New threads are good especially when they concern local rare tournaments. Practice rounds start tomorrow. No Tiger, but the LIV players are invited and will be here and are here.

The shuttle to the grounds for public merchandise sales this weekend, took people on a tour of South Brookline it seemed, the way there was so roundabout and 3 times longer than the direct way back. Prices were reasonable, at least compared to Celtics gear. Hotel prices are another matter.

First US Open here since 1988. (Also 1963 was held here, and the famous one in 1913).

It is very cool to have this so close to Boston, and the Brookline PD is killing it with the details. Everything close is closed off. So it should be a cluster&uck for those not fans of the sport.

I may try to see Monday or possibly Saturday if prices fall for admission. Plan on parking in not-Brookline and walking 50 minutes each way if I go.

TV Schedule for the week.Full coverage of the tournament but lots of channel changing the first two days.

Park at the Mall at Chestnut Hill? Too far?
Not worth risking towing for this.

BC has lots that aren't that far and you can park at Trip Advisor too with no issues.

Working on finding a map for all official free lots right now, (but I don't plan on using them)

Edit: Scratch that. Looks like many of these lots (official, not the tiny MBTA ones) need parking passes. I was told you can still use the Dexter SOuthfield lot for free but I am not sure I believe that anymore.

All of the close streets are closed (not parking, but driving too) and are for residents only: https://www.brooklinema.gov/2006/US-Open-Championship-2022#faq

Good look at the course, I don't remember a ton from the 99 Ryder Cup or 2013 US Am.
We were talking about this in another thread recently, I think...the routing has actually been changed since those two events, so you wouldn't necessarily remember everything anyway. For one thing, they've removed the 4th hole on the main course (an awkward short par 4) from the composite routing and replaced it with the 12th hole on the main course (a lovely drop-shot par 3). They've also changed the order of things, so that the 14th hole on the main course - which played as #14 at the Ryder Cup - is now going to be #8, and the 9th hole on the Primrose nine (which was #13 at the Ryder Cup) will be #9. Here's the order of all the holes being used (M = main course, P = Primrose nine) and where they were in the Ryder Cup routing:

#1: M1 (#1)
#2: M2 (#2)
#3: M3 (#3)
#4: M5 (#5)
#5: M6 (#6)
#6: M7 (#7)
#7: M8 (#8)
#8: M14 (#14)
#9: P9 (#13)
#10: M11 (#9) - playing this year as a par 4 (a par 5 for the members, and a par 5 in the Ryder Cup)
#11: M12 (DNP)
#12: M13 (#10)
#13: P1 tee to P2 green (#11)
#14: P8 (#12)
#15: M15 (#15)
#16: M16 (#16)
#17: M17 (#17)
#18: M18 (#18)

FWIW, I played for the Harvard golf team, and The Country Club was our home course for practicing and playing rounds - I've probably played the main course 50 or 60 times - so this is a particularly special week coming up for me. That said, I shared that NLU video with three of my former teammates this other day; one of them is now a member at the club, but I and the other two all struggled at times to recognize the video images we were watching. Gil Hanse has done a lot of work on the course over the past couple of years!

That’s a great overview of the changes @Conigliaro's Potential. The routing changes were apparently because there were not any 10th hole starts in the ‘88 Open, so the club now wants both 1 and 10 to start near the clubhouse. As a whole, the championship course now makes a lot more sense from green to tee. For example, golfers used to simply walk the length of championship 11 and completely skip the hole. The new championship 18 also spaces out the par threes and fives a littles better.

Also, that NLU video may vindicate your earlier point. I think championship 5 plays slightly over the 4th green with that auxiliary tee box? Hmm.

I read there are 100 mbta lots that are free for the week, and shuttles from BC, Chestnut Hill, Cleveland Circle, and Forest Hills.
I read the same, but so far I have seen no information on how to take advantage of this offer. Maybe the USGA will email me on the day of my passes?

I’m going Thursday. I look forward to my 16 year old golfing son (he has a 1.8 index) getting to see US open rough. I went to Winged Foot on 2006, and was amazed at the severity of the rough there.

He’s been to the PGA at Baltusrol for majors so far. Lee Westwood gave him a signed ball walking between holes that day, so I’ll always be a fan of his.

I wonder what the crowd reaction will be to the LIV guys this week, namely DJ and Phil. Are the fans on the grounds aware of what's going on, and will there be a bit more hostility towards these guys? My general opinion is that crowds were usualy fairly indifferent towards DJ.

Phil, obviously is/was beloved by fans. Will he be booed/treated differently now?

I'd lump Bryson and Reed in here but they've always been mostly hated so it's not a great comparison.

I have a Thursday tickets and those look like some good early morning tee times. Not sure the plan for parking as that looks like a mess, but early arrival, lunch and then boo Phil on #1 and head home.

Same here! I nearly tripped over it (in it? through it?) while just trying to walk. It was like tentacles grabbing my sneakers. Long, thick and sort of sticky.

I thought he was calm and composed and stood there and took every question in a very no-win situation. Phil is going to do Phil. What else could he have done?
He's a guy who has always had an opinion on everything, and he deferred almost all the questions of substance. He pumped out the LIV propaganda about growing golf to places where it isn't played. He snapped at people asking two part questions several times, for no good reason at all. That is the opposite of Phil doing Phil.

All he said was please don't ask 2 part questions. I didn't see what you saw.

Edit: He said I don't like 2-part questions.

Phil used to love two-part questions and wouldn’t never, ever snap at the media in public. This was not the Phil we’ve known for the past 30-years.

Fair enough. I would call this Phil under duress. He spent 25 minutes as the face of the backlash against the LIV tour. He lost all of his sponsorships, despite other LIV players being there with sponsorships intact. I give him credit for learning from the mistake of his last candid comments: “We know they killed [Washington Post reporter Jamal] Khashoggi and have a horrible record on human rights. They execute people over there for being gay. Knowing all of this, why would I even consider it? Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reshape how the PGA Tour operates.”

Why are you booing Phil?

Phil is awesome and got me to pay attention to the sport

Fair enough. I just see the PGA as being just as bad or worse (for different reasons) as LIV. I don;t get why you'd boo Phil (just as a figurehead/most famous golfer in it?) Boo the Saudis or whatever. I think he's right about it bringing the game to different people. I don't think booing him does anything positive so I don't see why they would boo him.

Basically Phil's done more for golf in the last 25-30 years than anyone not named Tiger, so I don't see why you would boo him. Maybe I'm phrasing it wrong. I'm not being literal in the "I don't see why"

The attention should be on the US Open not on LIV

Would love to hear you expand on the “worse” point.

Pete Rose did a lot for the game of baseball before it came out that he’s a dick. Same with Curt Schilling.

The bolded is such an outlandish false equivalency that it deserves the contempt you are trying to provoke.

My advice would be to either have a good faith conversation or cut the trolling.

I just believe maybe too strongly in athletic free agency. Last thing I’ll say.

I lose this argument I can see

carry on.

Go Celtics (who seem to be the clear winners on this argument based on +/- ) Go Brookline
