Nesmith will be better with more minutes and a lower-key environment.

The kid just looked stressed with limited minutes
Sure that is possible, but I don't think that it was anything Indy valued in the deal. They wanted Brogdon gone, and they got a #1 in return

Does anyone know why the Pacers were so willing to give Brogdon up for basically nothing and no one else was interested? I know injuries are a factor but is anything else going on behind the scenes with him? Just strange.
among other reasons stated, Brogdon is a long-term injury risk and owed $60 mil too

Gallinari

That's really good. Need random depth pieces but this is really really good.
It's also really nice to be one of those teams where you know what you're going to get with the guys on the roster, and can go forward accordingly. You don't have to tear your hair out wondering what Nesmith's ceiling is anymore, etc.. Even Williams and Pritchard are a known quantity at this point.

They have definitely addressed the playmaking need Stevens identified in some of his post-finals remarks. Well done by him. It’s also liberating after years of hoarding draft assets to see the Celts use them to get some proven commodities. I’ll take this top-10 against anyone’s, and that’s not even taking into account the Jays continued upward trajectory and White getting more comfortable in the system.

Not worried at all about White and Gallinari. They're both role players.

I'm worried about Brogdon/Smart. They're both clear starters.

Maybe whoever doesn't start is psyched and it's a non issue. I think it's unlikely.

Even the hassle of whichever guy does start, the media asking Ime and the players, maybe the other guy should be starting instead?, is a distraction.

I hope you guys are right, because I'm going to be gutted if Smart is traded, but I just don't see it as viable.

And that's before even getting into the money being spent.
Why do we care about how big of a tax payment Wyc will need to make?

Agreed getting rid of a veteran on a 3yr deal to begin playing kids makes complete sense from Indy's perspective. They are in a full rebuild.

Expect Myles Turner to be moved

I'm guessing Nesmith will be in their top 9 rotation. They were playing Lance Stephenson minutes last year, adding young players with upside is the right direction

Unprotected #1s are worth their weight in gold, but as far as future unprotected 1sts go this has to be about the least value possible. It's for 2023, and the Celtics are currently the NBA title favorite. Even if Tatum were to get hurt and miss huge chunks of the year it's likely to be in the 20s.

We don't.

But if the owner cares, kinda have to think about moves accordingly.

I would guess the owner cares at least somewhat about how much money he's spending.

You don't think he just handed Brad a blank check, do you?

Any chance Brad can snag Poetl with that TPE? Focus should be on snagging a big now that we have an extra guard and have lost Theis. Poetl would be a great match who has to be available..

What other move would they have made with the 22M salary slot? They’re over the cap entering FA, so they’re limited to using their exceptions - and they just used the MLE on Gallinari - and trades with matching salaries (or use of the Fournier TPE).

Ainge didn’t leave the team in a shambles or anything, but we had major concerns about what the next steps would be given all the uncertainties. To wit:
  • Kemba dragging down the entire structure of the team both on the court and financially
  • Williams and Smart free agency looming
  • Not much in the way of tradeable fodder.
Stevens immediately improved our flexibility last summer, while improving the roster, added multiple potential ballast contracts both over the summer and in-season, with one (White) being a legit roster player on top of it.

And now just keeping it rolling. What a job he has done. Set up for the short term and are far from hampered in the long-term, with the main limitation at the moment being a dearth of picks to trade but this is a beast roster and still flexible to do more.

Yes, I dare say Ime is a better coach and POBOBS is a better GM. That organizational readjustment worked wonders.

I think Brogdon coming off injury will be fine easing in... Season 2 though...
Given Brogdon’s injury history and the need to keep him bubble wrapped until the playoffs, there’s plenty of time for all their guards. The ability to give them longer rests after the bumps and bruises is an important part of ensuring that those minor injuries don’t turn into bigger ones.

Count me among the too many PGs is a good problem to have crowd. Smart and Brogdon will coexist. There will be games when Horford or TL are out or need rest and both Smart and Brogdon will start in small ball lineups. They’ll both get 25+ min/gm. They both profess to be team-first guys. It’ll work out. And if it doesn’t, PBS can deal with it at the trade deadline.

Love what Stevens has done to round things out, but Ainge drafted:
Tatum
Jaylen
Smart
Timelord
PP
GWill

Bit more than not leaving the team in shambles if you ask me, that's the entire reason we are so good.

If you want to give % credit for the 2021-2022 or the 2022-2023 Celtics roster, it's gotta be 80+% Ainge.

This is the highest class problem you can have with personnel. Somehow I don’t see White, Gallinari, or Brogdon throwing fits because they’re losing minutes to Tatum, Smart, and Brown, but that’s the coach’s job to manage.
Also helps none are necessarily in contract years a la Scary Terry where numbers will be a huge deal this year.

Yeah I didn’t mean to understate it. I’m an Ainge fanboy for the most part. But things felt somewhat dire given the really lackluster ball we had seen as Ainge made his exit.

We also would have a much different perception of Ainge if Hayward’s foot doesn’t fall off. That team was a very legit contender.

My general sense is that Ainge was 100% the right guy to build the foundation but Stevens is the right guy to pull it over the finish line. His moves so far just have a cold, ruthless efficiency to them.

I do wish we’d get to see Stevens’ drafting philosophy sometime but I am OK with this alternative, haha. Begarin coming over and being a legit 3 and D wing would be hilarious.

I spent all morning gleefully texting with my Celtics fan buddies about the Gallinari news with the pipedream of landing Huerter or Kennard on top of that being the “home run” offseason that I was hoping for.

Then POBOBS goes out and hits a grand slam. He is by far my favorite Wellesley resident of all-time at this point. Fucking A, I love this move (and don’t want to see them trade Smart or White).

I'd think someone bigger than that is going out.

Unless the Celtics start smaller, or move Horford, I sadly think Smart is going out.

I don't see either Brogdon or Smart being happy coming off the bench, and they shouldn't be.

They're both too good.
Brogdon's career high for minutes in a season is 1982, done as a rookie, when he mostly came off the bench.
  • 2016-17, age 24: 75 games (91%), 28 starts, 1982 minutes, 26.4 minutes per game
  • 2017-18, age 25: 48 games (59%), 20 starts, 1436 minutes, 29.9 minutes per game
  • 2018-19, age 26: 64 games (78%), 64 starts, 1832 minutes, 28.6 minutes per game
  • 2019-20: age 27: 54 games (74%), 54 starts, 1666 minutes, 30.9 minutes per game
  • 2020-21, age 28: 56 games (78%), 56 starts, 1930 minutes, 34.5 minutes per game
  • 2021-22, age 29: 36 games (44%), 36 starts, 1230 minutes, 33.5 minutes per game
Smart, also not 100% the most durable guy, but certainly more durable than Brogdon. Maybe both will start, but I think the Celtics will bring Brogdon off the bench most games.

Agreed with this. It's ok to have a lot of good players. It makes it a lot easier when guys get dinged up. Give everyone lots of rest, and kick ass in the playoffs.

Let me just echo what everyone else is saying….this trade is a fucking grand slam. My god

Would love it if they were able to trade PP for a big guy and balance out the roster a bit

Poeltl would be just incredible.
He'd be an amazing fit. I'm sure he's gettable, although a 1st feels steep.

At this point, I'm in full In Brad We Trust mode, so just going to enjoy whatever he does next.

Edit: Poeltl for Grant makes some sense for both teams.

Amazing trade. While it's possible this means someone is going out for a big piece I think they can fill in the gaps with role players and go into next season with an outstanding, deep roster.

Indeed. Especially because any backcourt combo of these three guys would play well together (generally not the case with point guards), or even potentially all three of them at the same time.

None.

I'm talking about them moving some salary they have on the roster now.

This is all great, and as a fan, I agree.

Players don't think like fans.

They have egos. It's part of the reason they're NBA players. They all think they're even better than they are.

Again, maybe Brogdon is thrilled to come off the bench. Maybe he actually thinks, oh guys will get hurt, I'll just start then.

I don't think players think that way. Especially not ones in their prime.

FYI, Brogdon did an interview with The Athletic today and he made it sound as if he had a hand in choosing Boston as a destination

Didn't he and Jaylen protest together during summer 2020? I thought there was some connection with them.

edit: ah yup, Brogdon also from Atlanta

“This Boston team is experienced and hungry to win a championship. I’m excited to be apart of the Boston family and compete for that Championship,” new Celtics guard Malcolm Brogdon told @andscape @espn
Celtics Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Al Horford as well as head coach Ime Udoka have all reached out to Brogdon since the trade was agreed to.

Getting Brogdon might also incentivize Brown to stick around, if they really are close, like-minded and friendly like that.

Man, this deal just keeps getting better the more I think about it. I hope Brogdon starts.

Smart can go back to doing what he does best: coming off the bench and scaring the bejeesus out of second units. We can start a first unit that's nothing but excellent shooters. I've been fine with watching Smart be the last man open after a good possession of ball movement, but it'll be much better when you've got Brogdon, Brown, Tatum and Horford out there at the same time. They have all logged multiple seasons around 40% on 3's, and they'll be looking at more open shots than ever.

Not many teams have the defenders to cover Jaylen, Brogdon, and Tatum if they're all on the floor at the same time. Multiple penetrations will yield tons of open shots.

And when the second unit comes in, you're looking at Smart-White-Grant-Gallo and maybe some Pritchard and Hauser. That's two guys who've started for a good chunk of their NBA careers, Grant, who would start in a lot of places, and Gallo, who should thrive in limited minutes. It's mind-boggling how good this roster looks.

I wouldn’t mess with Smart starting and being the lead PG. If this comes out organically because Brogdon is crushing it, then so be it, but I’d start with him on the second unit with White, etc. This team finally figured out its chemistry. Got to maintain that.
