big East.
What was the timeframe on that? Perhaps Louisville was looking to get Rick out of town at that point and PC provided a win-win in that regard.

It was when they hired Cooley, in 2011. Pitino arrived at Louisville in 2001, they were in the Big East through 2013 (when they won the National Championship), and left after 2017.

It really is the Island of Misfit Toys. Fun fact, it used to have the shortest road trip in DI, between St Francis (NY) and LIU, about four blocks away down Fulton St, but LIU, fka the Blackbirds with crisp black and white unis, merged with some even more crap DII school in Nassau County and are now some teal and yellow monstrosity called the Sharks, and St Francis just annnounced they’re dropping all DI sports altogether. So yeah, when CCSU is one of your pillars you pretty much blow goats.

It was when they hired Keno. They’d already been publicly turned down twice (Larranaga and Ford). Pitino backed out at the last minute, and they fell into Keno from a point of desperation.

Former University of Hartford head coach (and my neighbor) John Gallagher gets the Manhattan job.....

That's a good old NYC Catholic basket school. The Jaspers. It's in the Bronx, you know. I briefly dated a girl who had graduated from there, second-generation Irish. It's a locus of a still-very-Irishy, unassimilated Irish-American and expat community. For a certain kind of hoops junkie that gym has got to be heaven. Got to be better than a commuter school with no tradition.

At one point, LIU had black and light blue baseball hats that were cartoon-bird Oriole knockoffs. They looked great.
I went to a St. Francis - LIU women's game last year. The St. Francis gym is literally a stone's throw away. My daughter was on her middle school's basketball team so it was a group trip. One of the moms was an LIU grad and had played for them. She was heartbroken that they had given up the Blackbirds identity.

LIU has a beautiful softball field in downtown Brooklyn that they're not using, they're playing out on the island. Their Brooklyn gym appears to be the last holdout in terms of sports that they're playing on the Brooklyn campus.

As I said earlier, for those who saw my thread in the soccer forum about starting to play soccer as a total newbie, I played as the goalkeeper in a 6 v 6 league, playing on this very court which is the LIU home court. It was pretty cool to have the overhead scoreboard tallying our goals. We finished 2-6 so we didn't have many opportunities for time wasting, but if you wanted to run down the clock you could kick the ball over to the bleachers, which were usually almost but not entirely folded up, and get it lost underneath. But there was just a overhang of sadness on the whole thing. The LIU women finished ahead of only CCSU in the NEC and the men couldn't even manage that. And their rival and neighbor was right there with them at the bottom and just decided to fold up shop.

With the try-hard logo, colors, and name, the whole place smells like a franchise in some expansion league that folds before it plays a game.

Both LIU-Brooklyn and LIU-Post are part of the same university system and they decided to merge to form Long Island University. LIU-Brooklyn was all Division I sports and LIU-Post was all Division II sports. So, the D-2 sports that LIU-Brooklyn didn't have are now Division I and any sports that both Brooklyn campus and Brookville(Post) campus had they dropped the ones from Post. Post's football program went up from D-2 to FCS. It is a very poorly run athletic department. They decided to add men's ice hockey during the middle of the pandemic for example.

The hockey program was pretty competitive this year actually. Beat Ohio State and Alaska. Tied Quinnipiac. They played a bunch of overtime games against established programs. Not bad in year 3.

Yeah. It was just crazy at the time they launched it. A lot of schools were strapped for cash with COVID and here they were starting a new program from scratch.

I bet it blows over.

I do love the radio guy baiting him with something transphobic, Huggy going in a homophobic direction, and then the radio guy being completely caught off guard.

No misinterpreting that. Clear as day. Huggins absolutely needs to go. Time for him to retire.
It remains to be seen if Huggs will be gone or not. He is beloved in the state of WV and is actually paid higher than the football coach, which isn't the case at most Power 5 schools. At most schools he would've been gone before the sun came up this morning, but it's a little different there. Most of the big money donors in basketball are extremely tight with him and that money will be gone if he is fired. WVU is caught between the public outcry to fire him and the possibility of a lot of money going away for the program. West Virginia is a conservative state and most of the fans aren't going to care that he said this, in fact I know they feel this way because a majority are saying as much on the message boards. The program will see huge fan exodus if he is fired. Also WVU has the best portal class in the nation coming in for 2023-2024, that would fall apart quickly if he is gone. Most people feel this was going to be his last year anyway and this is his one last shot at a deep run in March.

I'm not condoning what he said at all, just giving the lay of the land in Morgantown.

I understand the lay of the land. I think it's a bunch of excuses, justification for supporting hatred but yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if Huggins keeps his job.

Huggins is most likely getting suspended three games and will have his contract amended, a couple of reports were trickling out of WVU this morning. Official announcement will come later this morning I'd imagine.
