Yeah, that's very unexpected. Seems like it might've taken the idea of the Jays getting a competitive edge for some of them to get the shot, but hey, I'll take it.

Yeah, but now Heyman has posted a more factual update.

Good for them, really. It's nice to see more players doing the right thing, whatever their motivations. This could give the Yankees a competitive leg up on teams like the Red Sox who will be playing 10 games in Toronto without their full team due to self-inflicted wounds. In what is likely to be a fairly tight race for the division and wild card spots, it's plausible that this could make the difference. Kudos to guys like Rizzo and Judge who I didn't think were getting vaccinated. At least being there for their team was enough reason for them to get vaccinated which is more than we can say about some Sox players.

It could be that, or it could be that Judge is a FA this winter and Rizzo can be if he wants (he signed for 2 years but can opt out after 1). I'm guessing more the latter than the former, but either way, very happy they can play those TOR games.

I'd be fine with that too if I were you. I wouldn't care what their personal reason is as long as it led to the right place.

There are only six days left until rosters go from 28 to 26 (unless they decide to change that again), the NY bullpen is very well rested with a day off tomorrow. Marinaccio threw 29 pitches in a wild mopup 9th today, and he was already a lock to go down in six days, so I expect NY to replace him by Tuesday and then that guy could go down on May 1. It almost certainly needs to be someone on the 40 man already, my guess is the red-hot Miguel Andujar, 7-13 this weekend in AAA. Bring him up, give him 2-3 games in LF, good games build genuine trade value and bad games at least he will know back in AAA that they gave him a bit of a chance and so maybe another could come if he performs.

That’s my advice, Brian, I accept PayPal.

So what's the read on King longterm?

Dominant bullpen arm or future starter? And if a starter, when?

Is he the first guy that gets a crack at the rotation when someone goes down? Or is he more valuable in his current role at least for this season?

I think we had a similar discussion about Loasiga last season, but I could be wrong about that.

I think Loaisiga has been pretty locked in as a reliever for a few years.

As for King, good question, Schmidt is currently in a similar place. My guess is that they send Schmidt down when rosters go to 26 and let him stretch out, and then he or King get the first chance to fill in on the rotation when needed.

But guys will get chances, a question of how they step up. Nestor Cortes probably wasn't in the top 10 on NY's SP depth chart at this time last year, and now look at him.

Rumor that Aaron Hicks had a kid, so could be a paternity leave replacement, or like I said, they are not going to use Marinaccio much before sending him down next weekend anyway, but the corresponding move hasn't been announced, not sure NY wanted the Andujar one out yet but Hector Gomez posted it.

"As for the catching, their framing, receiving, blocking and throwing is at least partly responsible for Yankees owning an AL-low 2.53 ERA.

Just look at the stats: The Higashioka-Trevino combo is among the best in the league for fewest passed balls (2, T-1st), wild pitches allowed (3, T-1st) and stolen bases allowed (3, 2nd) as well as best caught stealing percentage (40%, 4th)."

The move is for Hicks being on the paternity leave.

Rizzo signed for 2/32 including the ability to opt out after this year, I wonder if NY would consider offering him 1-2 additional years (so a total of 3/48 through 2024 or 4/64 through 2025) in exchange for him losing the player option. NY already may have to figure out how to replace both Judge and Gallo this winter, so locking up Rizzo might make sense for both sides.

Looking at our schedule and refreshing myself on it, it's much more balanced than in previous years. Yes, there are a few two week stretches where it's like a gauntlet but most months are a good mix of AL East and others. May is no exception, Toronto and White Sox but cooled off in between.

Two stretches coming up, the 1st started tonight:

3 LAA
3 DET
3 @ MIN
3 CHC

Then:

3 TB
3 @ TOR
3 @ TB
4 HOU

We’ll have a much better idea where NY stands after that, that will be 73 games in.

Yeah, it's brutal. He had a great game in game one of this series (the 9-1 game), a couple of hits, a walk, scoring from first on a double, a nice catch to start the game, a cannon throw from the corner to hold a runner at first, but even when he is patient and gets guys to bring the high fastball down into the top of the zone, he still can't hit it.

Next up, the Tigers come to town for a (literally) hard to watch 3 game weekend series, Apple TV on Friday, YES on Saturday and Peacock at 11:30 AM on Sunday. It takes NY two hours to wake up for their 1 PM Sunday starts, so I am not optimistic about that one.

This was DET's rotation to start the season two months ago:

  1. Eduardo Rodriguez
  2. Tarik Skubal
  3. Casey Mize
  4. Michael Pineda
  5. Matt Manning
All of those guys except Skubal are currently on the IL, as is Tyler Alexander. Skubal has been awesome but NY misses him and Faedo, DET has Elvin Rodriguez, Beau Brieske and Rony Garcia scheduled, who I believe would be around 9/10/11 on their SP depth chart if everyone was healthy, somewhere around there anyway.

First stretch just ended, NY went an amazing 11-1. Now comes the real test.

On pace to win 119 games. Imagine how many it could be were it not for Boone. And to think, many of you thought they had a bad off-season! Ughhhhh

This will probably be hard to confirm for a long time, but I really believe that Cashman told him they would bring him back if he agreed to have a lot of the in-game decision making taken out of his hands. What he is really good at is being the public face of the Yankees, and basically never loses his cool in post-game press conferences, no matter how inane the question (I know I for one could not do this, heh). He also pretty much understands everything that is going on and seems to be in the room at a lot of levels of decision making, he talked today about how they had been eyeing Carpenter since the spring for instance and that the timing was good with Stanton/Donaldson being out when he opted out of his TEX AAA deal, but that they would have probably signed him anyway.

But for pitching moves, for instance, NY hired an additional (3rd) pitching coach last winter and I believe that person and Matt Blake essentially make pitching moves now, maybe Boone has occasional veto power if he really feels strongly but even that I kind of doubt.

Actually thinking about it more now, my guess as to what Cashman proposed and Boone accepted is that the pitching coaches would now completely cover pitching changes, and that would allow Boone to focus much more on the handful of potential lineup moves he can make each game, and unsurprisingly he has seemed to be doing great with those. For instance, if it was his call to hold Trevino until the 13th on Friday and then pinch-hit him when he did, hats off.

Also the Yankees are just rolling, neither Carpenter nor Higashioka were in the original lineup today, but Gleyber felt sick to his stomach and Trevino had some back tightness, so Carpenter/Higgy were added shortly before first pitch, and then hit 4 HRs between them (3 plus one off Schwindel), a combined 6-9 with 9 RBIs and 6 runs scored. So who gets the credit for making out that lineup card? :)

Also after listening to Carlos Beltran call Yankee games for a little while now, I am way more confused about what makes a good manager in today's game. I am ready to concede that one to @EvilEmpire , though, I am decidedly off that bandwagon.

Feels like they can do nothing wrong at this point, enjoy it while you can. Carpenter doing his best Kevin Maas impression.

Yeah, what makes me feel better is that they have been doing it since last deadline, 82-38 now since trading for Rizzo. Teams are going to come at them hard the next two weeks though:

3 TB
3 @ TOR
3 @ TB
4 HOU

As I said above, we will know a lot more after that, that will be 73 games in.

Since you bring him up, another Boone thing from today's postgame press conference:

Carpenter has a ridiculous 6 HRs in just 23 ABs, a 1.592 OPS. When Boone was talking about him today, he made a real point to mention that he has barely missed an additional three more, long fly balls that easily could have gone. He looks like he has solved hitting right now, he had some stretches like that for STL too, admittedly not recently. Two of the six HRs are even against lefties, hopefully today gets him in the lineup more.

NY have unbelievably allowed just one unearned run total in the last 45 games, and that was not because of an error, it was an extra innings ghost runner run.

ESPN has an article up about the Yankees, mostly about Judge's arbitration hearing coming up, but it also had this tidbit that I enjoyed reading:

Asked whether he believed he had lost his role to Holmes, Chapman said that was not his focus.
"I don't see it that way. I'm past that point in my career in which I would fight for a role, for the closer role, I've already gone through that," Chapman said. "When I got to the major leagues, they gave me the opportunity to close and I took advantage it. Pretty much the same thing is happening to [Holmes]. I am trying to come back, healthy, [to] help the team in any role. He is doing an excellent job right now and he deserves the role that he has."

All: what is up with Stanton? His advanced metrics (barrel %, WOBA, xBA) indicate that he should have better production than he's shown. Nursing an injury? Or just random bad luck?
