So they’re using Manfred Man in the WBC too? Ugggh
No.
The MLB adopted a variation of the WBSC (the FIFA of baseball) rule that has been in place since the mid 2000s. Pretty much every league - at youth, amateur, college, semi-pro - levels everywhere outside the US had been using it for over 10 years before it came to the MLB.
It was even used in the Olympics in 2008. https://www.wbsc.org/en/news/wbsc-inspired-extra-inning-rule-made-impact-on-mlb-2020-season

Great Britain already has scored 3 over Canada's Cal Quantrill in the first!
Edit: Don't y'all who have criticized GB's unis understand that there is almost no money behind the team and they can't afford the niceties of other teams?

How does one watch FS2?
For all the channels, foxsports.com will give you a one hour free preview. When it expires, you can open a private/incognito window and do it again. When that runs out, close the incongnito window, open a new one, and start over.

Works for me, at least.

Thanks! I have Directv but could not figure out how to watch the earlier games.

Great Britain is wearing Nike jerseys. It's not a matter of money, it's simple aesthetics. They didn't select Helvetica or Arial because they can't afford a nicer font.

I should be rooting for Canada with Cal Quantrill and Bo Naylor on their roster, but I can't support a team that plays Rush between innings.

5-3
1-1
4-1
6-3

That is the score of each inning so far, 16-8 Canada through 4.

15 hits and 11 walks for Canada through 4, they should have even more than 16.

17-8 through 5, Canada left the bases loaded again and have stranded 12.

Matt Brash puts us all out of our misery, 18-8 final, mercy rule invoked after 6 1/2 innings.

It's sad, the naked humiliation of the failed pitcher. He's removed in the second inning without getting an out.
Edit: his replacement, Cruz, got an out but then gave up a three-run homer to Salvador Perez. 7-0 Venezuela.

@YTF , you know I love Youk, so I'm prejudiced, but the guys in the booth showed him and seemed to think that his doctrine of patience was evidenced in the game. I thought so, but one never knows...

You would think for a tournament being held mostly within the United States they would keep the home team (USA) out of the late night 9/10pm window… yeah yeah team USA is out on the west coast. Whatever. Seems like shitty planning.

USA getting undone here in the third on a bunch of soft bleeders and bloopers and “could have made the play but didn’t”s.

How is the US pitching staff so bad? Really uninspiring roster considering that we pulled many of the top hitters.

Way more chance of a pitcher ramping up too fast and getting hurt. Hitters don’t face the same risk.
True but plenty of other elite guys are playing for other teams. Don’t think this tournament means as much to US players as it does for other countries.

Australia holds off the Czech Republic to advance second in group B. I think they get Cuba in the quarterfinals, whoever draws that winner is lucky.

That's correct. It's the first time Australia has advanced out of Pool play and the end, for now, of the magical ride for Czech Republic Baseball.

Wednesday night (Tokyo time) is Australia @ Cuba, Thursday night is Italy @ Japan. I was hoping to see Xander & Co again, but I'll be at both anyway.

And there it is. Grand slam in the top of the 5th to make it 22-2. Still only one out and the mercy rule doesn't kick in until after five full innings.

A brief note about Roki Sasaki's start vs the Czechs on Saturday.

Saturday was 3/11, the 12th anniversary of the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. Sasaki was 9 in 2011, and lost his grandparents and his father in the disaster. Now the eyes of the entire country are on him on this day of days. I just cannot imagine what he was dealing with as he took the mound. And he was mostly nails, 3.2 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 8 K:

He did unfortunately drill a Czech player, Willie Escala, in the knee with a 101mph fastball. Escala was on the ground for a while, and clearly in a lot of pain, but he shook it off (brief thread if you click through):

This morning when the Czech team was leaving their hotel to head to their noon game against Australia, they found Sasaki waiting at the hotel. He brought Escala two big bags of Lotte candy and snacks to apologize (Sasaki's NPB team being the Chiba Lotte Marines.)

The Czech team is a great story. Sasaki is a great story. I can't get enough of either. Class acts.

I heard that the U.S. players were saying that after hitting very very slow pitches from GB, it was hard to adjust to fast balls. But, I gotta say, watching the game now on mlbn, they just got beat. If Betts and Trout & Co are going to play like that, they shouldn't be playing. It wasn't only the superior Mexican pitching. Players of that caliber ought to do better.

I got curious about Joey Meneses and found this, among many other things:
He signed a minor-league deal with the Boston Red Sox in 2020, but COVID-19 canceled the season. He stuck around for another year, was promoted to Triple-A Worcester, but never got a call-up to the Red Sox.
Good article about this long-time minor leaguer: https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/columnist/bob-nightengale/2023/03/13/joey-meneses-hero-home-runs-mexico-beat-usa-wbc/11463661002/

We also had another infielder named Heiker Meneses in the minors, but I think he is Venezuelan? I wonder if there's any relation.
