Really have gotten into this sport in this past year thanks to “Drive To Survive”.

Anything else I can do besides watch the races? Like, does F1 have a channel?
F1TV sub is pretty good...you get pre and post session stuff. Jalyon Palmer deep dives. Tech talk show. F2/F3 coverage. Radio Rewind, lots of documentary. And last 30+ seasons of select races.

Chainbear is great on YouTube but doesn't post as much as he used to.

No problem, here is the 3rd party app I use on PC (need the active official sub to log in so nothing untoward). Gives you a sense of the content you get.

Nice breakdown there, going above and beyond and I thank you for that!

I have a buddy that’s gotten into F1 the past month or so. Do you know if I’d possibly be able to account share with him? I’ve searched and cannot find a definite answer to that.

Not something I've tried but I typically have 3 streams up. Data, main sky sports feed and a key driver feed depending who is chasing someone.

The prerace comments from the announcers about the dangerous concrete wall are worrisome. Seems like clips from docs where they are examining how somebody died.

The safety car made that a more interesting race.

Albon gets a point in the Williams, again. I'm glad they aren't a boat anchor.

Max and Charles are repeating last year’s Max and Lewis. They’re 1 and 1A. The rest of the field starts at 4 or 5 comparatively.

There was a lot of sloppiness from a lot of drivers. Without the safety car that would have ended with a helluva whimper.

I’m sure every driver on the grid would have said something about the Mercedes strategy today. Lewis just gets caught (or, more accurately, selected for air) broadcasting those messages more often than everyone else combined.

Danny has fallen off a damn cliff. I feel like F1 suffers when his personality isn’t part of the show, but he isn’t justifying any highlights these days. I wish we could have seen him compete with Max directly for another year or two.

I'll never uynderstand that. He seems a confident, overly confident guy, and he ran away from a challenge.

Not sure that’s a completely fair assessment. Red Bull can be rough on their drivers and it was clear Max was preferred. I think he was put in a support role and wanted nothing to do with it.

A little bit late for this, but I have watched the Miami GP and the race seemed somewhat boring. But then, I saw the various highlight packages F1 releases on youtube and it seemed like there was a lot of things happening in the midfield. I think Miami was either 1st or 2nd on overtakes or something like that.

The point is that TV direction matters a great deal in F1. if the director does a good job, then a race might seem interesting; if not, it might seem boring. To be fair, it's a very difficult sport to broadcast, but still.

This looks like it’s going to be an absolutely miserable event. The drivers look determined but resigned to their fate.

I feel like Ricciardo has given up on racing and is concentrating on building his brand. The wine, the modeling, the workout stuff… Very little of his outwardly displayed passion seems to be on or at the track these days and the performances match.

Ferrari is going to have real problems in the Constructor's Championship if Merc does this week in and week out.

I wonder if the Mercedes gains are a little overstated. They clearly undershot their cooling relative to everybody else. Do they look this good with the extra drag everybody else carried?

I still have a tough time totally buying into f1. Sainz, Max, go off the track and just roll by all the guys skiwer5cars, Hamilton damages his car falls to last can spend two laps whining and wanting to quit, then can pass the whole field. Guy like Bottas, Norris drive clean and have zero chance

It isn’t up yet for today, but lap time charts can be instructive in why things go the way they do. Here’s Miami’s.

Lando and Bottas will probably have solid, but not spectacular, pace. Max, Sainz, and Hamilton will likely have significantly faster lap times throughout. Other factors, like pit stops and where in traffic a driver is released are a bit harder to suss out in this data but are contributors. Overall strategy is key. Max passed Russell by giving up on doing it on track, pitting into clean air, and putting in the lap times he was capable of without a moving road block. When Russell came back out he was far behind. That’s the classic undercut.

Charts are out. I screenshotted a few of the drivers you mentioned.

This graph doesn’t tell the whole story by itself, but I think it will answer your question as to why some guys fly back up the order while others stay out. Lando and Valteri were consistently slower than Lewis, Max, and Carlos. That delta adds up over time.

It''s like the car 90%, how can it not? Russel both this year and in 2020 is a prime example. In 2020, he couldn't come close to scoring points with Williams for the whole season, he gets to substitute Hamilton for a race due to COVID and he ends up leading the race only to lose it thanks to a couple of SNAFUs that had nothing to do with him.

That’s always the question. How much is the car, how much is the driver?
Decades of watching the sport leads me to believe that driver skills are important, but matter mostly at the margin. (Unless we’re talking about drivers who buy their way into the sport.) Whereas the difference in cars - even on the same team - is determinative.

Driver ego and experience also plays a part. Specifically, as drivers get long in the tooth, they seem to be much more demanding of a specific setup and much less flexible in terms of accepting a car that doesn’t “feel” the way they like. (Michael Schumacher famously drove a setup that was so unique that it was almost undrivable to others.)

The only drivers I can think of who were so talented that they could elevate their cars beyond their capabilities on a routine basis were Senna and Schumacher. (Maybe Lauda as well.) However, it’s worth remembering that the cars were much less advanced in their era, which allowed driver skills to shine through.

With all of this as background, I believe that a big part of the reason that Hamilton was/is struggling this year is that something with his setup caused his car to “porpoise” on the straights to a much greater extent than Russell’s setup. And from the quotes I saw early on, the Mercedes brain trust was simply baffled by it.

I suspect that Hamilton’s car will improve as the season goes on and he will get back to something close to his usual form.
