Whatever happened to Kris Dunn? (the 2016 redraft)

Sabonis has been amazing this year, shooting FG at about 70%. I can see him at 2. Hield at 4 seemed a bit high at first, but he's turned a corner this year, so fine. I'd get Brogdon at least a few slots higher and drop LeVert. Murray's shooting has slipped this year, so I'd think about dropping him too. And, agreed, right now Brown may be at #9 or #10 in a redraft. I don't see Maker in the top 10.

Bump!

Big month for Kris Dunn in his return to the NBA after all his injuries. Utah signed him for the remainder of the year after his second 10-day contract expired.

In 9 games off the bench, Dunn has posted an 11.8/4.8/4.8/1.6 in 22 mpg. Good to see.

Weird draft: picks 4-26 yield only one all-star (Sabonis). But then, picks 27-36 yield three— including Malcolm Brogdan, the first 2nd round selection in 50+ years to win rookie of the year.

Hadn't been paying attention, but this is good to read, obviously for you and the PC guys around here like me and a bunch of others.

It's interesting looking back on this to see how some players have really fallen (Ben Simmons) and others have bubbled up to being about where you would have expected (Jaylen Brown).

I think a few years after Giannis was drafted, there was a wave of "Let's take some really raw big guy with limited basketball experience" picks. That in part explains players like Maker and Chriss going so early when there was little to suggest they were lottery talents. Bender is kind of a different story, but also follows a wave of lanky European players with limited playing experience at the highest level failing to make it. The foreign players in this draft were TERRIBLE and really tanked things in the first round. Yabu, Papagiannis, Ante Zizic, etc. Zubac in the second round was very good.

Simmons is such a bizarre story, nobody could have seen what would happen with his career.

Brown, Ingram, Siakam and Sabonis have turned into excellent NBA players. Jamaal Murray probably has the best-case-scenario for his career, minus the injuries, given what he was coming out of college. Dejounte Murray I've always found a little overrated but was obviously a great pick. Hield is exactly what people expected to him to be; an elite shooter in a league that values that highly. Poeltl is a very good player. Brogdan is one of the best draft picks in recent NBA history. Malik Beasley (19), Caris LaVert (20), Zubac (32) and Georges Niang (50) all greatly outperformed their draft position.

Kind of interesting to note that this draft was filled with highly touted big men recruits from high school that never did anything in the NBA. Skal Labissiere (ranked #2 behind Simmons coming out of HS), Cheick Diallo (#6), Diamond Stone (#7), Henry Ellenson (#9) and Stephen Zimmerman (#10) all didn't do anything in the NBA. You could throw in Ivan Rabb (#5) who was in the draft the following year as well.

Bump!

It looked like Kris found a home last spring but you never know how real those end of seasons games are but he's having an excellent camp with Hardy saying Dunn could be his opening night PG. Seems like he's figuring out how to put the ball in the basket with a 4-4 and 7-7 shooting nights in their first 4 games.

I still can't believe he signed for so cheap. Hopefully he can have a very good season. 30 million for a career is obviously more than enough for a family, but a good year could get him 3/20 for his 30+ year seasons?

Zach Lowe called him the most destructive defensive force in the NBA (at full throttle).

Not next year it won't he'll need two seasons before he can think about getting paid. I was blown away that his agent agreed to a 2nd year team option....like totally floored. It was discussed at the time and I was pretty much on an island which I didn't understand either. It's an absolute garbage deal for Kris.

He was on a rest of season deal with a non-guaranteed 2023-24, they just guaranteed it, he's a FA next year.

also he's unlikely to get paid because unless he continues to have wild outlier shooting from his career norms he's a fringe rotation player at best... there is a reason he had no offers last year until the Jazz gave him a shot, he was 28 with 6 years of being not an NBA rotation player under his belt. He's playing to stay in the league not for some hypothetical big contract at 30.

Honest question.... if Kris Dunn went to like New Mexico state nobody on this board would ever talk about him right? The idea that a late 20s guy who was playing out 10 days, and G-league was making a mistake by signing a standard ROS deal with a non-guaranteed year is crazy... dude was on the fast track to a job selling insurance or Kias, he didn't hit a 3pt hot streak and he's competing for the starting spot on the Capitol City Gogo again.
