Sure, but the Tua play against Cincinatti was brutal and looked like a guy who didn’t try to protect himself at all. The physics of it are probably weird, the helmet makes it harder to protect yourself but should cushion some of the blow. I really think most of them aren’t thinking about it at all. It looks like something that doesn’t even cross the player’s mind.
Yes, I had the same thought about the helmets being a hindrance as well - both in mobility and additional weight. I find it hard to believe that none of them are thinking about trying to fall more safely, which is why I assume that it’s probably more difficult than it appears. I remember being tackled back in the day and it can be pretty abrupt and violent. And I never had 300 pound linemen trying to sack me.

If that kind of hit is going to give him a concussion he's not going to last very much longer. But, there is still a lot we don't know about how this stuff works. There was a time when it seemed like Patrice Bergeron wouldn't have a long career.
The two concussions in successive weeks earlier this season was a huge problem. IANAMD, but the second concussion happening so close to the first one is like getting ten independent concussions. It's bad shit. If the org has their shit together, he's done for the year. Narrator: "they don't".

edit: if that sounds like I'm implying that it's a Dolphins problem, I'm not. It's an NFL problem.

Another confirmed concussion for Tua, Bridgewater will play Sunday.

Florio is reporting that the league and the NFLPA will investigate this latest concussion
Does the league investigate every concussion, or just every Miami Dolphins concussion?

McDaniel said in his presser today that reviewing the film, he saw things on tape that looked inconsistent and concerning and they started to question Tua about it before deciding that he needed to go speak to the doctors.

So Tua didn’t self-report. He played through a concussion. And he likely would have tried to play again this week had Mike McDaniel not spotted things on tape that lead him to believe he might have suffered a concussion.

Your call whether it's a whitewash or theater, but they do seem to review situations that could potentially lead to better implementation of the spotter protocols. Here's the report of the Davonte Parker concussion review. I suppose that sort of counts as a former Dolphin though.

Kenny Pickett has been concussed twice and there’s no joint task force investigating the Steelers.

Sorry, I missed the Dolphins persecution angle. Stuff goes over my head sometimes. We had 20,000 posts on deflategate, so if that's the angle you guys are about, it's your thread and who am I to step in.

I would say though -- Investigations designed to ensure players don't play with concussions are a good thing. Firing independent neurologists who are bad spotters is a good thing, although probably also some theater.

This is where it’s probably good to remember these are real live human beings and not get caught up feeling your team is being singled out.

I agree it’s just getting old seeing Miami in the news in a negative light all the time.

I think the biggest takeaway is Tua is a danger to himself. He was carted off the field in Cincy with what could have been a career, and potentially life threatening concussion, yet he still played through a concussion on Sunday. The fact that he didn’t take that Cincy hit as a warning is very alarming.

It seems like Tua wants to play, wants to succeed, wants to win very badly. No one can question his toughness, but he is bordering on reckless when he’s putting himself at risk like that.

Sounds like McDaniel handled it very well. Not realistic to expect coach to catch every potential concussion during a game. He saw a potentially dangerous hit in video and took action. Good for him. I think most coaches would still be passive in those situations and wait until the player or someone brought it to their attention.

I think the League needs to look into how this was not spotted by the "independent" spotter or the team regardless of the logo.

Kudos to McDaniel for acting like this after seeing the film, even if it`s a bit late it's much better than him playing through this.

And yes, regardless of playoff chances, Tua should sit out the rest of the season. any doctor that clears him to play is a potential killer.

Bingo. There is absolutely no reason why every single player who’s head bounces off the turf like that shouldn’t immediately be hauled into the blue tent for an exam. It was preposterous that it took Algholor basically pulling Parker off the field a few weeks ago, and it was mega super preposterous that no one checked out Tua, of all players, after that impact.

Three concussions in 10 weeks? The poor guy, I feel for what this is going to do to him years from now.

Bridgewater does have playoff experience at least. Of course it was the infamous 10-9 game when Blair Walsh missed the chip shot FG with 26 seconds left which would have given the Vikings the lead.

Teddy played pretty well for the Saints last year in backup duty as well, but he played a single snap in the game he was supposed to start against the Jets. The other times I’ve seen him coming in during the middle of the game, the offense looks completely lost.

Mike McDaniel has said that his gameplan is hyper-specific to the opponent and the QB playing, so when there’s a change mid-game, it becomes a bit of a scramble.

Hopefully we see a better representation of Teddy this week, but New England’s defense is no joke. First to score a TD might win.

This team is cursed. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team go through QBs 1, 2, and 3 multiple times in a season. Teddy not being able to finish a single game he’s participated in feels like a bad joke. No Armstead, Howard, and Chubb, this felt like a loss before kickoff.

Miami a Jason Sanders shanked field goal from possibly pulling that one out.

Josh Boyer with an inexcusably bad goal line decision when they had Meyers unmarked, they called a timeout, came out and ran the exact same fucking thing, and he’s wide open. Everyone points at Meyers, and fucking no one covers him.

An almost unimaginably bad tailspin and Miami is now looking up at the 7 seed.

Funny how this season seems like a reverse of last year. Catastrophic start in 2021 to go 1-7, strong finish to end up 9-8 and give hope for the future. This year, 8-3 start (loses mostly coming in seemingly freakish Tua-injury effected games), now 8-8 to create big question marks about the future. Can Tua play a full season? What the hell happened to the defense?

It’s easy to say that the injuries decimated the defense, and they did. But the coaching and execution has absolutely stunk at times.

The stats are insanely skewed vs Miami when they blitz, and yet they keep sending pressure over and over and getting carved up. That’s on Boyer.

Teddy might win that game if he doesn’t get hurt. I’m also not sure why Miami didn’t try and get a little more aggressive on some underneath stuff when it was obvious NE were trying to keep a lid on the deep stuff.

Cant speak to the other stuff, but Jones is really bad when being blitzed. Right move or not ,that probably explains the blitzes.

Any idea why Hill seemed to ge the Kendrick Bourne treatment late yesterday?

I haven’t been able to figure out some of Mike McDaniel’s decision making at times.

In a game where the Pats were very thin in the secondary, they roll out a run heavy game plan. Obviously Teddy being in there and not Tua has something to do with that, but I expected to see them a little more pass heavy and try and leverage Waddle and Hill versus that secondary more.

They clearly dialed up a few shot plays that wound up being checkdowns, but I didn’t think they made an adjustment to start getting them the ball short and getting them involved.

I have not watched the Dolphins much this year but I came away perplexed and unimpressed by McDaniel as well. Facing a team that struggles to score any points on offense I would definitely have schemed anything to get the ball into Hill and Waddle's hands short. Screens, crosses, etc. You just need one missed tackle and they're gone, McCourty is looking last final-season Ed Reed out there (mostly being in the right place but slowing down and not really good at tackling anymore); score three TDs and you probably have a win. The Dolphins' best play came when Mostert took a checkdown and broke like 5 tackles.

They also totally screwed themselves on the goal to go when the Pats scored their third TD by having the wrong guys on the field and not calling a TO, then coming back out and blowing a coverage after the timeout which left Meyers open.

Agreed with basically everything here. I’m not necessarily down on Mike McDaniel, but I think it’s clear he’s still figuring some things out as an OC and playcaller for the first time.

During most of this losing streak, the offense became way too one dimensional and Tyreek-centric. If there was ever a game to come out and just try and spam Waddle and Tyreek, it was this one. They were playing possession offense like they were going against the Chiefs or the Bills.

Miami looked like a team playing all of its second and third stringers out there because they were. Ugly, sloppy. A win is a win and the playoffs are the playoffs.

If Skylar or Teddy play, my expectations for next week are exactly zero. If Tua is able to play with Armstead, they have a shot.

I have to say that the idea Tua would/should be ready to play in 6-8 days makes me a bit uncomfortable. I’m not intending to cast aspersions on anyone specifically by saying this, so please don’t get me wrong, and I don’t have an elaborate analysis to pivot to, but that’s my sentiment.

Next week would be almost three weeks since his concussion. To my knowledge, he has been in the building, but I don’t think he’s even been in meetings the last two weeks.

My expectation is it’s Skylar starting versus Buffalo.

This has been a frustrating season for me, as a fan, but I'm happy that the Dolphins managed to crawl into the playoffs, even with the self-inflicted, bloody path they left behind along the way. Considering the schedule difficulty, the substantial injury misfortune, and the underwhelming Josh Boyer experience, I'm chalking this up as a successful first season for Mike McDaniel, regardless of the results of Sunday's game in Buffalo.

Additional thoughts:

- I think it's likely that Tua, Armstead, and all other questionable Miami players end up suiting up this weekend. Shit, I wouldn't even surprised if Mostert "casts up" and marches out there, as well.
- TA-Eichenberg-Williams-Jones-Hunt could make for a solid OL group. The Dolphins should look to run -- a lot -- vs. the Bills.
- I think Miami moves on from Boyer, unless a miracle takes place (playoff run).

Skylar to start versus Buffalo. I fully expect a double digit slaughter.
Injuries are a part of the game and I would much rather Miami handles Tua with kid gloves and he makes a complete recovery and is ready to go next year, but as a football fan, I'd much prefer watching Buffalo/Miami with Tua at 100% vs the third string QB who hung 9 points on the Jets, or Cincinnati/Baltimore with Lamar Jackson at 100% as well.

Just a lousy situation in general.

Agreed that not playing is in Tua’s best interest.

As a fan, the last time Miami made the playoffs, I had to watch Matt Moore get his jaw broken versus Pittsburgh because Ryan Tannehill tore his ACL.

Would be cool to see Miami actually make the playoffs and have a chance one time.

Armstead and Chubb active today. Mostert and Tua not.

I only hope for a competitive showing. Please don’t be an embarrassing blowout. I think McDaniel can scheme up some looks for Skylar and Hill and Waddle remain a threat regardless of who is at QB.

Have fun playing the villain today, with Damar Hamlin in the house. :)

(This would be the game of the week if Tua or even TBW were healthy. Fins have had more than their share of bad breaks this season.)

On one hand I’m mad because Miami beat themselves more than Buffalo beat them. The INT Skylar threw up in the third quarter completely shifted the game and it was inexcusably bad playcalling and execution there. Play after play after play Skylar was running up to the line with 5 seconds and snapping blind. The drops in the first half were so bad.

On the other, Miami was supposed to get blown out, they had every reason to fold up, and they battled the fuck out of Buffalo for 60 minutes.

If they have Tua, that game maybe goes the other way. I think that Miami had almost everything go against them from a luck and injury standpoint and still went toe to toe in Buffalo again with QB3.

McDaniel will hopefully take a lot away from this season and clean a bunch up. There’s a lot of promise there, but it very much felt like a rookie head coach and playcaller in the deep end of the pool for the first time.

If Josh Allen doesn’t throw one of either of those INTs, the Bills win by two TDS, imo.
If Skylar Thompson doesn’t throw one of either of those INTs, Miami wins.

Turnovers are part of the game and ignoring that Miami basically handed the Bills points while trying to insinuate Miami received some gifts is pretty silly.

Both teams created turnovers. Both teams capitalized.
