Wow that just sucks. Playing for country and all but still. Oof. I wonder if this will dissuade stars from playing the next time the WBC comes around.

I understand the reasons people are feeling upset , but I don't get the takes at all.

1. He didn't even get hurt playing - he was hurt while celebrating.
2. Even if he did get hurt playing, that could happen in spring training, Opening Day, June, playoffs, etc.

Playing? Probably not. Maybe they'll tone down the celebrations a bit though. Then again, Kendrys Morales's injury didn't stop anyone from jumping up and down at the plate in celebration of a walk-off HR. I don't think anything will change.

Of course he was hurt doing something relatively routine, but did ramping up his body to go full-bore in early March create the circumstances that lead to the injury?

I have no earthly idea as to the answer to that question, but I think it's what MLB teams will be concerned about.

The funny thing is that it did -- for a while. For a season or so after his injury, it was fairly rare to see the "jumping mob" celebration. And then I assume teams got lax about warning guys not to do it and those celebrations started up in earnest again.

No, it was just a freak occurrence. Of course, playing more games increases the likelihood of something like that by definition, but really it's just a super unlikely freak accident.

If there was a concern that "ramping up" too early for WBC was causing undue injuries to players, wouldn't they have figured that out by now? It's not like this is the first time they've played this tournament. It's the fifth.

It's unfortunate what happened to Diaz, but it was a fluke. Over-reacting to it isn't necessary.

I mean his alternative was.... playing in the same amount of games, but just somewhere closer to an Olive Garden?

The funny thing is that the jumping celebrations arguably aren't the most dangerous. I cringe every time there's a walk off hit and half the team starts chasing the hitter into the outfield and tearing at his jersey after the runner crosses the plate.

I think my list of celebration cringes goes:
(1) throwing themselves over/hurdling the barrier in front of the dugout -- so many awkward landings there
(2) jumping onto the plate - Kendrys-type injury or landing on someone's foot
(3) pigpiling, especially when latecomers come in and throw themselves on top of the pile
(4) the chase down/tear off his jersey

Didn't someone also get injured last year while jumping out of the dugout to join an on-field brawl?

Wait a minute. This injury is very sad, but it argues against jumping up and down with a bunch of other guys, not pitching in the WBC.
I agree, but there's a chance somebody is going to come out of the WBC with a 'tired arm' or 'back tightness' and miss some of their professional career. You know, the one they get paid for?
You knew someone would get hurt celebrating? You need to give us some lottery numbers.
I didn't say anything about celebrating.
I trust you have a strict no celebrating policy for your volleyball team.
We'd have to win games in order to celebrate. (Yeah, I know we just won our conference championship, but I'm already in 2023 mid-season glass-half-empty form.)

I actually feel bad for Mets fans, this is not something they should have to deal with 2 weeks before the season opens. Talk about the season being derailed before it even starts for them, good luck with that closer by committee approach we all know to well here in Boston!

I have a hard time believing that the team with a $370M payroll is going to have their season derailed by an injury to one pitcher, even one as good as Diaz. I doubt they even have to take the committee approach. They can put David Robertson in that spot and probably be fine.

I'm just glad that Chris Sale wasn't in a position to celebrate yesterday. Diaz seems to have Sale's luck.

Woah, slow your roll here. You don't expect other members to read posts do you?
It's a race to post "something", no matter how many times it's already been posted

I think teams should have celebration practices
Team jumping, but in place, away from teammates, and then work closer and closer together, so they can jump together, without hurting themselves or others
I blame players for not being ready to celebrate, because they don't do it in pratice

I tend to agree with this. The Mets will probably find a new closer either in Roberston or someone else.

But having spent the money they did and building the team they did this definitely hurts.

The Mets have had their share of bad luck so there was a bit of Karma already for 1986, yeah not enough I know.

One thing that makes me sad is I quite enjoyed Diaz's entrance to the trumpets song.

If the Red Sox had Tom Seaver instead of AL Nipper they would have won. Seaver got injured, just like in 1975 when Jimmy Rice got injured before 75 World Series.
I don’t know. Nip gave up 3 runs in 6 innings and they lost, 6-2. I don’t think that you can say unequivocally that Seaver would have been the difference between winning and losing. (I guess maybe if Seaver had gotten the start over OCB in Game 3 and they’d won that might have been the difference, but that’s not what you’re saying.)

EDIT: Because Can got rocked in the first. Maybe if Seaver had pitched 3-4 scoreless innings from the start things would have played out differently. But I'm not even sure that Seaver in lieu of Can would have made a difference.

I really think Seaver would have made the difference. Think Clemens, Hurst, Seaver and Boyd. Nipper was a mediocre pitcher. The Red Sox just had bad luck. Greatest team of 1960s 1967 St. Louis Cardinals. Greatest team of 1970s. 1975 Big Red Machine, best team of 1980s. 1986 Mets. Just got bad luck. Thankfully it turned around now. This Diaz injury will cost the Mets. A lot of betters on DraftKings mad. It is what is is.

We'll never know, I guess, but I've never bought into the (popular) narrative that a healthy Seaver would have the made the difference. (And who know? Maybe they lose the ALCS if he'd gotten a start.)

Ok give you that, but Tom Terrific in Game three would
have closed it. Injuries, just like Teddy Ball Game hurt his shoulder in a exhibition game before 1946 World Series.
Bringing back to my point if 86 Red Sox had Tom Seaver they would have won.

I don't know, but they were down 3 games to 1. I don't think that happens with Seaver.
Or maybe, for example, he has an off night and gets shelled in game 3 and Donnie Moore doesn't need to go two innings (and therefore is fresher in Game 5 and doesn't blow it). You never know.
