How often is it that a #5 team is a 3 score dog?

Looking forward to Cincy Hogs and Oregon Dawgs, among others

Woo Pig! I don't remember the last time the Hogs opened with a top-25 match-up. So fucking excited for this season and am so thankful for Hunter Yurachek and his hirings of Sam Pittman and Eric Musselman (as well as the athletic and academic excellence everywhere under his watch). Arkansas sports hasn't been this exciting in a long, long time.

Next week is going to be fun when I can interact with the Longhorn fans on here...

Good opening post, AF. My gameplan for Saturday, besides making a pastrami burger and blue Aggie ice cream, since I like to make the local cuisine of my opponent to devour their soul:

Unsure for the noon slot (sell me), but absolutely Oregon/UGA, then Tide mixed with Irish/Buckeyes on alternate monitors also while fantasy drafting.

I should be saying Bc Rutgers but the better game for a neutral is South Dakota State Iowa

Missouri Valley teams do fairly well against B1G opponents, get hyped up to play them. It’s a weird sort of rivalry and those states border, albeit a small one.

Added. I always try to include the New England schools, but this thread is basically just a Texas/Arkansas crowd, so I don't know why I wouldn't always include the Horns.
Don’t forget the Bama fans — you’ve got @Brand Name @Royal Reader and me, at a minimum. Can’t remember if @JMDurron roots for Bama or Auburn. And I think I’m forgetting someone else.

Seriously, though, thanks for getting us started. Your thread-starters are usually how I start thinking about the upcoming week of CFB.

Oregon +17 and Utah -3 are the two bets that jump out at me, but what the hell do I know?

Can’t remember ever seeing as big a gulf between writer opinion and gambler opinion as we’re seeing now with Notre Dame.

Bama fans are just Yankees fans without the math skills, or pedigree.

Does that help?

Now, please excuse me while I wallow in the fact that there’s pretty much nothing to look forward to this season, barring the random number generator that is Auburn football spitting out something unexpected.

Looking forward to Saturday with my usual combination of excitement and dread, whenever ND has one of these big, national games against a top 5 team. An upset would be so big for the program to finally beat one of these heavyweights. But a blowout loss, which is absolutely possible, would really hurt their playoff chances right out of the gate. Strengths of the team should be OL, running back group, and a stud tight end in Mayer. Buchner has all the measurables at QB, big arm, excellent speed and athleticism. But lack of experience, and a not good injury history history are the big question marks. Defense has a legit top flight edge rusher in Foskey, good athleticism in the secondary, despite the loss of Hamilton to the draft, and some new LBs they’re breaking in. I really like Freeman, and think his energy and personality will eventually pay big dividends on the recruiting front. Really interested to see how he has his team prepared for a huge challenge like the Buckeyes.

How is Harsin still the head coach?

Not talking about the on-field results (which weren’t great, but neither was the situation he inherited), but the off-season drama. I haven’t read a ton about it, but from what I have, he’s not building the culture you want.

Between my increasing age and distance from Auburn (moved to OH), I really have zero insight into WTF is happening behind the scenes. I know our AD is negotiating an exit from his job. I assume it’s the usual booster political BS undermining effective functioning of the football program.

My main fear when Gus was fired was that we’d be Tennessee post-Fulmer. Gus wasn’t great, but it wasn’t clear we could do any better, either. Harsin hasn’t given me reason to expect otherwise so far. I’m not sure it’s a given that we can attract anyone better due to the political BS, so Harsin will probably get at least another year or two to see what he can do.

He lost both his coordinators from a year ago, with his DC decamping for Oklahoma State (!!) and taking most of the defensive line with him. And there’s whispers about Harsin being abusive.

One seldom hears about “boosters” having a salutary effect on a football program, but in this case I think they’re pushing the right agenda. Hiring Harsin was a mistake. The sooner the administration admits that and sacks him, the better for Auburn football.

Bama, the Spawn of Satan of the South. My daughter and SiL are Auburn fans, but I still want them to lose except against Bama. Sorry JMDurron.
I'm really looking forward to the game against Cincinnati. Woooo Pig Sooooie!

To be clear, I have no idea whether booster politics is pro-Harsin or anti-Harsin. My angle was more that whatever background dysfunction surrounds them is how we end up with both Harsin and a relatively low probability of doing anything smarter with the next hire. Obviously, a non-toxic variant would be preferable.

EDIT - Given the Kings Landing-esque nature of SEC football programs, it's hard to say whether the rumors of abusiveness are accurate or not. However, it can be said definitively that Harsin even looks like someone I would assume to be a douchebag. Like, it's one of the most punchable faces I have ever seen. He could have blue eyes and be riding an ice dragon, and it wouldn't make him look significantly more disturbing.

This is a great week of matchups, starting tonight with the USC transfer bowl. Pumped for college football to be back in full force!

For some reason I never knew you could be in the end zone and touch the ball in a touchback situation without it becoming a touchback. The more you know!

Ohhhh Pitt. From a BEAUTIFUL pass and catch (and juke!)... to simply dropping the ball

Is Wake Forest supposed to be...good this year? I went to ESPN's scoreboard to check the Penn State score, but they only show the top-25 by default. My surprise when I saw the Wake Forest - VMI score, but had to filter the B10 for the PSU one!

I LOVE this WVU - Pitt game! College football needs to find a way to get us this stuff every year, conferences be damned.

I think that’s a college only rule
NFL and college rules are exactly the opposite. In the NFL, it doesn’t matter where the ball is in relation to the plane, just where the player is who attempts to stop it from entering the end zone.

Under NCAA, the players position doesn’t matter, only whether the ball breaks the plane.

College football is just the best.

Just looked -- WVU and Pitt play the next three seasons, and then after a three season break, have another set of four from 2029-2032. Keep em coming.
