Would not be surprised to see Whitley as one of the two prospects here, as @BigSoxFan floated. I think Bloom has confidence he can fix broken pitchers (then again, the Astros do this very very well).

An upgrade offensively from Maldonado. Not so sure about behind the plate. Houston has put up with Maldonado’s offense for years because the pitchers love him. I wonder how much Vazquez is gonna play.

Remember when Vazquez and Swihart were the Sox 2 best catching prospects in the minors?

Thanks for everything, Christian. You competed your ass off and were better than most realize imo. Tear it up in Houston (just not this week).

Yeah, good luck to him and I hope he signs a nice deal in a few months. Elsewhere. Unless it's team friendly.

One of my "I know this guy isn't an all-timer but he's one of my favorites" type guys. We'll always have those clutch HRs and framing.

Eight seasons behind the plate for the Sox — almost 700 games. Behind the plate for the last out of the 2018 Series. Dependable catcher who could hit.

and there goes one of the 5 best catchers in Red Sox History.

Also, holy shit, how is that even possible?
The Astros are just renting him for the final weeks of the season and his vast experience against the Yankees. If the Sox love Vaz as much as we do, they can get him back again in free agency.

Many years ago I was in a sim league where all the teams were based on the historical rosters of a team. I had the Red Sox, of course, and since Fisk played more for Chicago than us, the Chicago team got him. And....there wasn't much left. That was pre-Varitek so you want to tell me Vazquez is the third or fourth best catcher in team history, I'm going to believe it.

I hope Plawecki doesn't play as much as Vasquez did. Would rather they gave a good look to Wong (not that I think he's going to show very much) or some other young guy.

Dammit, rare is the Sox catcher that can stick for a lot of seasons. And dude looked crushed when he first learned of the trade.

By Fangraphs War:

Fisk 38.3
Varitek 21.6
Gedman 13.7
Vazquez 11.9

Edit just for fun - Jarrod Saltalamacchia is the eight greatest Red Sox catcher by fWAR (8.8)

Seriously though how do you screw this up by letting him take BP and questions from the press like that and have to have your PR team pull him off the field? You had no idea you were trading him today? What a colossal screw up by the front office. It’s embarrassing.

Ronaldo Hernandez is slashing .310/.335/.517 over his last 259 PA in AAA. .340 BAbip. 10bb/45k. Doesn't walk at all but doesn't really strike out. 24 years old. Maybe they like him.

Hit .284/.326/.501 in 2021 over 387 PA.

I wonder if they'll give Ronaldo Hernandez a shot. On 40-man and multiple sites have him as a better prospect than Wong. 1.5 years younger. Better hitter but I assume worse catcher

Presumably because a deal is not done until it's done. You can't tell a guy not to take BP and then say "never mind." Presumably this got out because someone other than the Red Sox leaked it before they could tell Vaz.

Really likable player. Obviously frustrating at times especially as the D fell off over the last few years but had many big hits and was clearly a popular teammate.

id rather have Ronaldo and Wong just catch the rest of the way and move Plawecki too

That's tough to take. Vaz is a brick.

Like he says, it's a business. I'm always going to remember the unbridled joy he showed when recording outs on the basepaths.

Are we going to find out who the two prospects are or are they PTBNLs?

Teams deal with trades all the time. How often do you see a guy on the field and get pulled in the middle of BP? You think a deal came together that quickly? If there was a chance of it being done tonight you don’t send the player out on the field. This could have been handled so much better than this by the front office. And don’t you think the player deserves better? Give Vasquez more respect than that!
And how about respecting the fans better than this? This is Tampa Bay baseball. Our front office should be better than that.
