By biggest issue with Stream: the increments to rewind and fast forward are stupid. Since switching to AppleTV I’ve become addicted to voice control. “Hey Siri, fast forward N seconds/minutes” just works. DirecTV doesn’t support that. You can only rewind and fast forward using the buttons on the remote. And if a timeline exists, I haven’t found it. You can only fast forward and rewind in preset 30 second increments.

Glad to read this because I hated Direct TV Now. I'm glad it's better. I wish it wasn't owned by AT&T though. They seemed to go out of their way just to make their customers miserable.
AT&T spun off all of its Time-Warner holdings to Discover a couple of weeks ago. They are no longer in the entertainment business.

How do you channel surf with DTV Stream?? I am on Roku if it matters.

I can’t find this documented anywhere, but I saw someone channel surfing on Roku on a YouTube video review of the service. I have Apple TV. On Apple TV, it’s left and right arrow on the default Apple remote, or Channel Up/Down if you’re using a bigger remote with those buttons.

So our current Xfinity cable/internet deal is about to expire and bump up in price so its looking likely we will be moving service to Verizon (mobile as well) and going internet only + YTTV. Ultimately it probably wont be a huge savings, but enough to ditch cable.
Currently we have 900mps internet, which seems fine. Thinking about just doing 500mps plan to save a few more bucks but curious if anybody has any experience to know if this will be enough for our family of 4 with 2 teenagers who game/stream fairly frequently? Also, this may be a dumb question, but I see with YTTV we get 6 accounts. Is it safe to assume we get regular YouTube content Ad Free with each account as well? Don't see it mentioned anywhere. This would be a huge selling point for YTTV.

YTTV does not include YT Premium.

Edit: It might have a 3 month free trail though

Straight from the net: A download speed of 500Mbps allows you to stream ultra-HD video on 20 devices at the same time, or download a HD movie in 1 minute. If you're using a broadband internet connection with download speeds of 500Mbps, you can comfortably stream ultra-HD quality video on up to 20 devices at the same time

500 is fine. I think mine is 100 and I've never had an issue but it's just 2 of us. Even if we are downloading games.

Crap. That’s weak. That should totally be a given. Honestly I would probably rather have 4 Premium YT accounts that YTTV. We watch a lot of YT content and the ads suck.

YouTube Premium or Music Premium is like $18/month for a family account, which covers all your music plus ad free youtube. You could cancel your Spotify or other subscription for it, and we're talking like a two beers at a bar or restaurant a month.

I guess I should have done more homework before posting. Is the family plan newish? I recall looking into it a while back and it was only individual for like $12 or something. I agree that's a decent deal if cancelling Spotify (which I admit I would miss).

Yep, YT Premium individual is $12 and family is $18. It's a no brainer for the family plan IMO. I don't think you will miss much with Spotify. There are apps that can transfer all your playlists right over.

Back to this, everything I'm reading seems to say the same thing. However, when I spoke with Xfinity to see if they would negotiate a better deal they say we use almost 1gb /mo so should stick with the Gig plan. Of course they want to sell the bigger plans so I get their motivation. I admit to not having a great grasp on this stuff, but the data usage is different than speed, right? Is there a point where they are correlated and the usage is an indicator of the speed we require?

It's the difference between "I drive 65mph on the highway" (speed) and "I drive 10k miles a year" (usage). If you only drive 20mph everywhere, you won't likely put 20k miles on the car. If you don't drive much, even at highway speed, you also won't put many miles on the car.

If you use 1 gigabyte per month (seems very, very, very low - are you sure they didn't say terabyte? that's 1000 gigabytes) in theory your 1 gigabit/second connection can supply that in 8 seconds at peak. (By comparison, I don't stream much netflix, stream a lot of music, and play video games. My monthly usage is around 120 gigabytes/month, it goes from 100-150 depending on the month. It's not counting TV you watch, as far as I know.)

The main reason to check out the higher-speed plans is that they often come without data usage caps, or very high ones. But if you are really only using 1 gigabyte, you're going to be well inside any monthly data usage cap. My Xfinity plan's monthly cap is ~1200 gigabytes (= 1.2 terabytes), more than that I'll start hitting overage charges. So I'm using like 10-12% of the usage cap most months.

This is their 1.2 gigabit/second plan, mostly because that was what had the best promo rate when I renewed it last year. I used to have something like 300 megabit (= 0.3 gigabit / second) before that but the 300 megabit plan was either discontinued or actually more expensive than the 1.2 gigabit plan when I renewed, I forget which.

Thanks, this is really helpful, but still a lot to unpack and trying to navigate a deal for internet, TV, and mobile is daunting. Was hoping to save money but they know how to structure this stuff just right to push you into spending more in one area to save in another.
BTW, our home data usage is more like 1000gb, not 1gb. Roughly between 850gb - 1025gb last 4 months. I imaging that would increase if we go with YTTV vs cable though

For sure your data usage will go up with YTTV - could easily be another 500GB/month, depending on how many devices, how many hours and what quality (4K/1080p/480p/etc).

I'm pretty sure the pricing (and the data cap) is designed to make the bundles more competitive with the cord-cutter internet-only plans, since you would have to pay extra per-month to increase the data cap.

Even for my simple case of just cable + internet, I had to make a spreadsheet to try to figure out the tradeoffs. Throwing mobile in there probably makes it 2x-3x harder.

I am trying DTV Stream (long story is I am using a universal remote with no number keys, Sofabaton X1, got used to using favorite channels mostly, but it really is clunky with my cable, and thought a streamer like this would fit better for that, DTV is the only option for RSN’s here, I like having YES and SNY) but it‘s only offering New York CBS, so I asked to cancel and they said I should have Connecticut CBS with my zipcode and will add it (entirely for Pats games, I work Sundays, so can’t justify some stupid amount of money for Sunday Ticket). Very curious if they follow through, if it’s not there by September I’ll ditch it and keep cable.

Finally did it and made the switch. Ditched cable and currently have a Roku + YTTV + all the other streaming services. I'm actually hoping after a month or so the family will realize there isn't a huge need for YTTV with all of the other streaming services cover most of our viewing habits. We rarely watch live TV but Ms. B likes to flip. One thing I wasn't prepared for was that the Roku remote can't pair with an external soundbar. I figure I could go with a universal remote but I think I would rather have a proprietary remote than fight syncing issues and what not. I returned the Roku Stick and grabbed the Roku Streambar, which is a downgrade for sure. Still better than TV though.

You should be able to set up the Roku remote to control the soundbar via HDMI-CEC. (you can google it for instructions)

Amazon Fire TV controls the soundbar too. I have found the Amazon Fire remote easier to pair with a soundbar. The process is a little more intuitive.

So around the first of the year, I ditched Optimum Cable/Internet bundle (I live in Stratford, CT) for Frontier fiber internet and YouTubeTV. I told YTTV that I lived on the Cape and it meant that I got all the Celtics games all spring, which was great. But they finally got wise to that and reminded me that I live in CT so I had to change my home area to CT (which means NYC stations).

Now the best thing about Optimum was that they delivered two CBS affiliates -- both NYC and Hartford. Since Hartford was consider Patiriots territory, I never missed a game. But I fear that this fall, YTTV will give me only CBS-NY and I'll be out of luck. So I figure maybe it's time to switch.

So as always, I turn to the collective brilliance that is SOSH-sourcing to help me find a new live TV source that will allow me to get Pats games all fall -- and bonus points if it offers me Celtics games all winter/spring.

So what say you SOSH-mind?

If you access YTTV from the Cape/Boston area at least once every few months (and update your home area while you're there), it will reset your account to the Boston channels. I usually do it with my phone's YTTV app because it uses the phone's location. If I'm not going to be visiting the Boston area in that time frame, I usually have my brother log in on my account from the Boston area every 90 days or so and I keep getting the Boston channels even down here in South Carolina.

F-ing Xfinity won’t do a 3 month service

moving today knock on wood (big thanks to HankScorpio for his thread that gave me hope) for probably 3 months and then to FL.Can change the contract only regionally/locally.

I want to give you money jerks, in person, would pay more prorated than yearly and you don’t want it and are pushing me literally to look for any deal online?

So what’s the best deal for 3 months (through Sunday before Thanksgiving) with all the football channels (Pats and P5, I guess I need CBS Boston, NBC national ABC national Fox ESPN 1 2 and U, SECN, ACCN and optional/bonus if there’s FS1 and B1GN

also want NBCS Boston for Celtics
also need whatever networks have MLB playoffs

also need DVR

had Fubo a couple years ago and it suckebut willing to try again

ill also have Netflix no matter what for non-sports

Do you want RedZone? I've been trying to find a replacement for Verizon Fios mostly because I want to get a streaming service that will work on my outdoor TV, first world problems I know. It has been near impossible to find everything I want at a reasonable price though. Fubu was probably the closest but it was missing local channels and Lifetime which is non-negotiable for the Mrs. DirectTV had a good but pricy package but no RedZone. RedZone for me was non-negotiable so the best place to start is here if that is the case for you, assuming you want all the NFL games I imaging that includes RZ.

I can go either way on RZ at $11/month
More likely to get it if no local channels

if I get 4 games on Sunday, and one of them
Is Pats, I’d probably pass

if I’m watching Pats at 1 I don’t have much use for Red Zone I’ll just watch whatever 4 pm game I’m given
There’s usually only 3 or maybe 4 of them and 1 is almost always a stinker

Alrhough if Pats have a night game, $11 is still cheaper than a burger/chix sandwich at a sports bar so who knows

I split time between Central and Southern NH which in the YTTV world gives me different local network affiliates. I like to keep the Southern NH ones but I mistakenly signed in to my YTTV account on my ipad when we were in Central NH and the next time I turned on my Roku up here it had changed my affiliates. Kind of a long winded way of saying I think him signing in while in Boston is what you need to do.

Not for me, no NESN. NESN + RZ is a unicorn.
You are right...there are not a lot of good options. We had Spectrum cable but their streaming app was garbage and their customer service was worse. We tried Fubo but it was missing channels that the rest of the family likes (which is a higher priority as I am the only person watching sports). We went back to YouTube TV and I listen to the games instead. It would be amazing if there was an "a la carte" solution where I could pick the stations I want to pay for, but I guess it would put a lot of lesser networks out of business.

Fubo was really close for me and the app worked excellent on Firestick, really just lacked Lifetime plus the local channels but that makes up about 1/3 of our TV viewing. I've become exhausted trying to build out packages on the streaming services, even considered using 2 if needed but then when you add in wifi the cost ends up about the same or more than FIOS. Guess I have to live with no redzone on the outdoor TV.

Are you sharing your account with others? The primary account holder sets the Home area. Your playback area changes base on where you're located.

I share my account with two others so we split the bill three ways. As the primary account holder, it's set to the Boston area since that's where I'm located. I use my phone to login the other two accounts every two months so they still get access to the recordings, etc but the playback area is where they're located. It's best to use the phone for this because of the built-in GPS. Trying to do this on a computer or some other device causes issues with YTTV not recognizing that you did the login.

I have Spectrum cable in southern Maine. I am about to be faced with also having Xfiniti cable in Northeast Massachusetts. They are maybe 40 miles apart. I pretty much need internet and local stations and sports channels in both places.

Just checking to see if I am missing some obvious way to avoid two cable bills.

Xfinity has an app and website that's basically a cable box. You can watch all your live TV and DVR stuff from anywhere. You might be able to get away with that as cable service and then just internet in Maine.

Following up on this, as my brother is about to move (from Newburyport to NH up near Lake Winnipesaukee), so I'm pitching him with the idea of splitting the account with him.

Will this work if I give him my username and PW, and he logs in up there and makes it "our" home area?

Are there any issues if both of us are watching at the same time? (Honestly, the only times I can see that happening is during Patriots or Celtics games -- neither one of us watches much live TV).

Any other recommendations about doing this?

Seacoast NH
I've got YTTV and split the service between a house in the seacoast area of NH and a house on Winnipesaukee. The only wonky thing that happened is that if I log into my account from my ipad at the lake I get defaulted over to Maine local channels like ABC (WMTW vs. WMUR) when I watch TV. The last time it happened I think I kept the Boston ABC channel (WCVB) and the next time I was at the seacoast house I logged back in on the ipad to refresh the location.

Having him be the owner to default the home area to central NH should be fine to keep watching New England sports (I think).

yes, this will work. You might want to create a separate Google account for YTTV so he doesn’t have access to your drive/mail. He’ll need to login to the account every 2 months as part of Home area checkin.

Shouldn’t have any issues. YTTV allows three streams at the same time. I pay $10 more to get 4K support so I have unlimited local network streams plus three external streams.

the only issue is that sometimes YTTV gets confused about the home area checkin. My recommendation is for your brother to do it on his phone. Don’t try to do it on Roku/desktop as they lack a GPS for location verification. It’s very Easy to switch accounts within YTTV for certification so it shouldn’t be a lot of work for your brother

With NFL Sunday Ticket moving to a streaming service next year we are toying with the idea of dropping DirecTV. We have all of the basic streaming services (Hulu, Disney, Peacock, Prime, etc.) We live in a multi-family home with the in-laws in the apartment next door. My original thought is to get the highest FuboTV package and split the cost with the inlaws. We have 2 TVs with one being a Smart TV but the one in the bedroom is not, but I am assuming a Roku stick would solve that issue. The one issue I am trying to figure out is the in-laws are originally from CT and love their SNY and YES and I can't find a service or workaround for them to get YES here in NH. I'm not sure there is one. Then we will likely pick up whatever service gets Sunday Ticket and both save money. Does this make sense? I'm a streaming novice, am I missing anything?

Who do you get internet from and are you in same router/IP

Honestly I’d get comcast if you are and have no privacy issues with each other re: DVR
It’s so much better than Fubo’s

(Don’t know much about SNY and Yes other than knowing it’s on DTV)

Roku is fine
People Here like Amazon fire sticks more

There are going to be bunch of sales on tvs soon too

Thanks, we have Spectrum internet, but we do have separate routers/IP/networks there are no privacy issues I just thought going the Fubo route would be cheaper and work b/c they allow multiple streams, maybe it's not? Are you saying maybe get Comcast/Spectrum and still split the cost and have them log in through the app? Sorry I am not as technically sound as I should be.

Comcast/XFinity's DVR is one of the worst. It randomly deletes recorded shows with no warning based on undisclosed rules (e.g. under some circumstances recordings are deleted after a year even when set to keep indefinitely); their forums are full of threads like https://forums.xfinity.com/conversations/x1/dvr-deleting-recordings/625d94a0ff19c3627da45bf5

Honestly for reliable DVR you really want an actual DVR rather than relying any service provider; none of them offer reliable long-term storage and control over your recorded media.

I’ve only had that issue when I was above 95% but in any case it’s much better than Fubo. But yeah I’m not taking about multi-year holdings

They also have a feature where you can save deleted things (but not sure how long that’s possible) that has been instrumental when I erased by accident.

Only suggesting on single IP and have the installer do it like it’s the same house (multi-rooms) and if it’s Comcast’s/Xfinity

Another bad thing is You have to be on the home network to watch many sports (especially when different events based on geography, like most non-ESPN stuff)

I’ll try to ask my cousin who has Spectrum
