Hey who was the big Northwestern guy in here from over a decade ago? Nice win over #1 Purdue, even though I’m not buying that Purdue team, for a school that simply does not go in and beat #1’s historically! Somewhere in Boulder, CO you’ll find Evan Eschmeyer smiling.

That was me! :) Or rather, my son attended NU and graduated in 2021. He's absolutely fired up and was in attendance (travelled from Charlotte, NC to Evanston for the game with a couple of his close friends). The team is overachieving this year, as they often cannot throw the ball in the ocean, but their defense is extremely good. Boo Bouie is having a first team Big-Ten year and Chase Audige is a talented athlete, probably will make the Big 10 first team defense who has spurts of offensive greatness sandwiched with a bunch of dumbass mistakes (NU's version of Jaylen Brown circa 2018 - <ducking>). The rest of the players are nice cogs in a machine, but they can all play defense.

Well, second big NU guy here as well (my son graduated in 2018). I think I posted here a few times back the last (and only) time NU made it to the tournament. My son went to the Vandy game out in SLC that they won, while we went to the NU bar in Cambridge to watch the game. Kind of wild being packed into a bar with a bunch of juiced-up 20-somethings.

Tonight they beat #14 Indy on a last minute floater of a shot, 64-62, after surviving a hellacious comeback by the Hoosiers, so it's pretty much a lock they make the tournament again. Good times in Evanston.

Purdue appears to be collapsing. I went to the game at Maryland last night and they completely fell apart in the second half.

Eh, we'll see. These kinds of February swoons happen to elite teams sometimes. It's the dog days before March Madness. But they have lost 3 of 4, so something to keep an eye on. Could be a blip on the radar, could be the start of a season ending freefall.

Yeah, collapsing may be overly harsh, but they just seemed completely incapable of stopping Maryland or generating any consistent offense for most of the second half.

I either posted somewhere here or Tweeted last week about Purdue being the face of all fades come March. Their backcourt is Mid-American Conference level is the phrase I used. Classic example of a team peaking early for one, but you need great guard play in the tournament and they will be a high seed yet likely having an inferior backcourt in most of their tournament games. Edey is a great college player but that team isn’t going anywhere deep.

Edit: It was Twitter, two Purdue Tweets beginning on 1/29.

There aren't any very good teams. Kansas, UCLA and Houston have talent, but they're not overly great by any stretch. I prob can't recall a time when CBB had such an overall poor product as we have right now.

I imagine the covid scholarship rules, portal, etc all play a significant part of that.

What Bar is this? I'd definitely go for their first round game this year (my son plans to travel to the venue of the first weekend of games to watch NU)

That bar has apparently changed ownership and is no longer an NU place. My son tells me the new place is Hops N Scotch in Brookline

NU wire to wire beatdown of Iowa last night. I still think the team is overachieving and their success tenuous, but 5 straight wins (@ Wisc., @ OSU, Purdue (#1 at the time), Indiana (#17 at the time) and a 20-7 Iowa team), they are now alone in 2nd place in the Big Ten. What a great surprise season.

Yeah, my son and his girlfriend were in attendance and we watched on BTN. Quite a beatdown. The D, as has been the case most of this year, was really good and forced a lot of bad looks for Iowa. Good contributions from multiple players even though Chase Audige was out for large swaths of the game in foul trouble. Also, very glad they held that PITA Rebraca to minimal contributions--he killed us last time at Iowa. Just a really fun game to watch if you're an NU fan.

If nothing else, they should be in the top 25 when the new polls come out at noon

You don’t see many HC have 5 consecutive losing seasons anymore as they are typically long gone by then……but talk about a coach having a contract year! Chris Freakin Collins!

Right? He's been pretty terrible, to be honest. His recruiting isn't bad, but his teams have really not performed very well and a lot of it, in my view, is due to his substandard in-game coaching decisions. Helps to have 2 seniors in the backcourt with a lot of experience (Bouie and Audige) who have really stepped up this year. Their team defense has been absolutely phenomenal.

Nate Oats is a fool

"Alabama forward Brandon Miller provided then teammate Miles with the weapon used in the killing.

“We knew about that,” Oats said of the allegations during a news conference. “Can’t control everything everybody does outside of practice. Nobody knew that was going to happen. College kids are out, Brandon hasn’t been in any type of trouble nor is he in any type of trouble in this case. Wrong spot at the wrong time.” "

Hey, just because a buddy gets into a beef at the club I dropped him off at and asks me to bring him my gun, it's just bad luck he shoots someone right?

Not a lawyer but it seems like an odd story just overall. Is it possible for Miller to believe that his friend would never shoot someone except in justified self-defense and also think that if said friend asks for their gun back, they might anticipate a need for self-defense? What's the legal or moral obligation to assume bad faith on the part of his friend or, indeed, to forbid his friend from applying his own judgment on what is necessary for his own safety?

The fact it wound up being not such a case does not prove the opposite.

Far as I know, Miller collaborated and cooperated (as far as it's known, do think that's subject to change) with authorities with proper details. Oats seems like he may have rushed into a statement, but from what's out there, I really don't see Miller as reasonably culpable.

This is where I'm at, as it pertains to Miller, in an at-large sense. Again, subject to change, but I can only know what's out there.

The craziest thing here is that Miller will probably not face any legal repercussions, enter the draft and be a lottery pick……while Oats is the one in trouble for his handling of the situation to the press. Bizarro

Miller is certainly the most culpable. The DA has already said they can’t find anything to charge him with. I guess my standards were slightly higher for the adult in charge of these kids. But I shouldn’t be surprised by any coach these days. At least Oats could say they were disappointed Miller put himself in that position and he had no idea what Miles was going to do. It would be a lie of course but at least pretend to show some remorse to the victim and situation.

It’s surprising that in Alabama, a 19-year old can apparently throw a loaded gun in his car and drive it over to its owner, who was hanging out on the street outside a nightclub at 2am, without violating any laws. But apparently that’s the case. I could go either way on whether Miller should’ve been thrown off the team.

Regardless of how that was handled, though, Oats has to do better. It’s not like a reporter interrupted him at dinner with his kids and asked for comment — it was a freaking press conference! And it’s a question he should have known was coming for weeks. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anyone handle a situation like this worse than Otis did. I’ll be fine with it if it costs him his job.

I understand that todays news cycle is focused on Oats misleading the public to protect his star, Miller. (And there’s still the whole issue about Miller’s car possibly blocking in the target’s car that will certainly be part of the case moving forward - Miller will be publicly and legally tied into the case all the way to its conclusion.)

But this coach also has a player now charged with capital murder who beckoned a frosh teammate to bring him a gun. There’s something rotten in that program and it appears the only reason Oats isn’t already suspended and the university investigating the team is that they are Final Four contenders.

Edit: Put another way, the university is ok with Oats sitting down with recruits and their families and saying things like. “We’ll make sure your son gets a good education, is looked after, stays safe, matures into a man”?

Wow, unless Miller had some other issue w/the law, nothing I can see that says he couldn't "come heavy". https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory/alabama-concealed-guns-permit-2023-95984576

Not what I was expecting to learn.
The bolded strikes me a a fairy bizarre framing of the issue.

No one is questioning Miller’s right to carry a concealed weapon - “come heavy” in your words. People are questioning the coach’s response to the fact that Miller provided a weapon to a teammate who is now accused of using that weapon in a capital murder case.

That the police/DA don’t think they can charge him for that is immaterial to me, in the sense that I don’t have their responsibility to prove the guilt of a star player on one of the highest-ranked college teams to a jury of 12 fans.

To me, Miller looks like nothing more (or less) than an accomplice to homicide. Oats’ failure to take any action against him - or even to properly frame the issue besides trivializing the death of a young woman - is something opposing coaches should mention every single time they talk to recruits in the future.

The starting lineup for Southern Miss last night was 22.6 years old. The OKC Thunder recently had a starting lineup with an average age of 22.0.

Just for fun: New Hampshire's Keene State College (my employers) currently have the #5 ranked team in all of Division III. They ended the regular season 24-1, a mid-season non-conference 4 point loss to Middlebury the only cloud on their record.

They had a bye in the Little East Conference quarter finals, but have a semi-final match tonight at 6 versus Eastern Connecticut.

They really are a fun team to watch. If you are around, you all might enjoy it. Here's the link:

Well this sure as shit is a horrible look:

For those who can't see the Twitter embed, during starting lineup intros today, one of Brandon Miller's teammates did a mock pat-down on him as he was introduced. Sure looks like the team is not taking the situation seriously...

It sounds like it might be a thing they've been doing during most of the season? But god damn, you have got to know you can't keep doing that.

Great finish in New Mexico with the Lobos and Aztecs going back and forth with final minute shot making prior to SDSt hitting the game winning 3 at the buzzer.

A reminder of Pete Maravich's amazing-ness. His NCAA total points record -- 3667 -- is about to go down. (Antoine Davis of Detroit Mercy).
No knock on Davis...but....
Davis has scored 3,642 points in 142 games while it took Maravich just 83 to get 3,667 during three seasons for the Tigers when he was known as much for a shaggy haircut and droopy socks as his on-court wizardry.
Unlike Davis, who was granted a fifth year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Maravich didn't play as a freshman — it wasn't allowed at the time — and there was also no 3-point line or shot clock, placing a premium on every possession.
It's mind-boggling to consider that Maravich, who died in 1988 at age 40 after suffering a heart attack while playing in a pickup game, averaged 44.2 points without taking or making a single 3-pointer.
Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis is about to break Pete Maravich’s 53-year-old NCAA scoring record - The Boston Globe

He didn't do it unless some ferkatka post season tournament takes teams w/losing records.
The College Basketball Invitational (which I had never heard of before) does exactly that. I took a look at their brackets for the past few years and there have been several sub-500 teams invited. So I wouldn't be surprised if Detroit Mercy got an invite, especially with the additional attention Davis' participation would probably bring - for one game at least.

The had 1 win in 2019-2020, 5 in 2020-2021 and 13 last season. Amazing story.

The Big East tournament is off to an absolutely electric start with DePaul coming back in the final minute to beat Seton Hall. The final play of the game was a DePaul block at the rim that was initially ruled a goaltend, a close call but looks like they got it right. It's gonna be a fun weekend.

Horrible loss for Seton Hall. Good win for the Johnnies but they have to play 1 seed Marquette at a high noon and face the BE coach and player of the year.

UConn vs Providence should be a fun battle right after.
