I shared that I am a coach a few times. I had coached various levels but went back to High School when my kid played. This is likely my last year of high school, and I have a good team. For various reasons, some political some bad timing I have never played or coached in the most prestigious tournament in my region. Though by the criteria (#1 in my city preseason rankings) I should have been invited this year the kind people instead invited the team that missed a chance to play last year due to covid. That team withdrew realizing they were not up to the high level of competition, and now we are able to go. In many ways, win or lose it is a nice way for me to go out, and I then leave the basement-dwelling (before I came) program at or near the top.

Here is my problem. We are a school with low-income students and we need to fund our travel from student fees. We are already maxed out. In fact I have already had to chip in for shoes, and other fees for my guys. I will not ask for $ directly but the link below is a local charity that has helped me immeasurably through the years. I explained to them I would try to raise donations money for them before I came back to ask for more. If you are in Canada you get a tax receipt for a charitable donation. They take Paypal, etc. If you donate drop them a line that you were sent by the Walter Murray (school name) team, or PM me for my personal info. If say ten guys donate 15 bucks each that is probably hotel costs for 4 players.

Edit: If you donate I will ignore all of the cliche Canadian jokes for one year. If you donate enough I will leave a Canadian accent voice message on your cell phone, eh.

Donated - I tried to do it in the name of Aaron Nesmith, but no luck.

We may be bad at a lot of things, and in a lot of ways, but we do tend to rally for a good cause. Hope donors, and the team, comes through to make this happen!

Good Luck!

How much are you looking to raise at this point?
In total it will be 2000 or so Canadian Dollars. I doubt we can get that much donated, but if it goes above it is a great cause. The guy who runs it is a guy who loved high school sports, was good high school player, and has made good money and noticed sports funding tends to be for kids under 12 or the elite college teams looking for scholarships, facilities, 25g trips abroad, So he focuses on high school age kids. In Canada school sports have the hype, and competitiveness of USA schools but next to no funding so it has been passed on to the players and their families. Until recently the teams from wealthier neighborhoods were tough to compete with.

Thanks to everyone.

Post this in P&G. Ask @AlNipper49 for permission if you feel uncomfortable, but this is as close to on mission as the site gets, and lots of other causes have passed before.

Dork.

I mean, no, it’s not saving someone from cancer… but this shit matters too. A lot. We save lives because life is worth living; this shit is part of that. Let people decide for themselves.

Let’s fucking do this.

I will donate tomorrow from my laptop. Is that link directly associated with your "fund"? because on my phone I don't see a place to leave any directions or notes - eh. I just want to make sure it is going where it needs to...

Is it just me or when you get to the PayPal page and it asks if you want to add a note it’s not letting me enter one? I want to fork over some $CAD but want to make sure it gets to you guys.

Same for me. But the donate with credit card option did allow it, and then I backed up, chose Paypal again, and the comment was there. *shrug*

Sent in a donation.

For SOSH: We are all settled up for this year so if anyone was planning on subscribing, drop me a note and I'll we'll send it over 1:1, and I'll also match it. I'll match up to $1000 to cover the full nut.

I hope to get an update later today. I have a feeling they will be pleasantly surprised when they check the Paypal account.
I don't have any idea of the $, but am overwhelmed by the response. If we go and I get interviewed I will try to throw in a "bear vs shark", or an "hours of sleep" reference. If the total gets really high maybe a Big Giant Pencil reference.

Nice work here @reggiecleveland

My daughter is in 9th grade and made the Sr. basketball team
I'm hoping their team will be strong enough during grad year 2025/26 to be able to attend this tournament as well

Also, @reggiecleveland, I'm sure you're at or past your goal already, but it might not hurt to check into the local KidSport (https://kidsportcanada.ca/saskatchewan/saskatoon/) and see if the team is able to apply for a grant?
I've only dealt with them regarding individual player fees over my time as treasurer for minor ball, but they may be able to provide some funding as well, especially at the end of the year, if they are trying to hit their "spending" quotas

I got Romeo Langford to throw in some money.

If we get enough $, is there any way to get a SOSH patch on the jerseys during the tournament?

Good luck. Pics or it didn't happen.

So, I donated but because I'm a moron, I forgot to look for a place to credit the monies to Walter Murray. Is there a way to let them know after the fact?

On another note, I need to get back up to Canada soon--$1 USD is trading for $1.30 CAN.

Donated. Go Reggie's Team, love SOSH!

My mom was a great gym teacher and coach and inspired so many kids, even now into retirement. I bet you do too.

I get the impression there have been no donations for a while, so I expect he knows it is to us. But if you go here there is text box to comment.

They told me the total is at 1200 right now. If it goes beyond 2000, that will still help my team pay back some of what he had promised us earlier and can benefit our girls team, and lots of other kids in our city.

We’re fucking bodying this cause like Derek Forbert, though.
...but with the smooth moves of Jean Ratelle, and the deft touch of Rick Middleton!

(worth noting that Nifty is pushing 70, and Jean is, um, 82...)

Reggie, can you idiot proof this for me? Provide a link to donate and provide text for the donator so that they know it should go to your team? Thanks!
