Wow, this is awesome. At a minimum, they should play against each other. That would be super fun. Although with Italy missing, team Unqualified would be a load. Can we workshop a Starting XI for both sides in this match??
Could do Unqualified now, but will have wait till squads are announced before we could do Rejected. But for Unqualified, my XI would be: Oblak; Alaba, Chiellini, Bonucci, ; Veratti, Kessie, Jorginho, Odegaard; Chiesa, Haaland, Salah. Options for the bench: Zlatan, Luis Diaz, Aubameyang, Dzeko, Zaha, Keita, Schick, Soucek, Mahrez, Donnarumma

Dybala has a torn thigh muscle. Jose indicated that he won’t suit up for Roma again in 2022, and it seems unlikely Dybala can make Qatar.

Cross-posting from the Barca thread:

On a related note, I've come around to trying Portuguese Rs as the correct Hs. It's a tough transition, as so many of the modern Brazilian legends feature Rs (Romario, Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho), but it's at least doable for current players (Richarlison, Raphinha).
I assume this is all Portuguese, but is there a pronunciation split among Portuguese-speaking peoples??

The other tough one that immediately comes to mind is the German/Turkish 'G' (as in Gundogan, being pronounced Goon-doe-wan, at least as I understand it).

I watched a Barca documentary recently and they interviewed a Dutch player/coach, I wanna say either Koeman or Van Gaal (pronounced Van-haal BTW) and his pronunciation of Cruyff was utterly baffling to me (best written out as 'craowf').

So then, my fellow 'Gazzans (gotta work on that one!), what other pronunciations in world football need correcting??

The only one I can give much authority on is former keeper Wily Caballero (in Argentina, 'll' is pronounced like 'zh' or 'sh'). So it's 'cah-bah-zheh-roh', not 'cah-bah-yeh-roh'. Very confusingly, Villarreal keeper Geronimo Rulli is pronounced 'roo-lee'. He has dual citizenship with Argentina and Italy though, so maybe it's an Italian thing?

There are multiple dialects across Brazil. All of them differ greatly from Portugal. I've noted differences with Cape Verdeans and Madeirans; but neither are as pronounced as Brazilians. I've had Brazilians tell me Portuguese people sound like they have cotton in their mouths.

British announcers caring about the pronunciation of literally anything would be a nice start. Alphonso Davies can be the first in line for an apology.

Is the 'R = H sound' a Brazil-specific thing?

"Davis", like the square in somerville. DAYV-eez is not something they're used to, I guess.

He probably wouldn't be first in line, though. Other players get mangled on a far more regular basis.

Not sure. I mostly pick up how they pronounce "ç", which has an S sound. Brazilians will pronounce it closer to CH. Since so many players, and MMA fighters, are also Catholic they will often say "Graça a Deus" (Grace be to God), but they will always add the CH to the S sounds.

I love everything about that.
Right?

The home side is Club The Strongest (in English).

The stadium is Hernando Siles Stadium in La Paz, at 11000 feet:

I really think this game would have been the best thing to see ever, like if you asked me to pick between this and the Olympics London thing with the Spice Girls and James Bond and the Queen it would be this and I wouldn't think twice.

the only problem with that kit is, in Brooklyn, while getting lunch in an unfamiliar neighborhood I might inadvertently wander into the local Club Bolivar bar in Little Bolivia, and get pummelled.

me too.

edit: what’s the significance, is there a story behind the plane? I assume it’s not just sponsor porn.
I’ll confirm with my friend Peter (who has been going to Union games for like 50 years, and you can’t imagine this guy’s happiness over what is happening now) at the Pokal on Wednesday…but, here’s my take: there was a lot of singing about Union going international last night. So airplane. Also, the plane rising over the mountains (edit: in the sunrise, no less!) is kinda symbolic of the team’s trajectory. And there seemed to be a lot of “Ossie” feeling last night. At least I was aware of that as an American, and I’d never really felt that there before (probably because of this picture, which I posted in the UEL thread). Peter’s daughter (a friend of my wife’s, which is how I became friends with Peter) came last night too, and she even commented on how everyone sounded like they were from Köpenick last night - where she grew up and where the stadium is. We must have run into 5 or 6 friends of theirs on the walk through the woods to the stadium. So to finish the “Ossie” thought, I thought the plane looked like a Tupolev from behind last night and wondered if it matched the livery for Interflug, the East German flag carrier. And sure enough - I just checked because of your question…

https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interflug

And speaking of international, they’re at least guaranteed dropping into the knockout stage of the Conference Leage, so UEFA soccer in 2023!

Lewandowski still deserves the award but you can't say that Benzema hasn't earned it.

Kante has hamstring surgery, out 4 months.

No World Cup, which is a blow to France. They certainly have the midfield talent to fill his role, but with very young guys who’ll be at their first WC. Kante will be a big loss.

Also means Kante is likely to hit the summer window on free. Will be interesting to see what he can get.

Oh poor France! They'll have to pick from the pupu platter of...Tchoua, Camavinga, Fofana, Aouar, Rabiot, Tolisso, Guendouzi, Pogba, Lemar, Dembele...

The WC is a young man's game. I don't even think this dents their chances TBH.

He's Argentina's WC referee, as well.
I thought he did remarkably well considering the circumstances. Argentine refs have good training with all the shithousery that goes on in the domestic league. One of the most interesting things about the WC (depending on how you look at it) is that you get refs from all over the world, and outside of Europe the game is still remarkably physical. Most viewers like to see the skill at work and prefer a tightly called match, but by the end of tournaments you usually see the players adjust and the game looks different as a result. I always feel like the international game benefits physically gifted players (i.e., bigger and faster) more than the club game, because the teams just aren't as well-practiced and it's more about organization and winning 1v1s.

The other night I watched a few minutes of every world cup final and the typical tackles that came in during the 70s and 80s are all cards in the modern game. The best part is watching a defender absolutely hack down a player from behind with a 2-footed slide, get a yellow, and rise up incensed at the call--let alone the card. It's a different game man, for the better I'd add.

The Glazers just confirmed it. Oh my God.

This could be the biggest story of the season.
Liverpool and United could potentially sold within a short period of each other.

I wonder if the writing is on the wall for owning EPL clubs. With FFP an absolute joke, it may be time to get out while the value is still high.
