The final score reminds me of the Pats ekeing out that 2011 AFCCG on the Cundiff shank. Then they couldn't handle the Giants in an ugly Super Bowl, by a hair, with Gronk really messed up etc.

I can see this Super Bowl being that type of ugly.

Refs swallowed their whistles and the 76ers choked?
Many observers call the '81 ECF the greatest non finals series in NBA history.
It's hard not to choke when the refs allow the other team to put their hands around your neck and choke you without calling a foul. What LeBron was complaining about the other night was pretty much the whole fourth quarter of that game.

Philly should be able to run on KC, and the Chiefs are banged up at receiver against the best defense in the league. Mahomes will see a similar pass rush that he saw in the Tampa Super Bowl, and we know how that went for him.

This Super Bowl is going to be played, some shit team is going to win, and we (Pats fans anyway) are going to forget about it as soon as it's over and focus on the spring training, the B's and C's playoff runs, and the NFL draft.

No way. His career isn't close to as long as it needs to be.

BUT.....unless something crazy happens, he absolutely, positively will be there.

I think he is. I mean, his talent level, to me, is clearly # 1, so he's just chasing time at this point, and the trophies will eventually get there. And he doesn't need 7 rings or 10 appearances to be the GOAT. This is coming from an absolutely massive Brady homer who roots for him no matter where he is. I just think the stars are aligned here unless something catastrophic happens. And it kills me even more to say it because the Chiefs fanbase is absolute trash, their message board alone is one of the worst in all of sports, just pure human garbage that gets rewarded with his play.

I think that's crazy. Hurts was unimpressive to me despite the win, he still seems off.
I agree. He didn’t have much gas on his throws and looked tentative. At the same time, his ability to escape may neutralize the pass rush. Should be a good game. Eagles CBs will swallow KCs JV WR corps. But Mahomes will do Mahomes things.

I'm not rooting for the Eagles, but they have been the best team for most of the season, seem to have Hurts healthy again (we'll see about Lane Johnson), and have won their two playoff games by a combined score of 69-14. Their profile is closer to the types of NFC teams from the 80s who would destroy their AFC opponents when they got to the Super Bowl. I would not be surprised if they stomp the Chiefs the way the Bucs did two years ago.

We’ll see how Mahomes’ ankle looks in 2 weeks. It needs to be much better or you could have SB42 moment for him where the DL just owns the game.

He might not need 7, but he needs...at least 4. Because Montana is still there.

The numbers in this era of passing distort things, and I wish there was some sort of passer rating + stat kind of like ops+ or era+ that takes into account the era in which these guys played. If he doesn't get this one this year, suddenly he's 1-2 in Super Bowls and it's another season where he doesn't get his second. But at 2-1, he's on a really good track to get to 4 or 5.

Again though, let's see how things shake out. He won't have Kelce forever, and his contract will eat up far more of the salary cap at some point, and at some point Reid will retire and he's been amazing for the Chiefs. Lots of stuff can happen here to get in the way of crowning Mahomes the GOAT.

The Eagles were #1 in the NFL in getting pressure on the QB, which probably will be a major problem for Mahomes if he's still gimpy.

I’m sure KC will fly him to Europe to get some kind of unicorn blood injection into his ankle and he’ll be tip top for the SB. There’s no way he wasn’t on some crazy meds for this game.

Honestly I don't think the NFL minds that the officials are by and large terrible, nor do I think they're going to do anything about it. Controversy and keeping themselves in the news are good for the business of The Shield.
It is HUMANS making split second judgement calls. They are going to get some wrong. And, over the course of the season, it all evens out. Every team gets screwed at some point. I think teams should be allowed one or two challenges a game that can be used to challenge any call on the field. Any call. That would eliminate the game changing missed call.

76ers were up 3-1 in that series and lost in 7. It was the closest and maybe most physical and best 7 game series I've seen in 60+ years. And you have a problem with the last few minutes of a 2 pt back and forth 7th game?

It was a fucking war between 2 very physical teams . It was awesome.
And I understand ymmv.

Agreed. KC couldn’t run the ball at all today. Eagles DL has been superb all year. Mahomes will make plays but he’ll need to be really on to win this, I think. Philly’s D is a wagon right now.

Except they literally botched a replay call on the 3rd down stretch-the-ball out review. Of course they’ll get some wrong, but they still get stuff wrong when they have the means to correct it. Officiating in the NFL is abysmal.

Hah, after the 3rd down retry debacle, I totally forgot about this. That was a four point swing. Or 7 if the Chiefs go for it on 4th down and get stuffed.

You told someone on this board to STF up... it's not like it was some kind of nuanced argument that you were making
Oh come on. That wasn’t personal, just a general statement about relexively blaming the refs. Yes, I’m a Sox fan but a Chiefs fan too. The Patriots, Brady, Belichik, and the entire organization were and are to be lauded for a two-decade run of setting the standard for greatness. But when another team begins to emulate that, it is not legitimate because of the refs, not enough rings as Brady, etc etc etc. When someone (like me) complained that the refs were the reason that Brady, Gronkowski, and the others were winning games, they were correctly rejected on this board.

Yep, for sure. He's the only guy with a chance to get near Brady.
And if he does, Tom has the tiebreaker head to head. Mahomes would need another finger’s worth of rings to get close and even then Tom out playing him in a super bowl ends the discussion.

What is it that some people say, a meteor hitting the stadium? Wait, where is the SB ? Arizona? No problem.
I was just wondering what's one degree short of the meteor strike. I have no love for the Eagles, and absolutely loathe the Chiefs and their fans, but a meteor strike would screw up things for the rest of us humans on Earth for a long time. I'd like to see a flock of diarrheic pigeons deciding to swarm in Arizona and continually fly over the stadium just before kickoff.

Would you let coaches challenge any call/non-call or allow review of entire plays? The Mahomes run at the end of the game, for instance, may have had multiple holding penalties. Does the coach have to identify one or should the refs look at the whole thing and see if there were any infractions? It gets tricky. The pass interference reviews kind of sucked in my opinion.

Tiebreaker twice. Once in the AFCCG (at KC no less) and once in the SB.

The Sixers were called for 27 fouls to the Celtics 18...hmmm.

The refs were in the bag because the NBA wanted to get their new golden boy into the NBA Finals.

The Belichick take of making everything reviewable I am all for, but they will never ever make offensive holding reviewable. They ran 200 miles an hour from making DPI/OPI reviewable after a one season experiment, and the number of possible holding calls/non calls pretty significantly outpaced all of the possible PI calls in a given game. The NFL wants no part of legislating it, I expect.

Honestly, stfu with the refs. Are other team’s wins allowable in PatriotWorld, or is it only KC that is illegitimate? The Chiefs won with practice squad receivers. But Kelce offended the Queen in her casket with his post-game comments. Please.
You got it. Only Patriots wins count and everyone here knows this. The Chiefs suck and have an unlikeable team and fanbase and thus all of their success is null and void.

Another obstacle Mahomes might face chasing Brady. Brady had BB for 20 years. Andy Reid is 64. Mahomes will likely end up playing a good chunk of his 30’s under a different coach, or multiple coaches.

So a threshold requirement to be in the discussion is that a QB's team must have won at least as many titles? And if two QBs won the same number of rings the fact that one's team beat the other in one game means that QB is automatically the best?

Lord.

I don't worry about Mahomes or any of these guys passing Brady because none of them will play as long as he did. In ten years, they all have half a billion dollars and even more info about CTE than we know now, and they'll all choose to retire at 35 and spend their money rather than risk winding up losing their marbles when they're 55 or 60 years old.

And if you look hard enough you can probably find a hold somewhere on most passing plays. Whether someone should be called for holding is still somewhat of a judgement call. Was he holding the defensive lineman for just a split second, or 3 seconds?? Getting hosed by a bad call sucks. We are sitting on our comfy coaches watching isolated slow motion replays on HD and bitching because a ref doesn't see a hold? Maybe a refs view was blocked? During the course of the year every team gets hosed by bad calls. Been like that since the beginning of sports. Imagine football now with no replay.

There will be lots of challenges. He’s also awesome. We can admit that (and despise him and the Chiefs for it). The individual numbers plus the team success definitely puts him on track to challenge Brady. I seriously doubt his career will be nearly as long, however, so he’ll need to start stacking rings soon.

The internet is never wrong. I could point out shit that I saw (like not calling forward progress to be stopped near the end of the 1st half, thus giving Cincy the equivalent of an extra time out, and others), but there are always bad calls. Too bad the faux controversy overshadows a pretty amazing effort by a defense with an essentially all-rookie secondary against a really fucking good Bengal offense and an offense with one legitimate WR and a one-legged QB against a really fucking good Bengal defense. Whatever, peace.

I just feel bad for Bengals fans. They seemed like the team that could overcome the SB loser hangover. Poor officiating may or may not normalize over a season, but within one game, it can be enough to swing the outcome.

They had to deal the unprecedented situation in the MNF game in which they were completely on fire, then barely survived vs Baltimore before trying to beat the 1&2 seeds on the road.

They almost pulled it off, but even beyond the officiating debacle, there were enough self-inflicted wounds to make this loss really hurt.

The TO management on the last drive. Not getting 7 at the half. The brutal penalty at the end. Not recognizing that the WR was basically telling the world that he dropped the crucial catch on KC’s first drive. Even Burrow missed some plays down the stretch. Just an awful way for a team’s season to end.

Not exactly amped for the SB, either. I think Philly’s D is the best of the 4 sides, by quite a bit. I’d be pretty confident if I were a fan, which I am definitely not.

Counting fouls is cherry picking to the nth degree, proves nothing and is meaningless 40 years after the fact.

Nonetheless the 76ers won in 7 the next year. Go figure. They were two great teams that played in very
memorable series.

Losing Hill and getting back to the SB is a start, but the Pats rolled over offensive personnel for many years with the same results of Brady getting them there. I think Kelce retiring/leaving will be the next hurdle for Mahomes to overcome. If he can pull different receiving corps to championship games over the course of around 15 years, he is in the conversation at least even if he doesn't have quite the longevity TB12 has.

Agreed, (about Paul, not chumps), but it’s high time he got back to the boards — that is my recurring theme around such questions of money v. merit.

Great game that ended shittily, methinks. Mr. Ossai has much to rue…
