Those top 3 QBs have been pretty hit and miss lately. But I agree that Denver pick is looking pretty sweet. Even Schneider could not have hoped things would have turned out this well.

Welp, they did it again, beating the 6-1 Giants to go to 5-3 and maintain a 1 game lead on the NFC West. Geno was solid, and the offense in general played well, but the defense has really stepped up and has gone from one of the worst in the league for the first 3 weeks to one of the best in the last 5 weeks.

Next week they head to their personal house of horrors, Arizona, where it seems they have a major injury every year (Quandre Diggs last year, Sherman and Chancellor in 2017, Earl Thomas and Will Dissly in 2018, among others). Then it's to Germany for a date with Tom Brady and the Bucs before their bye week. The goal next week is no major injuries. A win would be nice too, but I'd be happy with getting out of there without someone's season coming to an end.

At this point in the season, beating that piece of crap Arizona team absolutely has to be the goal.

Geno Smith had 9 TD against 1 INT and a QB rating over 100 for the month of October. 13/3 100+ for the year. He's 32. Sucked for the jets and got dumped by the Giants. I don't understand advanced football stats so can't speak to whether he's been lucky or good... so what's the story with this guy?

He has fit into the offense almost perfectly and he's doing a lot of things that Russell wouldn't do, particularly throwing over the middle. Here's a ridiculous stat I just saw. Geno throwing to TEs: 53-61, 541 yards, 5 TD, 0 INT, 130.94 Rating. As a comparison, in 2020 (since Russ was hurt last year) in 16 games, he was 73-106, 759 yards, 6 TD, 4 INT, 92.45 Rating. Geno is doing better in the advanced stats than he is in traditional stats. He's just playing really well and is a total shocker to me.

Edit: The other element here is the drastic improvement of the offensive line. The rookie tackles have had rookie moments, but they are both very solid. The interior needs work but has been serviceable.

To add to this, he is doing what Russ wouldnt do which is work through progressions instead of trying to make it all happen himself. I was a bit worried he would get happy feet after that Homer missed assignment that allowed him to just get lit up on a sack but he just stood tall and kept playing.

His first two years in the league werent great but he was also playing for the Jets who werent exactly great before they drafted him. Year three saw him break his jaw in a fight with a teammate and year four had him tear his ACL. He then played backup for the Eli and then Rivers for a year a piece before moving to Seattle. He has never been great but he hasnt been terrible other than the first couple of years as a rookie on a shitty team

I just couldnt resist the joke about the lame suspension. The reality is I think we were all wrong on what this team was going to be this year. If you had told me they are 5-3, lead the NFC West, and are 4th in offense I would have laughed at you so hard I would have ended up pissing my pants.

Same. I am still a Geno skeptic, but credit where credit is due. With Denver sucking out loud, the Seahawks have a chance to return to dominance quickly.

Between rooting for the Lions because of Dan Campbell on Hard Knocks (not gone well) and for the Seahawks because of my absolute disdain for the phony self-righteous Russell Wilson, my non-Patriots watching NFL fandom has been quite strong this year.

Just wow. I expected a good game but I did not expect Seattle to ever really look as good as they did. Even when Smith threw that pick 6 they never looked in trouble as they came right back down the field and scored a TD. KWIII (or K9 as he is known in Seattle) is an electric RB who looks like he could break any play wide open. K9 is second in rookie RB stats behind Houston's Dameon Pierce but has 4 less games started. Geno's success at QB has many pundits in the PNW wondering if the problem was RW3 not the offensive play calling. Geno is making Shane Waldron look absolutely brilliant and adding a lot of fuel to the fire that RW3 was the offensive problem not the play calling. Yesterday the 13 personnel set (1WR 3TE 1RB) was unstoppable even when the announcers knew what was coming.

On the D side of the ball this team looks completely different than they did after the Saints game. Credit to Clint Hurtt (DC) for listening to his team and changing how they did business. Multiple interviews have said that after the players only meeting following the Saints game disaster, they approached Hurtt to ask for the change. Rather than continuing with the 2-gap read/react assignment, they wanted a 1 gap attack to be more aggressive. This has lead to the D line getting more pressure in the back field and forcing QB/RBs to alter their game plans. As the game went on it became obvious that Kyler Murray was getting anxious about getting pressure.

6-3 and with a 1.5 game lead in the NFC West is not where I would have expected this team to be after 9 games. On to Germany and playing the Tompa Bay Buccaneers with house money we go.

And the last two games have been a complete shitshow. The offense was bad against Tampa and really not much better against the Raiders. Geno made a number of poor decisions, so all those articles about what Geno should be paid next year can be put on hold. Frankly, I'd be happy if he'd go elsewhere if he's going to be paid $30 million a year, no matter how long the deal.

The defense was brutally bad today. All of their weaknesses were exposed and they are going to have to adjust if they expect to win again. Run defense was piss poor and there was no pass rush for the 2nd consecutive week. Until those things are fixed, they are a fringe playoff team at best. Next week against the Rams is crucial. Even with all of the Rams injuries, they may not score against Aaron Donald, so the best they can hope for is a tie.

Looking at the NFC schedules you still have a good shot to make the playoffs and you outsourced your tank. Seems like you’re in good shape

Well, they managed to beat the Rams (barely) by not having to face Aaron Donald and most of the offense. Then they shit the bed against the Panthers. Geno's decision making continues to be poor at times (2 bad INTs among other things) and the run defense after showing signs of competence against the Chargers and Giants has completely fallen apart. The Rams had 171 yards rushing (their season best) with a poor OL and mediocre at best RBs. Then the Panthers trounce them for 223 rushing yards, amazingly only their 2nd best effort to 232 yards against the Falcons. Panthers were 19th in rushing yards and 17th in YPC coming into the game and the Rams were in the bottom 3 in both categories. Seattle is 31st in rushing yards against and 28th in in YPC against. They are also 28th in passing yards against, but somehow only 16th in NY/A. They are also 5th in takeaways, so that helps, as well as tied for 10th in sacks, but 21st in overall pressure stats. The pass rush is non-existent most games.

I almost wish the Hawks would make the playoffs and win their first playoff game so they could face the Eagles and see how bad the run D really is. The record for team rushing yards in a game is 423 by the Giants in 1950 against the Colts. The Super Bowl era record is 407 by the Bengals in 2000 against the Broncos. I think the Eagles could get both of those in that potential game. The playoff record is 381 by the Bears in 1940 in the NFL Championship game 73-0 against the Redskins. The Super Bowl era record is 341 in 1995 by the Bills against the Dolphins.

This team has certainly exceeded my expectations, as I expected this to be a 4-5 win team. But it's clear there's a lot of work still to be done. The jury is still out on Clint Hurtt as a DC. They still have a lot of the same problems they had in previous years under Ken Norton Jr; bad run D, not really playing together cohesively, communication issues and coverage breakdowns. There's some decent talent here, but maybe they need to ship some of it out for players that fit together better.

It's frustrating to watch them lose games they had the potential of winning, against similar or worse teams (Panthers, Raiders, Falcons, Saints, Bucs). They did also have the benefit of a gift from Denver. But as long as they can make progress with the young players, they can continue to build for next year especially with potentially the #2 and #33 draft picks next year from Denver as well as their own picks (they have all of theirs except the 7th rounder they traded, plus they have a 5th from the Steelers for Ahkello Witherspoon). If they fluke into the playoffs, so be it.

The rest of the schedule is tough (vs. red-hot SF, @ KC, vs. Jets and vs. Rams - who always give them problems), so I expect a 5 game losing streak to end the year.

Oh, and this quirky little stat:

vs. AFC West 2-1 (1 game remaining)
vs. AFC East 0-0 (1 game remaining - the bonus 17th)
vs. NFC West 3-1 (2 games remaining)
vs. NFC East 1-0
vs. NFC North 1-0
vs. NFC South 0-4

The Seahawks playoff hopes come down to winning against the Rams (always a thorn) and the Lions beating the Packers (not holding my breath with the game in Lambeau). I would be happy with 9-8 either way, given I thought this was a 4 or 5 win team at the beginning of the year.

The picks from Denver are locked into the top 5 at this point, and could be as high as 2 if they lose and the Bears beat the fading Vikings.

So miracles do happen!

Despite missing a FG to win in regulation, and punting on their first possession in OT, they pick off Mayfield and drive down for the GW FG 19-16 and get to watch the night game. Which amazingly goes their way with the Lions taking down the Packers 20-16. Now the Hawks get to go to Santa Clara to face the Niners for the 3rd time this season, losing 27-7 @ Santa Clara and losing 21-13 at home. Their best chance is to get the running game going and control the ball, hope the defense steps up and special teams continues to come through. It's going to take an almost perfect game to beat the Niners. I just don't know if they are capable of it.

A Super Bowl run would require beating the Niners, the Eagles, and the other survivor all on the road. It could happen. It's just not likely.
