I enjoyed Kaat's speech and am loving Winfield. I'm not sure if he's done anything like this, but I think he would make a fine narrator for MLB pieces featuring the negro leagues and/or players from the era. I'm also thinking he may be a great interview for a piece on the Yankee teams that he played on.

I knew (embarrassingly) very little of Bud Fowler. This is a great tribute and I cannot wait to read up to learn much more on his amazing career.

Why did so many of the HOF'ers (seated on her side) not shake Jane's hand? It seemed almost everyone shook the guy's hand who were seated on his side.

First 1/3 or so of the song was very good then got a bit screechy in parts. Not a fan of the personal spin put on her rendition.
You could see her take an extra beat right before "and the rockets red glare" line, probably saying "please don't miss this note," then went on to miss the note... and a few more afterward. Moral of the story: when you're rolling, don't stop to think, just keep rolling. She probably hits the notes if she just stays in the zone she was in. You can't blame her for nerves, though, considering.

I told that story to my wife (Kaat looking very dominant as the SP against the Sox in the next to the last game and then having to quit with the sore arm).

What an emotional day this is. There is no one player more important to the history of this franchise than David Ortiz. Him and Tom Brady are my sports heroes and one is going into the Hall today. It just goes to show you how incredibly lucky we were to have those two guys change the course of Boston sports history simultaneously. My Mount Rushmore will have 2 spots until somebody else is worthy enough to join them. Congrats 34. No one deserves it more than you.
I have signed pics of Ortiz, Brady, Orr, and Bird. If I ever save up enough money I'll have them archival-framed as my Mt. Rushmore.

Oh, I have Belichick and Red, too. They'd go on a different cliff face, though.

I always felt it was an injustice that Hodges was good enough to make the cut to play at Ray Kinsella's farm but not for the Hall of Fame. Glad that it's finally been rectified.

So many of the Negro League greats have Buck O'Neil to thank for keeping their stories and legacies alive. Buck O'Neil was an not just an incredible champion for the Negro Leagues, but also an ambassador for the game of baseball and made it his life's work to promote the two as one. I need to find my way to Kansas City.

This is a remarkably talented class of Hall of Famers this year. I've enjoyed this day more than most I can remember, and I've shed many a tear watching and listening. God help me I love this game.

Speaking for myself, I first really learned of Buck ONeil because of his extraordinary presence in Ken Burn's Baseball documentary of some 30 years ago. He was magnificent and today is long overdue.

His niece gave a fantastic speech, but it remains unconscionable that he was not inducted in 2006 when he could have given the speech himself.
