I'll start the thread and take the heat if things don't go well.
I'm optimistic for the first time in a while, they may not be great but they should be competitive. Between a strong finish to last season and some nice recruits things appear to be moving in the right direction.
I like what Earl Grant is bringing to the table.

If nothing else, we have one of the best names in College Basketball in Armani Mighty. I thought about adding "Mighty Mighty Eagles" to the thread name, but let's not jump the gun.
Armani comes advertised as a big time defensive specialist who needs work on offense. If he can be BC's poor man's version of a young TimeLord I'd take that in a heartbeat.

@Dave Stapleton, can you expand on the "encouraging news coming out of early secret scrimmages" that you mentioned in the other thread?

This is BC so we know how it probably ends but Earl has done a nice job here. The 2022 class is full of intriguing guys like Hand, Mighty, and Aligbe. 2023 off to a nice start with an athletic big in Hastings and a scoring guard in Payne. I’m far more bullish on this team than the football squad.

BC has had 2 “secret scrimmages”. Word is that they won a close one against Seton Hall and dominated Harvard.

Post is out for Cornell with an ankle injury it seems. Demarr is also banged up. Neither is expected to be serious.

I like Earl Grant a lot and wish him and the team the best. I think they are an NIT team with an outside chance at the tournament.

Opening night tomorrow at home vs. Cornell and former coach Steve Donahue. BC will be without two starters in D. Langford and Q. Post.
Opening night jitters, breaking in a bunch of new guys, down two starters and revenge game for opposing coach leaves me with some trepidation for tomorrow nights game.

Donahue came from Cornell but after BC went to Penn, where he still is.

3 close games to Cornell, Detroit, and Maine isn't great, though it's kind of hard to tell what we have here until they can actually play a few games without half the lineup getting hurt.

I can comfortably say that this team doesn’t have enough shooters. Losing Hand and Aligbe so early was a nut punch. And Post is a solid player so his presence is being missed as well. We are cursed.

We have a member here from Worcester who told me he tried to each the Langford brothers how to shoot once. Unfortunately it never took.

Really is too bad. They have many of the other attributes that make good college players and they’re both still net positives even with the shooting deficiencies. But it’s really hard from a spacing standpoint to have them both in. Jaeden is really the only “good” shooter this team has, IMO.

Madsen came in advertised as a shooter, and was very good against Detroit. Not so much the other 2 games though.

Career 34% 3 point shooter through almost 50 games, which isn’t great for college. He seems like more of the streaky type vs. a consistent shooter that you can rely on most games.

Tarleton is not a bad team at all and have a real good coach. Probably shouldn’t be getting blown out of the building by them however.
We’re talking about a team that lost at home to Maine. They suck. Tarleton may be a decent squad but I will continue to hammer this BC squad for sucking.

Can’t shoot at all, which is somewhat problematic.

Yeah BC is not good. They have a tough one today in Wyoming too who is coming off a 25-win season, NCAA appearance while returning one of their best players. That new coach has done a quick 180 with their program.

Seeing other programs turn it around so quickly just triggers me even more. It shouldn’t be this hard. Many of these smaller conference teams play with the tenacity that BC once played it.

Saw your post in the football thread too. "Football isn't a priority at the school". No sports seem to be priority at the school now.

The school will be as competitive in sports as the admissions department allows it to be. They won the bigfoot battle over a decade ago, and the ADs have zero juice. Sucks to see it, but they'd rather be Tufts than good.

Caught a break today. Wyoming is pretty much a 2-man team, Ike and Maldonado. The former is injured and out while the latter went down at the first tv timeout. Gotta take what you can get though. At least they came out with a purpose after last game.

Wins will be hard to come by soon so I’ll take it. No idea when Post, Aligbe, or Hand will be back.

Obviously the 2 losses were bad, but they've been down at least 2 starters and 3 or 4 of their top 7 guys in every game so far. Its been ugly, but I'm not writing them off given the circumstances. Decent win today even though Wyoming's best player missed the 2nd half, but we were missing Aligbe, Post, Langford, and Hand. Aligbe in particular looked like he will be a major contributor. He's a high energy guy with some talent to match. Hand looked like he will help too. It's hard to get a read right now with the injuries, but I still think they will be moving in the right direction if the injuries aren't long term. I definitely agree that they need better shooting though. If everybody gets healthy and they lose to StoneHill or New Hampshire in December THEN its time to panic.

I think Post injury has really hurt them. Not sure how much Hand was going to contribute early on. Aligbe showed energy before he got hurt and was contributing.

Problem with the injuries is that while everyone is gelling, we’re stuck in limbo. We’ll basically be back in November while everyone has had a month+ with their teams.

This wasn’t going to be a tourney year but we’re losing prime development minutes with these injuries, which sucks.

Agreed. They definitely win the Maine game if Post and Aligbe play. Not sure about Tarleton though. They were small so those two might have had their way inside, but Tarleton's perimeter defense was suffocating. We had no answer for that.

On a side note, I'm not sure which was worse, Jarius Hamilton's 4 stars 5 years ago or Armani Mighty's 3 stars this year. He's long, but he's terrible. Has BC ever had a good Canadian player? When I was a freshman way back when they had a 7 foot senior named Ron Crevier. We used to chant his name so Gary Williams would put him in during garbage time.

I generally grade big men on a curve because they take longer to develop but…yeah…he looks awful. But it’ll be pretty hard to disappoint me more than Jairus Hamilton did. I was so excited for him and he just never cared about basketball. Ditto for Josh Southern who actually has some real skill but who had the drive of Pervis Ellison.

Another year of irrelevance, injuries are killer but you still can't lose games to Maine or UNH, 2 of the bottom tier teams in the country. They were a 15 point favorite today and blew the game twice, first by not fouling late in regulation, and then by falling apart in overtime after getting a 5 point lead.

Beyond awful.
3 - 22 from 3, which is the main reason they were in a position to botch the last play in regulation and then OT.

Does anybody know what the story is with Post? Before the first game the announcers said it was a minor injury. That was either bad info or he had a setback.

Really nice win over Virginia Tech. They played tough, scrappy defense, which is what they did most of last year but had not been the case this year. The shooting is still a major problem, 3-19 from 3, but Ashton-Langford hit a huge one in OT and he played very well overall. Devon McGlockton had a big game, he has become a major contributor the last few games. A glimmer of hope!

Nine fouls called on Duke the entire game at home? You would’ve thought ratface was still on the bench.

Outrageous. Duke is not a good team this year (probably won’t see top 25 rest of the year) but it still would have been a nice win to show progress.

Yup ridiculous. This team with Post and Aligbe back is at least capable of playing teams tough now. Still don’t have enough shooting but nothing they can do at this point.

Losing Hand was huge. No guarantees with a freshman but he came in with the scorer/shooter resume this team needs.

Post completely changes the look of this team. All the guards have better just by having him on the floor and opening things up

Yup. Hard to know what they had in Hand but losing him to a major injury just sucks. Post has been so solid basically his entire time here.

Career high 29 from Post today. Not a whole lot to get excited about right now, but it's always nice to beat ND twice.

Wow what a win, the Langford brothers combined for 28 points on 11-14 shooting.

9-10 in the ACC, feels like the program is heading in the right direction, and this was without Hand all season.

I agree. The key is to keep Post from the NIL transfer next year. Grant really is building something. Third win against a ranked team.

Love the defense. If Post stays and they bring in a shooter or 2 via the portal they could make some noise next year.

Don't forget that Hand will be back and, by all accounts, he is a shooter with strong offensive game. Would be great to see McGlockton continue to improve and a little more from Aligbe.

I think finding some NIL money for Post will be key unless he believe he has a real shot at the pros.

Obviously didnt get to see enough of him to know for sure, but my impression was similar to yours with regard to Hand. Which is good, they will need another scorer to replace Ashton-Langford. I could be wrong but I don't think he's above average from 3 though. They could really use a sniper.

Edit: BC is shooting 31.7% from 3 as a team right now, which is 295th in the country. Other things are looking better as they've gotten healthier but they clearly need to improve that

BC still has a chance to avoid the play in game with a win over GT and a WF win over Syracuse.

In any event, a 10-10 conference record and winning record overall would be a pretty great result particularly given the start of the year. This team really is a different squad with Post on the floor.

Post was a legit find. Does he have another year? Need to keep him away from portal, if he does.
