That sounds more like road rage than what you think of as a drive by.

Shooting at people is considered shitty thing for people to do, and that should include former NBA players as well. No need to defend Kemp here.

Fair, but if both options end with someone shot I don't think that person would enjoy us arguing the minute differences
Neato. Are you worried that they’re reading this thread, such that a greater degree of detail and discussion about specifics is beyond the pale?

I know that if Terry Cummings hits me with a tire iron, I'm whipping out my phone to login here and get a ruling on the nature of the assault before I even hit the ground.

Not to mention, the video shows it wasn't even a drive by. This new explanation may prove to be BS, but it appears to match what we see in the video slightly better than the police department's original description.

Point taken, and I admit to not responding in the best head space aided by drinks with friends. I just think anyone willing to shoot at another person that isn’t 100% in blatant self defense doesn’t deserve to have a discussion “well it’s not as bad if they planned it” talk.

Not to beat this drum forever, but this has been bothering me. The headline in the OP article refers to it as a (and I quote) "drive by shooting."

@worm0082 rightly pointed out that the article made it sound more like a road rage incident, based on his understanding of how the terms "drive-by shooting" and "road rage" are generally applied (an understanding I share. Your mileage may vary).

At no point was anyone in this thread defending either type of crime in general, nor Shawn Kemp specifically. There's no "doesn't deserve" component to ANY of this, except that which you introduced.

However, since you then DID introduce it, the inevitable legal ramifications conversation began, a conversation that not only never would have happened: "Um do you want us to debate what's better? " had you not posted, but one that - again - never featured a single post defending the behavior.

So while I appreciate the step-back, I still think you're missing the point on how much you derailed this thread, in the process nearly stopping all of the great jokes from being posted. And THAT would have really sucked.

No worries. I don’t know that people were trying to minimize here, rather than simply being more precise. I may have missed something, and not a big deal, either way.

Sean Kemp and the Sonics played a preseason game here. It was one of the most childish displays I had ever seen from a basketball player at any level.
I was able to get courtrside, watch the pregame shoot etc. Kemp satin the stands for the shoot and when assistant coaches asked if he was hurt he said he wasn't. Karl seemed to tell the assistants to leave Kemp alone. In pregame warmup he was floating around half speed. Some kids on the baseline begged him to dunk in warmup and he dropped some f-bombs then didn't dunk even once in the warmup. A few times he went high above the rim then just kept the ball in his hand until he landed, not dunking. People booed a bit and he sat down. In the game Motumbo blocked him and the crowd cheered and he yelled "I don't care!" then argued with Karl who subbed him out. Karl just turned his back, and Kemp tried to get after him, but Payton and others intervened. This wasn't injured fat Kemp this was at his peak Kemp. Guys from the local news filmed it all and told me later some NBA people told them not to broadcast anything or the Raptors would move their exhibition the next year to another city.

There was nothing else to report at that point. There were reports of a shooting and people were arrested. That's what happens. Kemp's lawyer thanked the police for how they handled things.
I'm not going to give the Tacoma Police Department any breaks.

They have a history of lying.

From the Manny Ellis murder to the fact that a local white man - who is buddies with the cops and bailed out the three cops who killed Manny Ellis - did the same thing as Kemp, but didn't get arrested, tells me that they don't deserve the benefit of doubt in these types of situations.

They also called it a drive-by when that comes with heavy connotations that don't seem to be clear in this case.

From your own link, there were officers present at that other shooting, right?

Story still sounds weird.

He tracked his iPhone then took a gun with him and went to retrieve it? Guy shoots at him and he returns fire?

It sounds a bit weird because there's video footage of him standing in the wide open taking a few steps toward his target and firing a shot. If he did get shot at first then he has absolute balls of steel because standing in the wide open after you've been shot at seems legitimately crazy.

Fair enough, I get you.

I was speaking more to the news report--of course they are "parroting" the police report, because that was the only info out there that early in the story.

Has that been confirmed as the Kemp shooting?

That sounds like the story. What is weird about it?
I don't know. I don't live his life but if someone broke into my car and stole my phone I'd have the cops go get it. I wouldn't grab a gun and go meet them.

Not to exonerate Kemp, and I haven't dug into this much at all, but tens of millions of people live in zip codes where the cops do not respond to stolen cell phone calls very quickly if at all.

Yeah, police in large cities especially don't. My wife's phone was stolen in Paris, we tracked it to an apartment complex 35 mins outside the city. Cops knew exactly where we were talking about and there was a cell phone ring broken up in the same place a few months ago. They told us her phone would end up in Morocco within a week. Guess where it was a week later, and still is today? Casablanca.

Sorry about the phone! Would love to visit Casablanca. Would be weird if my phone crossed one of my bucket list destinations before I did though.

You must have been shocked- shocked- to find petty larceny was going on there.
