to be fair, bb’s drafting over the last several years has been pretty shitty overall

he’s old now and no longer has the best player in football on the roster for relatively low money
He lost that player and made the playoffs last year. Sorry he can’t get to the SB every year.

People are strange
When you're a stranger
Faces look ugly
When you're a gaurd

The board seem wicked
When you're unwanted
Pick seems a reach
When you're a gaurd

It’s not unreasonable to wonder about the pick, and still be grateful for 6 Super Bowls. My God, the all-or-nothing takes some of you have.

i don’t think anyone posting on here doesn’t respect what bb has achieved in new england

the question is whether he is doing a good job GMing this team recently. I think he’s earned som criticism in that dept and his most recent pick isn’t helping

Logan Mankins was largely thought of as a third round talent when the Pats took him in a similar position in 2005 and he ended up one of the best linemen in Pats history.

I think this will end up being a very good pick.
Me too.

The horror! Listen to yourself -I know we’ve been super spoiled but wining the super bowl is fucking hard and we did it 6 flippin’ times since 2001. We need to get better every year and last year we were better than the year before, that’s good with me. All I want is a chance every year and BB gives that to me, I could not be happier to be a Pats fan.

To characterize the negative comments about the pick as simply exhibiting “wonder,” might be putting it mildly.

I feel like this happens somewhat regularly where Bill grabs a guy in round x that general consensus had in x+1, and later he grabs a guy who dropped and we are generally happy. Let’s see how Day 2 goes

Strange will be 24 before he plays his first NFL pre-season game.
I mean... who cares? Not to be a jerk, by why would anyone care? He's a guard, if he's any good he can play into his 30s and be just as effective, you shouldn't count on anything from a pick beyond his 2nd contract anyway

I don’t get why everyone expects BB to change what has always worked for him. Of course he makes mistakes and has since 2000. But why change the process that has been working. Is it bc Mac isn’t Brady? Was Brady BRADY after year one? Idk. Maybe BB knows better than us and hasn’t gone five years without making a SB. Wait??? The year after this we can match that!

These guys’ big boards are largely not reliable indicators of team boards and the perceived range for players among the actual teams, especially when you get out of the very top of the draft. It’s a really tough job when you aren’t working the prospects full-time as part of a team over thousands of hours, I don’t envy these former scouts/personnel guys their tasks.

Ok, but who cares? People can have their opinion, and no one will know how good or bad this pick really is for a few years.

5 picks tomorrow
That’s fair but their recent draft history of defensive players outside top 40 really sucks.

Perkins
McGrone
Bledsoe
Uche
Jennings
Joejuan
Winovich
Cowart
Dawson
Bentley (hit, but limited)
Sam
Rivers
Wise (hit, but limited)
Cyrus
Valentine
Grugier-Hill (hit, but for another team)
Roberts (hit, but very limited)
Richards
Grissom
Flowers (big hit)

It’s been almost a decade since they left a draft with multiple defensive hits outside the top 40 picks (‘13 the Collins/Ryan/Harmon year).

This is fair…I think for me a big part of my frustration is tied to that bills playoff game. We got fucking curb stomped and it was painfully obvious we need far more speed and athleticism on D. Those guys with the elite physical traits tend to be harder to get later

for instance, if we’d taken daxton hill, I’m thinking, “nice - we just got a former 5 star who runs a 4.34 40 to help it secondary…and we might still get an awesome o lineman later.” It’s much harder to envision us getting a stud athlete with speed to help the D later in the draft than it is to envision us getting a good lineman later

If he's a starting guard it was a good pick. They were were picking at #29.
Bingo. They were not getting a sure fire, high impact player at 29, or likely not at 21 for that matter. I’m somewhat surprised they didn’t grab a LB or a DB. But a solid starter, at any position, would be a big win. I get being pissed about staying up late, and not getting the entertainment value of hearing some draft “guru’s” best player available called. But they have a shit ton of picks tomorrow, hopefully they can add another starter, and some depth.

where I was last at
IIRC this draft was supposed to be strong in middle rounds. if BB, picking up an extra 3rd and 4th can snag guys who can fill holes maybe the trade was worth it. But it irked me to see Buff and KC both pick ahead of the Pats and both presumably getting stronger while we won the all important matrix point trade.

Is it? They had a lot of good starting guards picked lower than that in the last decade. It's one of the reasons I dislike the pick: Bill has been awesome at finding those guys late.
Seems strange to trust Bill to find guards late while also not trusting him to grade guards appropriately when he drafts one early.

Seemed like we traded a first for 2 3rds and 4th.

It would be interesting to see what Bill would do with a top 5 draft picking year where he could get a surefire player and also have a high second for a reach. We are always picking late. It distorts things.

Huh? I trust him to grade this guy appropriately. But a good guard taken in the 4th round and later is value, a good guard taken in the 1st isn't, in my view. Would you have been happy with a first round pick who ended up having Stephen Neal's career? I sure wouldn't. If he's Mankins it's a good pick.

I’ve been finding it tough not to overreact to the Buff game. And with a lot of the top echelon D guys available (particularly at 21 but also at 29), it’s hard to see the strategy. That said there are still some freak athletes out there. They just aren’t quite as polished.

The most amusing takes are the “They could have gotten him X picks later,” as if that concept hadn’t occurred to a guy who’s been doing this forever.

Feeling the pick addressed the wrong need or just disliking the player, I get.

There is a literally another nfl team saying they scouted him bc they thought he might be there at 104. It’s super douchey, yes, but it’s still a data point

Again, I get wanting to address other, perhaps larger, areas of need. I certainly don’t love the pick- or rather, I’m not excited by it. But I simply don’t believe that Bill just drafted a guy he could have gotten 70 picks later. Or even with his next pick. Far more likely McVay is a douche for thinking he might be there at 104 (in addition to being a douche for other reasons).

I know it’s been a whole year since the guy stood pat and got the top rookie QB at 15, but I suspect BB still had some idea what he’s doing, outcome of the Bills game notwithstanding.

I think most are pissed we picked a guard when BB seems to consistently find those guys later, or even as UDFAs, at better “value”. And we all don’t want to see the D steamrolled by good teams again.

That is... 1 team out of 30, it;s also a team that has been really bad at drafting: https://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/ram/draft.htm

I trust Bill's judgement of players, draft history, and feel for the league a lot more than a flippant remark from a coach whose team traded all their picks in part because they suck at using them.

Might be a good sign they don’t have a finger on the pulse of the first third of the draft seeing as they’re coming off a title and don’t have a pick until 104. Plus they’re clearly feeling themselves at that swanky draft party.

*Note, SMU only had six players rated 5: Hutchinson (#2 to DET), Jordan Davis (#13 to PHI, Travon Walker (#1 to JAC), Zion Johnson (#17 to LAC), Jones, and Chenal.

Any of the bolded, especially on the defensive side of the ball would be great. Jones or Chenal would be fantastic.

Edit: Fixed. Thanks, @Cellar-Door!

I absolutely get the D thing. I remember the Bills game as well as a recent Super Bowl.

But getting upset over a guy with a perceived ability to identify quality offensive lineman for spending a premium pick on an offensive lineman seems counter intuitive.

Maybe, but I would look at it as... we got a really great athlete on the line, and there are going to be plenty of athletes on D available in the 2nd, 3rd, probably 4th rounds.

Off the top of my head... McCollum, Anderson, Chenal, Smith, Mafe, Castro-Fields, Clark, Woolen, Tindall, etc. All those guys and more grade out well ahead of Hill as athletes by RAS.

If anything Strange is the freakiest of freak athletes, 12th best RAS score in the class overall, 3rd among OL
