This is a bizarro free agency. I wonder what the record is for fewest $$ spent on non-QB "skill position" players. I think we have had a couple blocking TEs signed and a FB or two with zero RBs, WRs, or bigger name TEs signed thus far.

Teams just don't let top tier receivers reach free agency, if you want one you either draft them or trade for them.

Schefty says the Jesters are trying to land Lazard. I would assume this would be also be tied to the QB as a friend of Aaron move.

The Jets are in a lot of ways in a very similar situation as the Bucs were going into 2020, and a whole lot of people talked about how that team was an absolute wagon that any top 10 QB could have driven to a Super Bowl. Well, I guess these will be the expectations now.

Thanks, that’s what I didn’t know if they were accounting for properly. Call it a million, still a lot especially when the location (Miami) is still good. High tax states and a real disadvantage.
What does a UK or German game get counted as?

Rodgers is taking the same WR he has seemingly been unsatisfied with to his new place?
Rodgers is very weird because he loves some guys that are unproductive. Dude wants to play with the corpse of Randall Cobb, Jake Kumerow, Mercedes Lewis and Allen Lazard. At least Brady's binkies actually could ball.

Thanks for catching the wide open TD in the AFCCG in 2018 but I’m otherwise all set on Dorsett.
I don't get it. He had 20 catches last year, 7 in 2021 (for three different teams!), and none in 2020 because he didn't play. He averaged about 20 catches a year for the five seasons that he played before that (the three most recent of which were with NE). And now he's on the wrong side of 30. Yuck.

I thought he sort of openly didn’t like Lazard, though. Or at least was critical of him. I mean, if you’re the Jets, you do whatever he wants at this point, but I didn’t think Lazard was really a “Rodgers Guy.”

I wonder if Rodgers appreciates how different day to day life will be in NJ. In Green Bay, he’s a living legend.

He can pop into Roundys for a gallon of milk & a 7 year old boy will shyly approach him in a Rodgers jersey asking for an autograph.

If throws 2 picks against Miami, he’s gonna have 7 year olds yelling at him at stop lights, “what the fuck the matter with you? You fucking suck Rodgers!”

Ed the Fireman has his bullhorn warmed up. This is not a forgiving audience, and he's a prickly guy by all reports.

He’s about to go from big fish in a small pond to just another millionaire in a city of billionaires. There are literally millions of people in NYC who don’t give a flying eff about football and wouldn’t recognize him from Adam. I for one can’t wait for the TikTok video of him pulling out “do you know who I am?” At some exclusive club or restaurant, and the inevitable meltdown that follows.

So, this is actually possible, but I think in general everyone here is underrating how QB hungry Jets fans are. Like, they yearn for Chad Pennington. Jets fans aren't turning on Rodgers quickly. He's actually going get the benefit of the doubt as long as he's not absolutely atrocious. From both fans and the local media, at least for the football side of things.

Yeah but how many people who are even football fans in the city are fans of the Jets? Most of the football fans I knew in the city were Giants fans or fans of whatever city they came from. I didn’t know many Jets fans in the five boroughs, but Penn station was always a madhouse on Jets home game days from all the fans taking a train in from Long Island and waiting for the train to the Meadowlands.

Which is not to say there aren’t Jets fans in the city, but the sheer tide of either fans who don’t like him or people who just don’t care about sports in general will be a serious bruise to his ego.

I don't know. I don't think Rodgers is going to be out and about in NYC looking for validation.

If Rodgers is league average his leash will be super long unless the Jets are an absolute wagon and his play is what hampers their Super Bowl hopes, which I think is the least likely scenario. If he sucks the team will also suck and the conversation will turn to how the Jets are such a mess they broke Aaron Rodgers. If he's moderately good people will be ecstatic considering they haven't watched above average QB play in about 20 years.

So the guy who guest hosted Jeopardy and is now on Season 2 of “Look at me! Look at me! Football Bachelor” isn’t a fame and attention whore? Good to know.

Both of those examples are controlled environments. It's not even close to being out and about in NYC

The NY response to Rodgers will be hysterical; it will be over the top either way and have very little to do with how Rodgers actually plays but instead be totally driven by team results. Freaking Mark Sanchez was the toast of the town after two years.

If the Jets are 2-0 with two 14-13 wins the back page of the sports pages will be something like FIRST CLASS--RODGER PILOTS JETS TO ANOTHER WIN and if the Jets are 0-2 with two 14-13 losses the back pages will say "HALL OF FAME LOSER" and have Rodgers with a dunce cap. And he gets sarcastic or whatever in press conferences after games, that will get played ad nauseam.

Which is my point. Those were both examples in which he had some level of control over his image and the narrative. When he doesn’t have control and when he’s facing any sort of pushback, we’ve seen he doesn’t handle it that well. How do you think he’ll react when the 22 year old non-binary design student from Pratt working the door at Club Schmuck tells him “sorry, we’re full right now”?

I’ve said my piece. Intelligent people of good faith are certainly free to disagree. I’m just basing this on what I’ve seen of Aaron Rodgers and 15 years living in Manhattan. And most of you are correct, assuming he plays reasonably well, the Jets fan base will be ecstatic.

I love that you guys think Rodgers is gonna pop into a bodega for milk and get yelled at. His assistant buys his milk. He's obscenely rich and famous, much like Brady his life is carefully managed.

They won't because his manager will get him a VIP table ahead of time, he's not standing in line like a daytrader looking to impress a model with his bottle service and blow.

On Dorsett - something that became incredibly obvious in 2019 is that he only runs 1 or 2 routes. It doesn't matter what the play calls for, or what the quarterback wants, or where the defenders are, he's running a post or a streak, and that's it. Which is fine if that's what your offense wants and has other players that can take the coverage away.

Brady, perhaps the most reviled player by Jets fans, managed to live in NYC just fine. People are being fucking ridiculous.

So, to be clear, are we back to snarkily scoffing at the rest of the League for making dumb FA signings while we sitback and wait to pounce on great values?

It was more fun in the moment signing the Agholors, Smiths, and Henrys.

I work in Midtown and the Jets fans in my office are absolutely fired up right now. It’s going to take a complete shitshow to undo that, I think.

Someone please refresh my memory, we don't typically hear about Pats FA signings until (1) the FA window opens and (2) they've actually happened, right?

BTW, if the Jets really sign Lazard (and Cobb), Corey Davis is almost certainly getting traded or cut (saves them $10.5M), could be an interesting dart throw if he gets cut.

There are some amazing fans here that's for sure. I mentioned it earlier but a reasonable smart (about things other than football) and very well informed Giants fan in my office believes in his heart of hearts that Eli Manning is the greatest QB in NFL history, had a better career than Peyton, and would have had more rings that Brady if he had even an average GM

EDIT: Also the pro athletes do just fine in NYC and while possibly Rodgers might have trouble getting reservations at some cantonese-flemish supper club in bushwick, he'll almost certainly get star treatment anywhere he'd want to go.

SECOND EDIT: I'd agree with the idea that NYC doesn't bend over backwards for "non hall of fame" athletes. JJ Reddick goes to my neighborhood Italian place and he waits for a table the same as everybody else; my hoops-crazy neighbor saw Mikail Bridges waiting outside for Ramen at our local ramen spot same as everybody else. Some random defensive back is going to be a god in Green Bay and is really just not a big deal here. But if you're so good at football that you get to host jeopardy? Yeah life won't be bad.

It will be funny when Rodgers brings his gang of Lazard and Cobb to NYJ only to retire after the season after a 1st rd playoff loss leaving them with a metric ton of dead cap hits at the same time Wilson, Sauce and Williams all want new contracts. That will be the most Jets thing ever.

Lol, I’ve known Giants fans with similar convictions, and as someone astutely pointed out Jets fans’ undying love for Chad Pennington. I used to work with a good guy who was a huge Jets fan and one day three or four years ago I made an offhand joke about Pennington being a bust. He lost his shit on me and insisted that if not for the injury Pennington would have been better than Brady.

Edit: spelling

Yes yes, and the Commanders should be the Maryland Commanders.

49ers should be Santa Clara 49ers. Can you draft a petition for geographic truth? I will happily sign.

I think this is exactly right. If Pol Pot could throw an 18-yard out from the far hashmarks, Jet fans would be ok with him even if he wore #12.
