And maybe make a adjustment when you see it's not working?
Budenholzer was asked about it in his presser and admitted that they made a choice - let Tatum and Brown beat them or let another Celtics player have easy looks. He acknowledged it didn't work but if people are suggesting that he should have seen Granite having his best scoring night as a pro in game seven of the ECF semis, I simply cannot agree. Grant is clearly a good shooter but it says something that it took this long, and this game for him to score 27 points in an NBA game.

If the Bucks weren’t coming off a title, I’d expect this game to lose Bud his job. The really crazy thing is this was a poor shooting performance from Grant given the quality of shots he got. If he shoots well, with the looks he was getting, he could’ve easily scored 40.
Bud has his title and no one can take that away from him but OTOH, Cs looked like they were going to the rim at will when Lopez wasn't on the floor, and it's not like MIL has a lot of defenders who can recover when they are in rotation (missing Middleton here as well).

Reading this thread, you'd think Grant killed someone's dog.

Dude had a good game. Maybe just give him this one?
Not sure what you are talking about. We're just discussing the fact that GW took basically 18 uncontested (or lightly contested) 3Ps. I've never seen that before; don't you think it's worth discussing?

I'm super glad MIL decided to go with this game plan and I'm super glad GW hit a bunch of them.

People haven't left GW that wide open since the beginning of the season, that's one reason why.

I wonder what the betting line of Grant scoring more points than Giannis in a game 7 was, if there was one.

Grant kept at it, after missing a few early, and must have been green lighted even more from the coaches and players at halftime, because he launched threes awful confidently in the second half.

It’s nice to see hard work pay off.

Lots of guys were getting uncontested looks in the second half. Grant wasn't alone on that.

And, as we all know, the higher the utilization and volume, the lower the conversion %. The dude shot 5x as many 3's tonight as his season average, and he still put it in at a near 40% clip. While playing significant minutes on GA.

People in here are shrugging their shoulders and saying, "Meh. He hit open shots. He should make those."

They're underplaying how great Grant was today.

We are responding to the initial post which was overplaying it.

If he goes 6/18 and the Celtics lose, this board would have a completely different reaction.

Teams were also not as focused on getting the ball out of Tatum and Brown's hands before the playoffs.

This is why individual stat lines and single game +/- are even more useless in these games. Stars often get clamped hard and rotation players can get much easier looks.

Kudos to Granite - he made the Bucks pay for their tough choices.

100% this. The Bucks dared Grant Williams to beat them in a Game 7 and beat them he did. He was nails.

They might have also been hoping that if the C's missed 3s early, they'd start driving into Giannis and Lopez. Didn't happen. And I think Lopez's entire 1st q run killed him.

7/18. And he wouldn't have jacked as many 3s as he did if the game wasn't a blow out.

Six of those 18 shots came after the C's ballooned the lead to 16 points late in the 3rd quarter (on his shot). He went 1-5 from deep on his last 5 shots from that point. The volume was a byproduct of the score, and prior to those garbage time shots, he was almost 50% on 13 3's.

The bolded is generally true because higher utilization normally requires taking tougher shots. There is literally no reason to think that relationship holds when you aren’t being defended. Guys don’t shoot worse on FT when they get fouled more in a game and there’s no reason to think a player’s ability to make uncontested threes declines as he is given more opportunities to shoot them.

This makes no sense. You don't see Grant scoring 27 because no one gives him 18 WIDE OPEN 3 point shots a game. Sure, maybe he only scores 20 if we replay this game tomorrow and Celtics only win by 19 instead.

And before KFP rips my post apart, in no way is this a shot at Grant. It's a shot at the Bucks defensive plan and refusal to adjust.

It makes sense if you are the sort of person who can live with your choices even when they don't work out. I think Budenholzer is a fantastic NBA coach but I get that others do not. That said, I think the sentiment expressed upthread about Bud having the luxury of last year's title will make acceptance of his strategy easier.

Its ok if people think Budenholzer is stupid/stubborn/not quick enough to adjust. Its also ok for others to see it differently.

Tatum’s game 6 was all time but Bud overreacted and left the role players open to stop Tatum. Opposite of Ime’s strategy with Giannis and it was a bad decision.
Rather than blame Bud, I credit the fact that the Celtics have a better, deeper roster. The Celtics have several players who can guard Giannis one-on-one. The Bucks don't have several players who can guard Tatum one-on-one. There's only so much an NBA coach can do with inferior players.

I think both are true. The Celtics were the better team and Bud overreacted.

Much appreciated.
I thought it was pretty funny.
If I wasn’t on my phone, I would have posted that gif from G6 when Giannis took about 7 steps without being called for traveling (aka “walking”).

Regarding Grant, what we should be celebrating is the fact that the guy can clamp on a wide variety of players, including the most unguardable player in the Association. Prior to today, he was already receiving a lot of props for this series. His offense today is obviously the focus but damn his D has been so versatile.

I didn't know Grant was working with @LethalShooter, Chris Matthews, who also helped Bobby Portis go from 36% with the Knicks to 47%in his first year with the Bucks.
Lethalshooter alsoworking with Grayson Allen but no video of those workouts after this game.

Theis is client too.

The Duncd on pod had an interesting point, that the Celtics adjusted to Grant being left alone not by just telling him to keep letting it fly, but by trying to get him those 3s in the rhythm of the offense more. I think Bud's strategy was to get Grant into his head somewhat ("why are they daring me to shoot? Am I actually not a good shooter?"), and the adjustment helped get him back to who he is, while keeping the looks high-quality.

+1
Anyone that says Grant had a bad game because he goes 1-5 or 0-2 from 3 in a game this series isn't paying attention.

That is two series in a row where he has guarded Giannis/Durant, probably better than any other NBA player this season.

I'll go a step further, Grant (and Horford's) ability to guard Giannis on an island is the #1 reason the Bucks shot the 3 so poorly in this series, even with several ~40% 3pt shooters healthy (Grayson, Jrue, Portis, Pat C)

Sorry but he was ass in games 3-6 regardless of the points. Anyone saying otherwise is a fan boy.

Do Tatum and Brown catch a break by not having to go 15 rounds with Giannis?

I guess count me as a fanboy then, I thought his defense was excellent.

The whole team caught a break with no Middleton. Makes Giannis easier to "guard" so much that one can guard him.

You have the nickname Granite Truther though so I guess I shouldn't expect any less. You have to be to defend his games 3-6.

He played like 19 seconds in the 4th quarter game 4 comeback. He had an up and down series. Overall he was a huge factor. But it was up and down.

Dude has good games and bad. He's a bench player. He also does particularly bad on the road. But ok.

Not worth arguing with if you can't even admit he had shit games this series. Seriously?

He was the 5th option on offense I could give a fuck if he goes 0-1 from 3 or scores zero points. Trying to slowdown Giannis was the game plan. Same goes for Horford, was Al shitty? no

Maybe his defensive responsibilities, where he acquitted himself quite well most of the series, had something to do with a couple of bad offensive performances.

But not all of the series. It's almost like he had some bad games and some good games. Crazy, I know.

But lets keep pretending he's a world beater and showed up for all 7 games.

This board is ridiculous when it comes to Grant Williams. Especially when he has a good game. Took like 3 months last season for people to admit he was fat. I don't get it.

Such a lock down defender he didn't even play the 4th quarter in game 4. Great game though.

OK he didn't show up every game and guard Giannis...right let's keep on going back to PPG

too bad we didn't have Kemba this series we could have used him
